Object of the report ndependiente del Valle's championship win in Copa Sudamericana 2019 was the icing on the cake of an innovative project which, in the last few years has proven to be an exemplary management model, nat only because of its sports results, but for the economic profits it obtained, The 3-1 victory against Colén de Santa Fe in Asuncién came as the big prize to an institution which, with only 10 years in Ecuador's first division, has settled in as a regular team in continental competitions. This achievement is even more epic if we consider the following facts: with an average of 26 years old, it was the youngest of the top four teams of the tournament. Besides, it was the least valued with a 11.3 million dollar budget; way below Corinthians (93.3 million USD), Atlético Mineiro (61.3 million USD) and Colén (26.6 million USD). Also, 11 out of the 25 players of the team came from its youth squads. Three of them (defenses Anthony Landazuri and Luis Fernando Leén, and winger Jhon Sénchez) were part of the starting lineup in the decisive match against Colén. Luis Fernando Leén was also part of the 2016 Copa Libertadores runner-up team. This shows to perfection one of the essential comerstones of this model born in Sangolqui (30 minutes East of Quito), who keeps reaping rewards year after year: the investment on its youth training program and integral work on this area. Independiente del Valle assigns between 30% and 40% of its budget (over 1 million USD) to develop their youth squads, the detection, and generation of talent. They also allocate @ great amount of money to infrastructure and facilities holding ‘over 100 youngsters, not only in football training, but also academic Independiente del Valle assigns between 30% and 40% of its budget (over 1 million USD) to develop their youth squads, the detection and generation of talent. ‘Authors Pablo Serna & Ramiro Hert The club’s signing and commercial policies, the value of its human resources and the work culture the institution is soaked in, the permanent use of technology and Big, Data, among other things, are part of the fundamental elements which, combined, led to the birth of this, “Ecuadorian miracle’. And of course, we should point out, the continuity of a game system and style over time, and the preservation of a stable base of players despite being mainly an exporter club. Independiente del Valle, a new and pushing institution, whose name has changed three times (1958, 1975 and 2007), is an example today for many other South American teams who wish for a competitive, organized, profitable team, with players who can grow in professional and personal level “I have always been very passionate about football. We found ourselves in a very special situation when we decided to take over Independiente, because we saw the chance of having a club that can work on the social aspect, intellectual and human progress of the players (..). The key to success is consistency. We have a serious team that is committed to a defined game identity. The long term process has made things easier for us", reassured to EFE international news agency in 2019 the club's honorary president and one of the architects ofthis inegriazul revolution’, Michel Deller, minutes before playing the final match in Paraguay. This report has the aim of describing in depth the structure of Independiente del Valle's successful model and elaborate on the main causes of this phenomenon that could bring, on the short and medium term, their first national Serie A championship in its history and, why not the attainment of the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores. Leaving socioeconomic excuses behind, any scenario can become the main stage of great achievement as long as @ projects followed and competent people lead the way. Despite the skepticisms all these can also be achieved in South America, A 2. History minutes away from Quito, Ecuador's capital, isthe city of Sangolqui. That is the place where José Terdn was born, grew up and fell in love with football That love for the most popular sport in the world pushed him into founding alongside a group of friends, on 1 March 1958, a club he decided to name Independiente. Terén, who was a janitor in Sangolqut City Hall and a shoemaker by profession, had an odd passion about Independiente de Avellaneda (TN: an Argentine football team); which he followed in all their campaigns through the mythical Argentine sports magazine ‘El Gréficot ‘El Rojo, as their fans calle it, was stating to achieve the big feats that would make it the one and only ‘Rey de Copas’ (King of cups). The name of the club, the colors and even the shield were inspired in the Argentine team. Starting in 1958, Terdn became the first President of the Sangolqui institution, besides being a player and the captain ofthe team. During the decades of 1960/70 Independiente started to {gain experience and challenge different teams from the amateur leagues of Ecuador. The players base at that time were Teran’s friends, those who helped him found the club and the same who played with him -in the city's square- friendly matches with college groups. In the beginning of the 70s, ‘shoemaker’ Terin was the captain cof Sangolqui's team and his local team -Independiente- was becoming strong in amateurism, accomplishing titles locally and regionally. In 1975 the unexpected happened. At 33 years old, and as a result of a strong peritonitis, Teran died. Following his sudden death, sadness invaded the lacker rooms and his friends decided to change the name of the club. In his honor, they named it independiente José Tern’ To the day of his death, José wished for his team to become as great as ‘El Rojo de Avellaneda’. He couldn't witness this, but the day of the club’s founding he left a message ‘negriazules’ will never forget: "Remember, this team will be great’. His remains rest today in Rumifiahui City Cemetery. 035 With its new name, Independiente José Teran stafted to achieve many titles in the neighbourhood, region and province. 