Grade 4 Music Snapshot: February 2022

This term Grade 4 students and I have been working on establishing routines
in the classroom and building teamwork. Students come to music twice a
week for 30 minutes per class and participate in a musical workout that
includes vocal exploration, echo singing, pitch matching, simple songs,
improvising singing (Arioso), beat keeping, creative movement, singing games,
and listening to stories told through music. Students are learning to
recognise, by ear, rhythm patterns that use quarter notes and paired eighth
notes. In November, students began rehearsing songs for our virtual
Christmas concert.

We have three primary goals in our music classes.

• Be Tuneful – sing or play in tune both alone and with others
• Be Beat-ful – keep a steady beat while singing, playing and moving
• Be Artful – be expressive while singing, playing, and moving

We refer often to our “Pyramid of Musical Greatness”:

In March, we will continue our musical workouts with a focus on matching

pitches when singing, improvising melodies while singing, playing handheld
percussion instruments and Orff instruments while keeping a steady beat,
moving safely to music, reading and writing music notation, and listening as a
good audience member.
