INDO-BRITISH TIES IN ENERGY SECTOR FROM 1990-2022

India and Britain are bound by strong ties of history and culture, since past decades there
have been various multi-faceted bilateral relationship with UK in the energy sector. India’s
relationship with the UK intensified with its upgradation to a strategic partnership in 2004.

20TH SEPTEMBER, 2004 INDIA AND UK JOINT DECLARATION – In this declaration


both the countries agreed to expand co-operation in the field of civilian nuclear activities, to
identify new areas in the fields such as clean energy technologies and deal jointly on broader
issues of sustainable energy securities.

INDIA AND UK ANNUAL SUMMIT, 2008 - In this summit both the sides acknowledged
the potential for greater collaboration in energy.

Civil Nuclear Cooperation-Both the sides strongly emphasised the potential of a civil nuclear
energy to be a safe, sustainable and the non- polluting, source of energy, which could make a
significant contribution to meeting the global challenge of energy security, sustainable
development. Both countries recognized the importance of Research and Development
collaboration on low carbon energy technologies and welcomed the broadening dialogue
between the two countries on clean coal technologies.

Civil Nuclear Cooperation Declaration, 2010- Both the countries agreed on promotion and
facilitation of cooperation in the nuclear trade and also between and also between the
scientific institutions of the two countries.

United Kingdom- India Summit 2015 – India and UK addressed on the climate change,
promoting secure, affordable and sustainable supplies of energy are shared strategic priorities
for both the countries.

Joint Statement on Energy and Climate Change 2015 - In this summit UK made the
commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050 and India’s
commitment to reduce its emissions by 35% in 2030 and put in place 40% cumulative electric
power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030. Both the
countries signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen energy the two
countries and promoting future collaboration in areas such as electricity market reform,
energy efficiency, offshore wind, solar power, smart grids, energy storage and off-grid
renewable energy services.

India-UK Energy for Growth Dialogue, 2017 – In this dialogue both sides agreed on
further collaboration in the power and renewable energy areas under the Memorandum of
Understanding on Cooperation in the Energy Sector. The agreed areas include innovation in
smart technology to improve performance and loss in India’s power sector, deployment of
renewable energy and support to states in renewable energy planning and deployment.

14th Meeting of the India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee 2020 - In this
meeting both the countries looked ahead to COP26, for collaboration on climate action and
green recovery. The UK is the global leader in the energy transition and India’s energy
efficiency programs, particularly on LED bulbs, have been recognised to have global impact.

There collaboration between Indian Railways and the UK’s department for international
development to support Indian Railway’s objectives of energy security, consumption
efficiency and greening of energy supply. Both the countries look forward in cooperation in
catalysing private sector flows into green projects and strengthening energy security.

3rd India - UK Energy for Growth Partnership- Ministerial Energy Dialogue, 2021-
Energy transition was a major area of discussion in the dialogue. Both sides deliberated and
agreed on a forward action plan and clean transport, renewables, green finance and clean
energy research part of the roadmap 2030, covering a range of topics including smart grids,
energy storage, green hydrogen, charging infrastructure and mobilizing investments in
renewable energy.
The dialogue concluded with both sides underlining the importance of international
cooperation in securing affordable and sustainable energy for the world while setting in
motion concrete action plans for driving the clean energy transition in Power Sector.