1979 was the year in which they finally managed the promotion to Ecuadorian Third Division. There, they. battled for 6 years to make the promotion to Serie B, but failed. In 1985 they were relegated to Copa Pichinchaland made a comeback to professional football only in 1996. They stayed 11 years in the Third Division again, until 2007, 2 year that would be a turning point for the institution. 1961-1978 Copa! a 1979-1985 Th Dion 798195 | cops Pincha ae paloma lS 19462007 Thi sion 20082007 See Ben as Eee Lee In 2007, it all started to change with the arrival of Michel Deller to the club. Deller is the main stock holdetsfor Quicentro and San Luis shopping malls in Ecuador, the owner of the Kentucky Fried Chicken branch in Ecuador, many real state companies and one of the greatest fortunes in South America. Backed by other investors, he took lead of the club with the idea of achieving a viable project in the long term in football industry. After two years, Independiente José Teran was in Ecuador's First Division for the first time in its history During Deller’s management a new, innovative scheme was built based on different backbones we will see in depth later. Youth training The walls at IDV are stamped with phrases from the club former players. This image reflects much more than @ proposal to motivate the youngest, it is an idea with the purpose to generate a sense of belonging, an ideal to aim for, a life objective. Ana Carolina Lara, Education and Residence Coordinator for IDV, explained it this way during an interview in August 2016 for EGO DIGITAL media’ “Independiente tries for this to become their home. For this to be their family, their place, and for players to become brothers and friends. We seek to make the environment as familiar as possible. In is an environment of containment. There are people here who care for them, who watch over them. The phrases on the walls are from our players. What we intent is for our kids, by looking at them every day, to realize it is not such an unreachable thing. That it is our players who say that, the ones that are here right now, fighting on a semi-final in Copa Libertadores, and it motivates them to see these are attainable goals". A great part of Independiente'’s model success lies on the management of their youth divisions. The last Copa Sudamericana champion designates around 30% and 40% (over 1.000.000 dollars) of their budget to the training of young players. They are que founding stone of an integral, cutting-edge project, that not only worries about the players performance in football, but for their human development as well, IDV understands that, in ‘order to build teams capable of competing and consolidate in the maximum level, national and continental, they require a base of players trained in a global way in the club. Thus, they aspire to potentiate the characteristic football has to become a social mobility vehicle, therefore contributing towards the improvement in the quality of life of the players who take part init The adoption of a system that respects processes is the fundamental key in this new scheme, replicating the life cycle of a player in the club: Recruitment, Training, Competing, Evaluation and Promotion, Each of these processes counts with areas responsible for their implementation and monitoring (technical, physical, psychological, educational and scouting areas), and they interrelate to meet the goals. O5= Additionally, support is provided in three processes Medical, Operations and Human Development. These departments are led by the Sport Management and count with a coordinator, responsible for generating, alongside his work team, procedures and instructions for the ‘execution of the activities under his command. Andrés Larriva, Marketing and Communications Manager for IDV, perfectly summed up what the club's vision is regarding youth training in an interview for ‘El Telégrafo! newspaper in July 2016: “In 10 years of operation, Independiente del Valle has managed to build a worldwide reputation, being maybe cone of the best South American clubs in talent training. | believe, without a doubt, that the differentiating factor our institution has is related to the integral training of Ecuadorian talent. Here, we believe in high requirements and standards in sports level but above all, we bet on the development of human beings, to education. That's why we have an agreement with the Education Ministry, because in the club, the kids have the possibility and the obligation to get a high school degree as well as their sportive training. If we can make our kids, apart from good players, good people, educated in values, we will be delivering better human beings into the society” Respect, discipline, leadership, fellowship and honesty, are some of the values the institution tries to spread among their young players. It is not just about playing football well, the club's objective is to make their players an ‘example to the Ecuadorian society and, in time, the world, The sports entity provides housing, five meals a day, ‘education, healthcare and even a basic salary, which in Ecuador is around 400 dollars. In an interview with “Triéngulo Deportivo’, Ivan Vazquez, surrent Formative Divisions Director born in Santiago de Compostela, spoke in depth about the integral methodology applied in IDV about training young players. ‘The Spanish professional arrived in Ecuador in 2018 and is in charge of laying the guidelines for the aspiring football players. Such as it happens in Barcelona's La Masia, in IDV there is a system to train people as well as players, who ye tain life rules and a recognizable game respecte “Integral training is the fundamental stone of formative football. It should be like that in any club in the world. Not every kid ends up making a living in football. Nowadays, it isn’t ust to be a professional, but staying as such, Independiente is different because it brings many kids the opportunity to reach the elite in the club and outside. The amount of players that work with us, compared to those who arrive every day, is very small. We want to place greater value on the integral training. This is, everything we don't see as football. School, workshops, values and personal hygiene. If they are lucky ‘enough to make it, they would be prepared for everything they will have to face. Once you appear on a television screen, there will be many negative barriers to overcome. We want to train professionals who can leave that behind and stay on the right path and enjoy it’ Today, over 130 children and young people take part of the youth divisions of the current Copa Sudamericana champion. 