Abstract
The design and fabrication of paper cutting machine using Geneva mechanism is very useful
to cut papers in equal and accurate dimension. Geneva drive is an indexing mechanism that
converts continuous motion into intermittent motion. Due to intermittent motion, the paper
is moved between the time intervals of cutting periods.
The main aim of this project is to study Geneva mechanism and apply same to design paper
cutting machine in compact size with less cost. This will help to cut paper in accurate and
equal dimension. It prove to be low cost solution in production.
Introduction

Now a days, there is lot of competition in the market. So there is need of developing a
new method or process for effective manufacturing. That process or methods should fulfil the
requirement about accuracy Productivity. This paper represents the automatic paper cutting
machine by using Geneva mechanism. This equipment is very accurate to cut the papers. This
concept will be mainly used in the paper manufacturing industry to cut the papers in huge
numbers. The equipment is fabricated in less cost and good efficient.
The aim of this concept is to reduce the human fatigue and time savings in industries
by eliminating the paper marking time. Here it has analysed to use Geneva Mechanism. This
is the mechanism used to get intermittent motions. This mechanism consists of the following
parts like Geneva wheel, rotating disc, bearing, frame and DC motor. In industries the paper
cutting machines go through a time taking process of paper marking which is required to cut
the paper of required dimensions, so this model is designed by using Geneva mechanism
which eliminates the paper marking time and feeds the paper of equal length in each rotation.
Geneva mechanism is used as a mechanism for transforming rotary motion into intermittent
motion.

1.5 ABSTRACT

The design and fabrication of paper cutting machine using Geneva mechanism is very
useful to cut papers in equal and accurate dimension. Geneva drive is an indexing
mechanism that converts continuous motion into intermittent motion. Due to
intermittent motion, the paper is moved between the time intervals of cutting periods.

INTRODUCTION
2.1 PROJECT IDEA
For making this project actual idea or concept was struck to my mind when we were
working in a company named ‘BOX OF SCIENCE’ as an intern. Box of Science is a
company which makes Science Kits. So many times there was the condition for requirements
of paper of different sizes for making the kits. There were many square or rectangular paper
pieces required.
In a company, a separate worker is required to cut this papers properly. But due to
fatigue of workers paper is not always cut with accuracy. So as per we are studying
Mechanical Engineering we concluded that this work will be done by machine rather than
workers. So that the time is saved and accuracy is maintained. Hence, we decided to make
this project for our last year.
We started our project from then onwards. We searched on Google, Read some
Magazines and some News Papers.

2.2 LITERATURE SURVEY

The design and analysis of paper cutting machine based on Geneva was analysed,
they presented a comparison of the position, velocity, acceleration, and jerk between the
classical Geneva wheel mechanism and the proposed mechanism. This analysis presents a
kinematic study of a mechanism incorporating a Geneva wheel to achieve intermittent motion
and was declared as a designated analysis and succeeded largely due to its positive economic
factors. The design and fabrication of paper cutting machine using Geneva mechanism is
useful to cut papers in equal and accurate dimension.
The analysis and synthesis of Geneva mechanism with elliptical crank has been
studied, it has been analysed that for both internal and external Geneva mechanism, the
kinematics coefficient of the Geneva mechanism is a constant if the groove number of the
Geneva wheel is a constant. The elliptic crank using as the drive crank of the Geneva wheel is
equal to the mechanism which has a variable length and a variable speed along the elliptical
moving crank. Therefore the kinematics coefficient of the Geneva mechanism can be
changed.
The analysis and modelling of Geneva mechanism was studied, the paper presents
some aspects theoretical and practical based on the finite element analysis and modelling of
Geneva mechanism with six slots, using the AUTOCAD graphic program. This type of
mechanism is an example of intermittent gearing that translates a continuous rotation into an
intermittent rotary motion. It consists of alternate periods of motion and rest without
reversing direction. Also it gives some design parameters with specify a Geneva mechanism
will be defined precisely such as number of driving cranks, number of slots, wheel diameter,
pin diameter, etc. Finite element analysis (FEA) can be used for creating a finite element
model (pre-processing). The paper focus on the modelling and finite element analysis of
Geneva mechanism with six slots. This technique has the ability to change the shape of
Geneva mechanism with changing any kinematic properties.

