1.0 INTRODUCTION

Leadership is an ability of a person to lead or guide followers or members of an

organization such as a company or a family to achieve goals. Leadership requires making hard
decisions, developing, and articulating a specific vision, setting objectives that can be
accomplished, and providing followers with the resources and tools required to achieve those
goals.

Leader is not always someone who lead a big company, it can also be someone who lead
a small organization such as a family. As we all know, a person who responsible to lead a
family is a father. He is responsible to make a big decision for the sake of his family so all his
family members can live a better life.

In this essay we will talk about one of our group member father’s. The man behind a
successful family named Usnadi bin Osman is an immigrant from Indonesia who come to
Malaysia to find a job and support himself. He is born on 21 January 1957 in Kota Malang,
Indonesia and die on 02 February 2019 at Hospital Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia. He is raised by
his parent in Indonesia. One day he got an offer to work in Malaysia and after a few years
working here, he decided to marry to this young woman named Asia binti Kembongod.

We choose him as a leader to write on this essay because he has always been an
inspirational leader to his family. He is also a very good role model to his family. Other than
that, he also show a good characteristic as a successful leader.
2.0 LEADER’S STRENGTHS

A leader needs to have a strength to lead a group of members for them to achieve their
goals. Such as other leaders, Usnadi bin Osman also had several strengths in leading his family.
One of his strength is a good communication skill. Communication skill is important to
everyone especially to a leader. A successful leader tends to show a high level of
communication skill when working or talking to others. A leader with good communication skill
tends to be a good listener, able to listen actively and obtain information by good questioning.
Usnadi have a very good communication skill. This shows when one of his children have a
problem in their life such as a financial problem or school problem. He will talk to his children
privately and ask them what is the problem that they are facing. He will listen to what his
child wants to talk to, and he will make sure his child feels that his emotion is valid. While
listening to his child problem, he will also try to ask a question that related to his child problem
and he will give his opinion about the problem. Before giving some advice, he will also ask
what his child next move is and why. He does this to make sure his child feels like his voice is
important.

Other than that, Usnadi also have a good planning skill. As a leader it is very important to
be organised and have a good planning skill. A leader needs to know how to plan their next
move and be able to turn it into reality. A good planning can help the leader to avoid things
going wrong. For example, when his family facing a crisis such as financial crisis, he will be
the one to plan on how to manage this problem with the help of his family. Each of his family
member has an emergency saving and those saving can only be used by the owner of the
saving. This is how Usnadi try to overcome a problem in the future, which is he already plan
on how to prevent his children from facing any problem related to money. When the family
facing a problem, he will try to solve the problem step by step. Firstly, he will address what is
the problem, how did that problem happened, think what is the best way to overcome the
problem, ask his family opinions regardless the topic and together with his family he will plan
what step they should take next and what is the possible situations will happen.

Last but not least, Usnadi is also a good role model for his family. Like it or not a follower
will always look at their leader as a role model in their life, especially in a family. A good leader
needs to set a good example to their follower for them to follow. A few characteristics and
actions that we always look at our leader is a confidence. Usnadi is someone who always
positive, calm, nice and confident in himself. He will always celebrate his and his family
member achievements, no matter how big or small their achievements are. This shows that
he is someone who always appreciate his efforts in everything and take that as a motivation
to strive for bigger achievements. He is also someone who is not afraid to be unique or
different than others and always show respect and concern for others. He is a supportive
farther and show respect on his children decision. He always says that “everyone will notice
if you are taking them for granted, not showing gratitude, or stepping on others to get ahead.
So never take anyone for granted and always be nice on people”. His words and action will
always be an inspiration for us to be a better human in the future.

3.0 Leadership Styles

Before having a child and family, men will say that they have always been self-centred.
However, taking responsibility for the child will make the father fall into an unbalanced
relationship and father will start to bear greater responsibility than the child. A family is very
similar to an organisation or community organisation. Therefore, by applying the leadership
in family sector, can ensure greater success and happiness for the entire family and every
family member of the family.

In our family, father was a transformational leader who used his strong personality
characteristics to influence and affect the lives of his followers that means family members in
our family. Transformational leaders like my father found motivation from within and use it as
a motivation to effectively manage the direction of their children. The best natural motivation
is to love what you do and to ensure that your values are aligned with those of your family.

Transformational leaders can make those around rise to the occasion. Inspiration
comes not just from a formal motivational speech or simple recognition for a job well done,
but by treating people as individuals and taking and the time to understand what motivates
and inspires their team (Hoggs, 2012). According to Northouse (2016), “inspirational
motivation is communicating a high expectation to followers, inspiring them though motivation
to become committed to and a part of the shared vision in the organization.”

This was my father who inspired me to take chances not just on the sports field but in
the classroom though inspiration motivation. I still remember I was failing in the courses that
I must get better grade. That did not deter my father to ensure I got my grades up. Through
his inspiration, I raised my grade point average into the courses the following year.
4.0 HOW TO BUILD LEADERSHIP SKILLS (TRANSFORMATIONAL STYLE)

Leadership skills are important in any organization because they promote strong teams
and the ability to complete tasks effectively. To build leader skills, firstly must be a person has
discipline. A person who has discipline will be an effective leader and to inspire others. It is
because people will judge your leadership ability based on the personal discipline that you
demonstrate at work.

Besides that, I may show “soft” leadership skills, such as patience, empathy and good
listening, while my colleagues show advantages in risk-taking and decision making. This is
because no matter what your natural strengths are, developing leadership skills that are
compatible with these talents is the key to improving work efficiency.

In part of person discipline, I may demonstrate discipline at work by always meeting

deadlines, keeping appointments and ending meeting on time. At the same, early step out of
my comfort zone, take more challenge to improve myself. More work will let us learn how to
solve the problems in different type situation. Learning new things to keeps our mind sharp
and our skills fresh. It primes us for new challenges that may come on future.

Next, to be hired for a leader will need to be a critical tinker. As leaders should be
foreseeing potential problems before they happen, also develop ways to prevent problems. In
other words, be proactive. Do not wait for things to happen. Instead, anticipate them and
help the team prepare when problem arise. Determine the cause and take preventive
measures to ensure that they will not have negative impact on employees, the company and
customers.

Leaders must know how to deal with difficult employees and resolve conflicts. If the
employee is not doing his or her best and has a negative attitude towards work, as leader
must step up and talk privately with the person. Therefore, communication will be one of the
powerful tools. If we are an excellent communicator, we can solve most problems and
overcome most obstacles. A good communicator is not only an excellent speaker, but also an
excellent listener. A good leader is to listen suggestions, ideas, and feedback of others and
use it as a basis.
5.0 CONCLUSION

Good leadership skills are essential to our career development, but from the explain can
see, leadership skills are much more than control. A good leader is not a person who
discovers the best from the best, but a person who has the ability to show the best from the
worst. As the American politician said: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn
more, achieve more, then you are a leader.” We must step above to grow our skills, so
when that big opportunity does come in future, we will be READY!