95% of them live in the club campus. The few of them who don', are U-18 or first division players who decided to be independent. All of them, as a requirement, take part in the club’s educational center; a school with the same name, with five generations of high school graduates, In 2017, IDV published for the first time a Sustainability Memoira, in which they explain the cornerstones of their sportive project as four pillars: business management, infrastructure, talent and training. One of the objectives proposed in this last subject is that "60% of the football players of the professional team come from their own youth divisions, and that they dispute at least 60% of the available minutes’ They also add that “ideally, out of the 11 starter players, et se een ecg Coenen ee ee eae Dec eet ae nee etnos 2.To develop a training program based on group. conducts and following the desired player profile. 3. Scouts and Data Analysis No young man arrives to IDV's residence by chance. Each and every one of the applicants are analyzed in detail by a group of scouts who travel around the country in search for young talent. IDV has over 13 schools all around Ecuador, financed either by the institution or as a franchise. They track young players and disseminate the club's identity in a national level In an article previous to the Copa Libertadores 2016 final match between IDV and Atlético Nacional de Medellin, journal ‘Mondo Fitbol’ interviewed Roberto Arroyo, former Director of IDV's youth divisions and current Coordinator of the subsidiary team. During the interview, Arroyo spoke about the ways they work in terms of recruitment: “We are always thinking about the search for new players, but above all we try to raise men, people; the condition to create excellent players is to grow their human side. From our side we have organized a viewer's network across the country. In every area they tag players, in the original zone we make the first selection and after that, if we consider they're ready, we invite them to our sport center. We arrange tests for 3.000 to 4.000 players each year. They normally stay for one or two weeks so we can evaluate them thoroughly, in every aspect. Each one of them get their expenses refunded. We are the only ones who do this, at least in Ecuador’ “When we pick a player, we introduce them into our teams. The first youth category is for 11 year-olds. The last cone, for 18 year-olds. After that, the best ones take part in ‘our main team. Every kid playing in IDV's youth divisions receive education. We have an internal school, collaborating with the Ministry of Education, and we also help our players with their dietary habits. We also give them a small monthly economic help and provide every game equipment and two pair of boots a year. In conclusion, we think about everything. We have a ‘main structure in Sangolqui, but we build other schools everywhere in Ecuador, in San Lorenzo, Quinindé and Guayaquil, and a smaller one in Esmeraldas’. Alvaro Proaiio, former Technical Assistant of Ecuadorian U-17 national team, worked in IDV from 2012 to mid-2013, and was in charge of the club’s U:16 national champion team that year, The definitive match when they became champions, four matches before the end of the tournament, was against Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito ‘Authors Pablo Serna & Ramiro Hert His team crushed their opponent by 8:0, who was known as the Ecuadorian King of Cups. Proafio explained that the championship and the team's, level were results of the intense practice rigor, but also thanks to an excellent scouting network. “Besides the requirement of the double shift practice, there was another important factor, the scouting network the club has all over Ecuador, an unprecedented fact in our football. They always brought, at least once a month, around five boys per category, and each of them had ‘great technical conditions. What they look for in IDV's youth scouting are fast, strong players who can handle the ball’ the coach said. Besides the strong discipline in terms of scouting, the club follows a thorough strategy so that the players, coaches and physical trainers of all categories always come up first in national tournaments and compete with quality and hierarchy abroad. The formula that brought them to success was: filming, recording, editing, watching and reviewing every match they dispute. All games from U-12 to First Division are recorded. Each category counts with a camera man and there is an analyst for those films. This way, every match data is registered and the editor picks the game highlights so that coaches and players can see their rights and wrongs. In this sense, Francisco Quifiones, IDV's Creative Director, tells on how they work on this matter in a club's release: “Now we are more structured, we are a much bigger club, disciplined in our work methodology. Professors analyze the games. We count with facilities to record every match, we have every type of analysis and player stats, ours and our rivals’. There is a methodology that lets us go after players and adapt them to our necessities. Independiente has already found a game style. We have a scheme, we know what we're playing for, what our priorities and our needs are when we're searching for a player Pe CReC icy 7. Aspire Academy spire Academy is the most complete high performance training center in the world: internationally