Exercise 1.1 — Installing VMware WorkstationPlayer

Exercise Summary
In this exercise, we'll install VMware Workstation Player that will act as our hypervisor to build up our lab environment.
‘Simply put, a hypervisoris a platform which creates andrunsvirtual machines. VMware Workstation Playeris free for
non-commercial, personal and homeusewhich perfectly suits our purpose as a personallab environment.
Exercise Prerequisites
Beforeyoustart this lab exercise make sure you havethefollowing:
+ Theinstallation file for VMware Workstation Player. The version we'll usein this exercise is v12.5.
* Amachine which meets the system requirementsdetailed earlier running either Windows or Linux.

4. Run theinstallation file VMware Workstation Player. This will start the installation wizard. Click Next to
proceedto the next page.

4. Onthe User Experience Settings page you will have the options to chooseif the program should automatically
ookforupdates each startup and send anonymous system data andstatistical information to VMware. These
settings are completely optional and will notaffect the lab. You may choose on how you wouldlke to proceed.

Exercise Summary
In this exercise we'll proceed with importing the virtual machines necessary for the lab environment. Thevirtual
machines arein an *.ova format which means that you can simply import them and with very litle adjustments have a
functioninglab environment.
Exercise Prerequisites
Before youstart this lab exercise make sure you havethe following:
+ Successfully installed VMware Workstation Player
Obtaining a BIG-IP VETrial Evaluation Key
At the timeofwriting, F5 offers a 90-dayfree trial edition of the BIG-IP VE. Toaccessthistrial edition, you will have to
create an FS account, Thisis free of charge and anyone can register for an account,
1. To get started with the BIG-IP VE Free Trial, go to the following web page:

2. On our website we make sure that all links are working and are up to date. Therefore,if the previouslink does

assigned to your account is correct as the Base Registration Keywill be sentto this address,

require a specific version for our lab exercises.
Downloading the BIG-IP VE Virtual Machine
For ourlab exercises we require you to run version/build 12.1.2. 249,
1. To download your BIG-IP VE virtual machine,visit https:/idownloads.{5.com,
2. Click on Find a Download.
3. Choose the Product Line BIG-IP v12.x// VirtualEdition,
4. Inthe drop-down menu choose 12.1.2.
5. Click on Virtual-Edition.
6. If necessary, accept the Software Terms andConditions.
7. Click on BIGIP-12.1.2.0.0.249.ALL-scsi.ova.
8 Select the download mirror appropriate for yourlocation.
9. When clicking on one ofthe links a download pop-up will appear.

3. Save the virtual machine imageat a convenientlocation. we'll be using this laterin this exercise.

Exercise Summary
In this exercise, we'll continue to set up our lab environment. You should now havealll three machinesimportedinto
VMware Workstation Player. Next, we needto configure the networkinterfaces on each machinesothatthey reside on
the correct network. In our lab we'll use what is known as a LAN Segment. A LAN Segment is a private network that
can be shared with other virtual machines.

6. Click on LAN Segments. This will launch a separate window where you can create LAN Segments.