PROJECT PLAN

3.1 PROJECT ESTIMATES:

Fig 5.1 Process Model

3.1.1 Reconciled Estimates

3.1.1.1 Cost Estimates
A cost estimate is the approximation of the cost of a program, project, or operation.

3.1.1.2 Time Estimates

Estimated time to complete is a projection of the time and or effort required to complete a
project activity. Estimated time to complete is a value that is expressed in hours of work
required to complete a task or project.
3.1.2 Working Principle:

This model parts are Geneva mechanism, motor, chain sprocket, roller, cutter and
spring. Two rollers are mounted according to the required distance the belt is mounted on the
rollers on which the paper is placed. The rollers shaft is coupled with the Geneva drive. The
Geneva drives shaft is coupled with the motor shaft hence when power is supplied to the
motor rollers rotate with a certain time delay according to the Geneva drive moves along the
rollers.
Motor connecting to the Geneva Mechanism. Motor has been on to rolling the Geneva so that
start to the paper roll. One roller has fixed on the try another roller connecting in Geneva
wheel. Cutter fixed to the Servo Motor. Motor shaft connect to cutter wire motor has been
rotating cutter is upon down motion then cutting to the paper this is the automatic paper
cutting machine by using Geneva mechanism. The following steps are followed for
conduction.
 When cam pin is in extreme right position i.e. engage position, the crank shaft will be
at extreme bottom position. Hence the cutter is in full open position.
 When cam pin is in extreme bottom position i.e. disengage position, the crank shaft
will be at extreme left position. Hence the cutter is in partial cutting position.
 When cam pin is in extreme left position i.e. disengage position, the crank shaft will
be at extreme top position. Hence the cutter is in full cutting position.

 When cam pin is in extreme top position i.e. disengage position, the crank shaft will
be at extreme right position.

Hence the paper cutting is achieved by above four process of Geneva and cutter.
3.2 DESIGN:
3.2.1 Data Collection:
It was hard to find the Motor which can be operated using Arduino Nano. So we
searched for it on Google, Youtube, Books, etc. We found a motor named Stepper Motor
Nema 17, Servo Motor MG966R.
We were having trouble for finding the Rod which is light in weight and could be
solid to use it as rollers. For this we got the information about the sellers from some people.
So we bought an Aluminium Rod from the market.
The next trouble was making the Geneva Mechanism. We made a graphic drawing
of Geneva Mechanism on the software named Autocad, but though there was a problem in
cutting it with the accuracy. We cut it on the Acrylic Sheet by tracing the drawing.
Again a trouble of Programming the working of motor in Arduino Nano as we were
not familiar with the technical feild. It took most of our working time for programming the
opertion of the Motor. Finally we found it on the Web. We just need to copy the program
from the web.
A problem of making the stepper motor run and the wiring connections. We got some
suggestions and help for an External Guide Mr. Sachin Sir and on the web.

ACTUAL PROJECT
5.1 Assembly And Working Of Project:

On the base plate two side supports (frame) are placed which contains Bearings that
rolls the rollers inside them. The Geneva Mechanism is placed on one of the roller, the
connecting rod which mesh with the Geneva is connected to the Stepper Motor which is
driven by the programmed Arduino. The Arduino is provided with the Direct Current.
Arduino is also connected to another Servo Motor which drives the Cutter placed in front of
the other roller.
When the paper is forwarded from where it’s wound, it is provided to 1st roller from
where its size can be varied using Geneva Mechanism. Then the paper is fed forward to
another roller which again rolls over it.
Then it is finally fed to the Cutter and according to the Servo Motor rotation it is cut
in the desired size.
• Here we propose the design and fabrication of a fully automated paper cutter based on
Geneva mechanism. Our proposed system cuts paper pieces of equal lengths based on
Geneva mechanism.
• System uses a stepper motors in order to drive the entire system. The motor is
connected to arduino. According to program arduino drives the motor and rotates
Geneva which feeds the paper.
• Here we use Geneva mechanism driven by another connecting z shape rod. This
mechanism ensures paper feed of equal length inserted at proper time intervals.
• Another motor is also connected to arduino which is connected to a scissor in order to
drive the cutting mechanism for cutting paper.
• System uses a supporting frame that maintains proper coordination between feed and
cutting mechanism.

CONCLUSION
8.1 Conclusion:
The design and analysis of paper cutting machine using Geneva mechanism will be
very useful for small scale industry. There are machine based on paper cutting but it has
demerits like large in size, costly, need skilled labours to operate. But we have our machine
which will overcome this demerit by compact size, less cost no need for skilled people. The
main aim of this machine is to reduce timing for paper cutting and neglect the time for
marking the paper. This aim can be achieved by our machine.