renowned for their integral sportive education program, the implementation of new technology to evaluate and measure the athletes, and their magnificent facilites. Located in Qatar seizing 250 hectares, counts with @ state-of the-art stadium -Khalifa Stadium- what will hold several matches in FIFA World Cup 2022. It also has ven annex natural grass fields, plus an indoor artificial grass field. Although it isn’t the only discipline practiced there, football is the main sport in Aspire Academy. ‘On 14 December 2015, in Quito's Dan Carlton Hotel, Independiente del Valle informed the media about the strategic alliance signed with Aspire Academy. During the ‘announcement, IDV's president, Franklin Tello Nufiez said about the agreement: 'We have been talking with Aspire ‘Academy for some time, and in the last months this communication intensified. As managers, we have traveled to Spain, where this three-year agreement was signed, and we will be benefitted from this academy's experience in the youth training specialization; to exchange ideas and, of course, receive training from the best professors in the world on this subject. The idea is, to improve the base that are our greatest treasure’ The agreement with Qatar's prestigious academy is based on sharing experience in football processes. During the negotiation prior to the signing of the agreement, IDV's directors presented the Qataris with the game style they wanted for their youth divisions and first team, After several months of work, and based on the information gathered from each match, they came up with a program of exercises, dynamics, coaches’ training and consulting “We told them how we wanted to play and they built a plan’, Luis Roggiero, one of the club’s directors, repeats in numerous public appearances during 2019. That's why itis normal that in IDV, from the U-12 team up to the professional team there are similar patterns on the field, leaving a small chance for chaos and leaving room for order, and in a way, o freedom with the ball The agreement between both institutions is standing as strong as ever. The collaboration is such that IDV's frst 108 team is coached by Spanish Miguel Angel Ramirez, a very young coach (35 years old), who has previously worked for six years in the Qatari ‘incubator. The Hispanic trainer replaced Ismael Rescalvo, who left for Emelec in Guayaquil Ramirez took the lead of the team after a long experience as a youth division coach. He started his career in his homeland coaching the inferior divisions of UD Las Palmas and, after 12 years he spent a few months in Alavés, while he studied for his PhD in Physical Activities Sciences in Vitoria. In September 2012 he decided to get in Aspire ‘Academy. There he worked as an assistant in the technical crew of U-17 and U-19 National Teams. After the agreement between IDV and the Qatari academy was signed, Ramirez arrived in the Ecuadorian club in 2018. After coaching different youth categories, on 6 may 2019 he took the lead of the professional team. The connection between the coach and the club was immediate: the Spanish trainer kept the game style the team had adopted three years ago, after signing the unprecedented agreement in South American football During May this year, in a YouTube interview show called ‘The Coaches Voices’, one of the shows followers asked Ramirez what were the most important lessons he had leamed at Aspire Academy. This was his answer: “There were many lessons leamed. | think the most important one was the work capacity, teamwork capacity, because in the end all of us were very different coaches coming from very different cultural contexts. So you had to adapt to different ways of thinking, to work with people from different nationalities. The experience in Aspire Academy also gave me a deep knowledge of the game and that was mainly thanks to Roberto Olabe (former Spanish player and coach, former Sports Director for Real Sociedad), and Mike! Antia (former Spanish player and coach, current second coach for China's Dalian Yifang); who were my peers and helped me in that knowledge of the game and also regarding the training methods. Learning in Aspire is like training on how to design a better training task, from content and concrete goals. In that sense and regarding the understanding of the integral education of the players, fone can make a quality leap and grow much more as a coach’. As a part of this alliance, there is another important subject related to the possibility for IDV's players, those who show great condition, to play -as in an internship: in the European clubs who also have an agreement with Aspire Academy. All of this is part of a program in the Qatari institution that promotes sports talent in a global ‘An example that shows to perfection this point is the case of Ecuadorian player Junior Sornoza, star of the team who made it to Copa Libertadores final in 2016, Once the tournament had ended, the attacking midfielder was transferred in loan for six months to Club Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, that played in Spain’s second division at the time (they are now in second division B, a third ‘ategory), Once the transfer was confirmed, Santiago Morales, current IDV's CEO, stated: "As a special request from Cultural Leonesa, which is also linked to Aspire ‘Academy, Junior Sornoza will be a reinforcement in that team, They are sure that with the help from Junior, they will reap excellent results and get the promotion’, It should be noted that, at the time, Sebastian Méndez -a player who was part of IDV's youth divisions- was also playing in the Spanish team as part of the agreement with Aspire Academy. This is one of the many ways players grown in IDV have trespassed borders and put the country’s name in the world stage. Ie 8. “Negriazul” DNA ears of work in the development and education of players, since 2007 they have built @ greater experience in the club’s management, which led to the definition of, ‘Independiente del Valle's style": We are talking about