Year 3 Science

Plants
I can explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle
of flowering plants, including pollination.

The Flower
Today, we are going to focus on the flower of a plant.

What is the flower?

What does it do?
Why do plants have
them?

The flower
The flower’s main job is to create new seeds to grow new plants. There are lots
of different parts of the flower.

Pollination.
Pollination is when pollen from the anther is trans-
ferred to the stigma. This can happen in different ways.

Wind – the wind can blow pollen from one plant to an-
other.

Pollinators – insects such as bees, butterflies and flies

are attracted to the brightly coloured petals. They land
on a flower to drink nectar. When they land, grains of
pollen stick to them. Then, when they go to the next
flower, the pollen is transferred.

Once the pollen is transferred to the stigma, it travels

down the style to the ovary. This is where the seed
grows.

Class Activity
In groups, we are going to model pollination. Your teacher will tell you which part of
the flower you are.

Some of you will be the petals, attracting the pollinators.

Some of you will be the anther, holding tennis balls as grains of pollen.

Some of you will be the stigma, waiting for the pollen.

Some of you will be the pollinator, collecting pollen from the anther and transfer-
ring it to the stigma.

When your teacher tells you to, the pollinators will start pollinating the other
plants.
(This may be best done in a large space such as a hall or playground!)

DIFFICULTY:

Throughout our topic, we will be recording what we Label the different parts of the flower.

have found out about plants. Then when we have

finished our topic, we will put all our work into a
booklet and Y6 will be able to use them to revise
for their SATs tests.

Match the part of the flower to its function.

The fifth page of the booklet will be an explanation Petal Contains the pollen.

of the flower and why it is important.

Anther Brightly coloured to attract insects.

Stigma Hold up the anther.

Style Holds up the stigma. Pollen travels

down in to the ovary.
Ovary
Catches the pollen.
Sepal
Where the seeds are produced.
Filament
Protect the flower while it is developing.
