IMPROVE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY USING DUAL SUBTITLES

Abstract

The present article aims at discussing the Netflix streaming service as its benefits
to improve students’ vocabulary learning particularly the use of dual subtitles. L2
research has studied the use of dual subtitles (simultaneous L1 subtitles and L2
captions). However, more discussions are needed to gain more proper
understanding. The improvement of EFL and ESL around the world has shown
by Netflix as one of the streaming services over the last decade. As we know,
many EFL students have many problems in vocabulary learning. Netflix has
helped students to improve their vocabulary with the use of dual subtitles.

INTRODUCTION

Netflix has become the popular platform of streaming service around the
world including Indonesia. Statista.com reported that in 2021, the number of paid
Netflix subscribers in the U.S. and Canada surpassed 74 million, and almost two in
three U.S. based adults had a current Netflix subscription.

Vocabulary learning has become the core material in ELT. There are many
ways to improve students’ Vocabulary. Berne & Blachowicz, 2008 stated that Interest
in vocabulary research and instruction has ebbed and flowed over the decades in the
United States. But in this digital era, the research in vocabulary learning has become
popular again.
 Netflix gives an opportunity for English learners to study vocabulary in fun
way and interestingly. Therefore, a Chrome extension provides the tool to display the
dual subtitles. The use of dual subtitles has helpt English learners to study vocabulary.
In this present article, we will bring Netflix with the use of dual subtitles to English
student in the classroom.