the seed planted in the youngest who, in the following years, will probably bring success to this humble institution that dreams big, DNA is the element that contains all hereditary genetic information that works as an “instruction manual" for our growth, life and reproduction. Referring to football, we usually use that term to identify a game way, a defined style and stamp that goes through every division of the club and can be noticed just by watching the first team's performance during a period of time. IDV's DNA is the expression in terms of football of this integral model which, as we have shown in this report, has a lot of sides to it. It is a product of a long-term work that requires the contribution of the players, managers, coaches, the club's staff and of course, their fans. Ivan Vzquez, Youth Divisions Director, explained in February this year to the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores official website: “There's common ground in every team, and that is because we have managed to create an identity. We have been successful by being loyal to our identity. | would be very sad if we won a league throwing the ball high, or signing the strongest, tallest or oldest players’ 120 ‘Authors Pablo Serna & Ramiro Hert There's no need for a blood test or a complex biological exam, IDV's DNA can be seen in every play of every match the different categories of the club play. For that purpose, their teams have common skils that are easily perceived in time of executing team maneuvers: 4 Rhythm and control over the game The pass asa mean of communication ¥ Depth Y The mobility of their players Y Playing along the sidelines Y Having @ zone responsibility and an individual mark responsibility Aiming for a short team that can play within 38 meters ¥ Playing as much time as possible on the rival’ field From this point of view, IDV's final goal is that in every category the game pattern is respected: a team trying to be the lead, have possession of the ball and attacks Everyone takes part in those dynamics: from the goalkeeper, who starts the play, to the strikers. The game understanding process begins in U-12 and extends to the back-up first division team. According to Vazquez, "kids are true sponges who absorb knowledge. They learn from the ‘exercises, automatizing them in their promotion to the new categories” ‘The difference between the U-18 and U-12 teams is related to the rhythm and development of the tasks. The oldest player, in general, has already leaned those concepts. Juan Carlos Leén, coach for several youth divisions and talent mentor for IDV, has shared his vision on the players’ evolution inside the institution during an interview for ‘El Comercio’ newspaper last November 2019. “At 12 years ‘old, they learn the game and begin to assimilate the first concepts. At 14 and 16 they start to compete. At 18, with ‘everything they have learned, they must have a global understanding of the game: it is one thing to be skillful but other is to understand the game. In this instance, they ‘would be just one step away from professional football” ‘At 38 years old, Cristian Pellerano is the club’s maximum referent and also a fervent advocate of his DNA. Central midfielder and captain of the team, the Argentine player is the thrust of the grounded, offensive gameplay of the Sangolqui team. In an interview for Argentine newspaper ‘Tiempo Argentino’, in March this year, the winger described perfectly the game style of IDV. “It is everything. The style, or idea of the game, is football’s ABC, in the sense that it gives the team an identity, the means to reach the objective: winning. There are many ways to play. The one we practice, | believe, is the best. Despite the fact that it is eye- catching, it’s a style where the ball possession guarantees not only the attack possibilities, but that the rival won't attack you, and to be able to defend yourself. It becomes much more evident when you can score. Sometimes, the lack of goal effectiveness leads to the whole idea not being relevant”. “1 started to play in this game style in Independiente del Valle in the last few years. Before that, they hadn't had coaches with such a clear idea of the game. | have had coaches who liked possession more than others, who might plan to counterattack or give the rival the ball and tty to catch them in a bad position. This way of playing, to control the game based on ball possession in most matches, | hadn't seen that before in IDV, and more so with the strong key movements that give you the possibility to take contro!’ Ri ter the end of Copa Sudamericana 20 én, Pellerano added: "We won playing football This team proclaims playing. Having accomplished it this way is the best’. A whole declaration of expression used to na sides being corr tiates values as a part of their institutional hilosophy, so fair play is pivotal inside the Cle game, as well as the rest of the institution and that is 138 9. The European fingerprint From the football and training point of view, IDV has a European fingerprint that can be seen everywhere. "The work that started in the Netherlands and, 20 years later was transmitted to the ‘Masia’ started a revolution in football and the way it is played”, Michel Deller remarked in an interview with EFE news agency in September 2019. Stars such as Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola, who Deller looks up to as examples to follow, are the ones who provided IDV with their new game strategy, where ball possession is a priority versus the disrupted gameplay characteristic in Latin American football In this sense, one of Deller’s goals when taking the lead of the club in 2007, was to introduce a European methodology that, beyond the board members, administration and football management, would stay rooted in the institution as a guideline to be followed by the directors, staff and players. The club's president, Franklin Tello Nufiez, when asked about the urge that led them to follow the European route regarding the management