INTRODUCTION

You can see different types of plants everywhere. They differ in size,
shape, color, smell, and even in their mode of production.

Like animals, plants need to continuously reproduce themselves. Some

reproduce through their seeds while some utilize other means. In this module,
you will learn more about the parts that are responsible in plant reproduction.

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING

COMPETENCY

Describe the reproductive parts of plants and their functions (S5Q2W4)

YOUR LEARNING TARGETS

Hi! I am Teacher Flora! I’m going to guide you in

your journey to this learner’s material.

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

• identify and describe the reproductive parts of plants;

• explain the functions of each reproductive part of plants;
and
• cite the importance of reproduction in plants.

YOUR PRETEST

Let us see how well you know the reproductive

parts of plants.

Activity: Parts and Functions of the Reproductive Parts of Plants

What to do:

1. Identify the reproductive parts of plants and their functions. First,

study the diagram below.
Stigma

Anther
Stamen
Filament Style
Pistil/
Carpel
Petal

Sepal Ovary

Now that you are familiar with the basic parts, let’s take
a closer look at them! Did you know that they perform
different jobs?

STAMEN - the male part of a flower. It

consists of the filament and the anther.
The filament holds the anther in a
position tall enough to release the pollen.
The anther consists of two lobes that
contain pollen sacs. Pollen sacs have
pollen grains that are released by the
anther when they mature.

SEPALS - modified leaves which enclose

and protect the other parts of a flower
when it is still a bud. When the flower
blooms, the sepal supports the bottom of
the flower. A group of sepals is called
calyx.

PETALS- the most obvious part of a

flower. Most petals are brightly colored to
attract insects for pollination. A group of
petals is called corolla.

PISTIL - the female part of a flower. It

consists of the stigma, style, and ovary.
The style is a stalk that connects the
stigma to the ovary. It is tall enough to
trap pollen grains. The stigma is a
swollen structure at the end of the style.
It receives the pollen grains. The mature
stigma secretes a fluid that stimulates
the pollen grains to germinate.

I hope you learned a thing or two! Test your wits by

performing the succeeding tasks.

2. Look for and encircle the words in the puzzle listed below. Words may
be downward, upward, backward, forward, or horizontal.

3. Given the diagram below, label the parts of the flower using the words
you found in the word search.

4. With the following diagram, color the MALE reproductive parts of the
flower with BLUE and the FEMALE reproductive parts with RED.

C. Explain

What are the different reproductive parts of a flower? How do these parts
function? Explain.

D. Elaborate

I bet you’re wondering how these parts work

together and how they are significant to our
environment, huh.

Keep these in mind:

1. Male part of a flower is called the stamens, each made up of a

slender filament holding an anther at the tip. At the right time, the
anther releases pollen grains which are equivalent to animal male sperm.

2. Female parts of a flower are called the pistil, each made up of

an ovary with ovules and a stalk-like style with a sticky stigma on top.
A flower with both stamens and pistil is called a perfect flower.

3. However, many plants have flowers that are imperfect, that is, only male
or only female. Sometimes both types of imperfect flowers occur on the
same plant. Monoecious plants have both male and female flowers on
the same plant. Dioecious plants have only one sex of flower per plant.
Both monoecious and dioecious plants generally require cross-
pollination.

4. When a pollen grain lands on a receptive stigma, it forms a pollen

tube down the style to the ovary. Male genetic material passes down the
pollen tube and fertilizes an ovule. Ovules become seeds and the
surrounding ovary develops into the fruit.

5. Reproduction is important for the survival of all living things. Without a

mechanism, life would end. Plants play an important role in the
ecosystem. All organisms will not survive and will die without the food
that plants produce.

E. Evaluate

Directions: Complete the paragraph below by filling out the blanks. Choose your
answers from the words inside the box.
Stamen Reproduction
Flower Stigma
Pistil Ovary
Pollen Anther
Carpels Filament

The parts of the plants play an important role in _____________. The

reproductive part of a plant is the __________, which has two main parts, the
_________ and the __________. The stamen contains the __________ and the
___________, while the pistil or __________ holds the __________, style, and
__________.

YOUR VOCABULARY LIST

The following terms used in this module are defined

as follows.
.
