Consolidation Test
Objectives
To determine the rate and magnitude of settlement in a laterally confined soil when subjected
to a particular axial load
Introduction
Soil Consolidation refers to the process in which the volume of a saturated (partially or fully)
soil decreases due to an applied stress. When a load is applied in a low permeability soil, it is
initially carried by the water that exists in the porous of a saturated soil resulting in a rapid
increase of pore water pressure. This excess pore water pressure is dissipated as water drains
away from the soil’s voids and the pressure is transferred to the soil skeleton which is gradually
compressed, resulting in settlements
Consolidation test is used to determine the rate and magnitude of soil consolidation when the
soil is restrained laterally and loaded axially. The Consolidation test is also referred to as
Standard Oedometer test or One-dimensional compression test. This test is carried out on
saturated soil specimens, especially in cohesive soils. The consolidation parameters obtained
by this test are used to determine the consolidation settlement and time of consolidation for a
given loading state on a footing,
In the laboratory the consolidated test is conducted by applying a vertical load on top of the
soil specimen and measuring the rate of settlement with respective to time. Two main
parameters were obtained from this experiment
The results of consolidation test are very much helpful in the design of foundations.
Theory
Apparatus / Materials
• Consolidation rings
• Loading device
• Stopwatch
• Two porous stones
• Dial Gauge
• Two circular shaped filter papers (d-50 mm)
• Grained soil sieved from 2.36 mm sieve
• 10 Kg weight
Procedure
Testing Procedure
• The consolidation chamber was placed on the center of the loading pad so that the
applied load would be directly axial
• The dial gauge reading was set to 0
• Then the desired load of 10 kg was loaded on to the machine
• Next the screw was loosened and readings were taken at the time intervals mentioned
in the lab sheet
Conclusion
Soil Consolidation refers to the process in which the volume of a saturated (partially or fully)
soil decreases due to an applied stress. Consolidation test is used to determine the rate and
magnitude of soil consolidation when the soil is restrained laterally and loaded axially. The
consolidation parameters obtained by this test are used to determine the consolidation
settlement and time of consolidation for a given loading state on a footing. In conclusion the
test was performed successfully and the results were satisfactory