model of the institution, answered the following to the journal ‘El Telégrafo' from Ecuador: “We have looked for management models all over the world, and that search opened up a great source of knowledge through an agreement signed with Aspire Acadlemy in Qatar. Ultimately, it was the result of a search process and connecting with football's first world, which is mainly in Europe, and that allowed us to create our own model’ In order to emulate this style, the club counts with six European professionals in the spinal cord of the institution, Supported by technology and data, they are in charge of the short, medium and long term planning, the players payroll, practice sessions, day-to-day schedules, height and weight registry, matches calendar, etc. 148 Besides their Sports Director -lvin Visquez- and their coach -Miguel Angel Ramirez, the technical team of IDV counts with Fran Trujillo (physical trainer) and Felipe Sanchez Mateos (assistant); both Spanish nationals ‘They are joined by Luis Pastur Neira (former youth division coach for Deportivo La Coruiia) as the U-16 coach, and José Mato in U-18. Mato is part of the Football Coaches School (CENTED), a training center specialized in youth division coaches. Alongside the foreigners, many Ecuadorian professionals, complement great part of the work teams and transmit the country’s and the region's football character. This junction is the one that allows for the development of a machinery in which every piece takes part in the whole. A system ‘whose innovative processes are already established and try to improve every day. "The coaches who arrive to our youth divisions come to adapt to something that is already ‘set up; this means, to improve those processes. They don’t come to create something new. There is already a game style and now it’s time for adjustments, with the same training method. The plan is that in one or two years, in case we leave, the structure and methodology remain in the club’, the first team coach explained to 'El Comercio’ in January this year. To strengthen the European methodology, the coaches, physical trainers and assistants travel regularly to Spain to assist training courses, ance or twice a year. In the same line of work, a few months ago the club announced the arrival of Susi Cores to coach IDV's women's team ('Las Dragonas', ‘The Dragons’). The 35 year-old coach arrives with the experience of having coached Galicia's U-15 team in La Corufa. She will be another Spanish voice in Sangolqui The hiring of European professionals doesn't stop there. A few months ago, IDV hired a new goalkeeper trainer coming from Portugal. On the other hand, IDV’ affiliated team (Independiente Juniors) just hired a Finnish physical trainer. The goal, as always, is to keep gathering knowledge and better practices. marathi" 10. The ‘B team’: Independiente Juniors ounded on 13 July 2017, Club Deportivo Independiente Juniors (formerly known as Club Deportivo Alianza ‘otopaxi) is the sister ootball club of Independiente del Valle, It is a prof affliated to the Non-Amateur sional team in the ity of Sengolqui i's all Association of Pichincha) and is currently playing in Ecuador's Serie B During their second season s a professional team (2018), Deportivo Alianza Cotopaxi (third category in Ecuador's football) decided to associate and sign an agreement with Independiente del Valle so that the youth division players of the Sengolqut’s team could play on theirs in order to fight for the promotion. The base of footballers who played on that tournament are the ones who came up in second place in U-20 Copa Libertadores in 2018. That championship was led fram the beginning Alianza, who obtained their first professional tit their history. After being promoted to Serie B in 2019, through an yement signed by both m nagements, the club changed its name to Club Deportivo Independiente ping their facilities in the city of Latacunga (Cotopaxi province) he ®B team’ project was actually born in 2016, when IDV atten fed to make Espoli -a club playing in Ecuador's Serie B- their affliated model. After signing an agreement where IDV would lend players with the aim of earning the promotion, the negotiation failed management, aside from receiving IDV's players, The Espoli intended to keep absolute control over everything that happened inside the club. After this failure, IDV's managers began analyzing the possibility of associating with Club D ‘otopaxi accomplished it and with much success. tive Alianza They finally Nowadays, according to the institutional organization art, Independiente Juniors is part of the last traini step before a player joins the first team, After getting the second place in the U-20 Copa Libertadores in 2018, IDV fo. deci push their players’ pro ‘al competition even further. “For us, playing for Alianza doesn't mean playing in a second category. This is part of our training as professionals” -Renny Jaramillo, the team captain during the continental tournament, said 16" “Is a fundamental part of what we're doing, to give our young players minutes on the field. Taking part in the second category builds experience. This is not a youths tournament, they compete with adult men’, Juan Carlos L was a youth division coat to achieve the second place in U-20 A explained in several interviews during 2019. Len in IDY, he was the one who adjusted the strat Copa Libertador Independiente Juniors to the promotion to Serie B.In 2019 he of the ‘B team’ (he now coaches 9 de Octubre, a second category team in Ecuador). ss, and responsible of the plan that led as the coat “In Independiente | have worked from the U-12 to the second team. | went through the whole process and I'm lucky to be coaching the affliated team in Serie B. I have coached many generations, but the most successful is the ‘one that arrived at the club with me. | trained the players that made it to the 2016 America final match’; the coach stated in an interview published by ‘El Comercio’ in December 2019. The goal for IDV's ‘B team’ is that the young players can progress individually but also as a group. That they have the same concepts and game method they get in IDV. Every Monday the technical crew, with the club's leaders, sit down and watch videos of the matches. They analyze ‘every move, and whether they follow IDV's DNA or not. The management also try to give the ‘B team’ some autonomy, providing for an exclusive spot in their High Performance Center located in Chillo Jijén; offering the same facilities IDV's first team use, and a training plan built by Aspire Academy. A core characteristic of Independiente Juniors training style is that they teach their players to have autonomy on the field. “The training is detailed to the maximum. The technical crew intends for the player to be autonomous during the ‘matches. Even in this category we realize that the coach's instructions don't reach the players ears. You shout but they can’t hear you because of the crowd's noise’, Juan Carlos Leén said in an interview for ‘Ultimas Noticias news outlet in 2019 Independiente Juniors is an endless source of back up, for IDV's first team. It is the last step of a virtuous circle. that is completed when those young players put the Segolqu's team jersey on. During a press conference given a few months ago by IDV's coach Miguel Angel Ramirez, a reporter asked about the season's targets. The Spanish answered with a sentence that reflects the B team’ importance: “In terms of signing players, we will always count with our ®B team’ players, who are our priority. There's time to bring any other player and in case we don't find anything in the local market, we will stay true to what we are, and keep promoting players from our youth divisions” During 2019 and before the coronavirus pandemic break, Independiente Juniors was very close to getting promoted to Ecuador's Serie A. However, on 21 November, the tournament organizer ruled they couldn't be promoted to the First Division Independiente was already playing the final instances (they ultimately lost against Liga de Portoviejo). The, reason? The existence of a conflict of interests with Independiente del Valle. On 23 May this year the, sentencing was confirmed by the maximum authority, of Ecuador's Football League. (On their side, through a press release, Independiente del Valle stated that despite the fact that they had been proposing a regulation for affliated teams, they accepted the decision made by the League. “Considering article 98 from the Executive Committee of the FEF, they promoted in 2018 the creation of Club Independiente Juniors, along with the proposal of the affiliated teams regulation, with the objective of complementing the training process of their players and offer them a competitive platform to endow them with tools to arrive better prepared to the first team”. “Even when IDV has made uncountable moves in order to achiove the approval of said regulation, we salute the LigaPro's decision that leads national football towards transparency and fair play, in order to avoid any possible conflict of interests in the near future”. 11. A country’s project When building IDV's structure, Michel Deller thought he had to lay the foundations so thatthe club could transcend the sports achievements, and deliver a real message of solidarity, union and optimism to the Ecuadorian society. Thus, since its creation, the institution as a whole proposed themselves to be responsible with all of their stakeholders, who are their groups of interest. They are their suppliers, customers, players, trainers, fans, and everything that surrounds the club, from its geographic location in Sangolqui, to any aspect related to the team -internally and externally- that involves people or other organizations. Deller's premise: to preach with the example, 2016 was a historical year for IDV, reaching the final match in Copa Libertadores, but also because of their humanitarian gesture that goes beyond any sportive success. The Ecuadorian team donated the proceeds from the tickets sales of every home match they played during that international competition to those affected by the earthquake that happened on 16 April in Ecuador. The donations reached 957.000 US dollars, mainly because of the proceeds from the matches against River Plate, Pumas UNAM, Boca Juniors and Atlético Nacional (all of these were played in the Olimpico Atahualpa Stadium), Fondos recibidos por taquilla Collection vs Collection River Plate ve Boca Jrs $181.503,82 $217.357,07 Collection E Collection vs Pumas vs At! Nacional $160.032,10 [PA)) $348,982.38 TOTAL COLLECTED FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE EARTHQUAK! “In name of the United Nations and everyone affected by the earthquake, I want to express our sincere gratitude to Independiente del Valle and their managers. | believe no other football team in the world has ever made such a large donation, Nuno Queiros, representative of the United Nations Development Program, pointed out at the time. Every activity carrying the “Independiente del Valle brand, is followed by social commitment. The club not conly complied to donate the tickets proceedings, but also organized a program to help the small businesses affected by the earthquake get back on their feet. Along with the UN Development Program, they implemented the ‘En Marcha’ (In Motion’) project. Francisco Quifiones, Creative Director for IDV, told ‘Bendito Futbol’ in September 2018 the motivation after the initiative: "We wanted to potentiate and have a greater reach with the donations, we had to choose between specific, smaller deeds, or settling in and trying to reach a larger number of people to attain sustainable development The project consisted in empowering small entrepreneurs in Manta and Portoviejo. In a 4-month period, they carried on the following activities: survey, diagnosis, assistance and renovation, ‘188 With those results, they worked on three main axis to impulse the businesses: strengthening, innovation and renovation. The program was executed in 252 businesses with a total of 1330 participants, resulting in sales increase and considerable profit margins. In line with the club's solidarity and social responsibility IDV also signed a cooperation agreement with Ecuador Special Olympics, a project close to the institution's, values. The agreement considers the use of the club's, facilities, as well as the trainer's cooperation to support the progress of differentabled athletes, who represent the country in different international competitions “This way we can count with a fixed location with great conditions to train our athletes’, Héctor Cueva - President of Ecuador Special Olympics- said when signing the agreement, Among other things, IDV and its strategic associates will also hold every year La Copa Internacional Mitad del Mundo (Half of the World International Cup). It is disputed in the club's High Performance Center, with the participation of 12 guest teams. IDV covers the accommodation and food expenses for every foreign club, as well as the transportation inside the country, generating an indirect economic impact in their own community and city. The tournament proposes to value the work made by the youth training institutions, and congregate, through sports, different American countries and even from other continents, promoting fair play and talent promation, As part of the integral training process, every delegation visit the province's main tourist attractions (Historical Center and Half of the World city). It should be noted that Copa Internacional Mitad del Mundo is broadcast by one of IDV's main sponsors (DIRECTV) for Ecuador and the rest of South America, allowing for the dissemination of the tournament for millions of people, Besides their intention and the message IDV wants to transmit to the community, their successful business management is what allows them to execute such actions. From the beginning, the club has been managed as a business, in a very responsible way. On one hand they present a clean, sustainable financial balance, and on the other, itis one of the few teams who is not in debt with their players. They also don't have debt with the Internal Income Service, “We have overcome a gigantic political, economic and ‘emotional crisis, and Ecuador needs positive news and union. Three years ago, when Independiente played the finals in Copa Libertadores, they brought the people together and therefore it would mean a lot to be able to bring a victory now", said Michel Deller before winning Copa Sudamericana Clearly, IDV is not only the project of one or more managers, nor the hobbyhorse dragged by sport success, its the project of a whole country. The club has bet on solidarity and resp successful because they placed themselves on that direction. They didn't just get their fans applause, but that values, and they were of a 16 million people country who have become the actual team followers. 12. Results 12.1. Final conclusions Independiente del Valle is everything his founding father José Terén had dreamed of. To talk about this team is ‘referring to an innovative and revolutionary project, submerged in a decimated South American football The intent of having the best youth squads in Ecuadorian football has become a reality in a short time. These young ‘men not only train in the club, but receive constant education, integrated to the values as the main axis. The Sangolqui team works in processes and manages with serenity a progressive objectives plan, which they have been accomplishing, even ahead of the established schedule. The team’s motto, ‘NEVER STOP DREAMING’ shows the importance of our dreams, desires and objectives, and the club has become a platform to achieve them with passion, responsibility and dedication From the beginning, the club was created with the intention of training the future champions of Ecuadorian football With this in mind, they proposed themselves to educate good people with the same responsibility they train the best players. With an analysis structure and exemplary scouting, year after year they have managed to identify the promising talents of Ecuador and place them in a High Performance Center (one of the best in Latin America), where they have access to housing, food, education, psychological assistance and a great amount of first class human and sport ‘Additionally, nowadays IDV is an avant-garde institution in the region. Aware that the transfer market is looking for younger and younger footballers, the Club interpreted the need to improve the last training phase without this ‘meaning postponing sporting goals. How they do it? By creating their B Team. In this way, they put their young and talented lads to compete with professionals before others do. When they reach their fist team, they already have a competitive experience that is highly valued in the transfer market. From its origin IDV kept a social responsibility commitment. Today itis @ well-respected institution that works as @ vehicle that helps football transcend its ordinary meaning. For the sport lovers, this ‘Ecuadorian miracle’ has become a flagship of the potential football has to promote education, culture and pride for their country and people. This project started with the wish to make things differently, to be dreamers and therefore an example of what being a ‘rayado’ ‘means. Although the team counts with a young fan base in its short history, Independiente del Valle jersey is respected in Ecuador and the world, turning into a symbol of responsibility, solidarity and the result of the mind force, daring to dream and seeing beyond. There are many upcoming challenges. For instance, the construction of the club's new stadium is already in progress, which will have a maximum capacity of 50.000 people (the seats will be added gradually as the club's fan base grows), Whether itis in the mythical Rumifiahui stadium or their new home, Independiente del Valle will definitely reach their original dream, closing one of the most successful cycles in South American football: being Ecuador's champion.
