Oscar Wilde

u Oscar Wilde was born on the 16th of October 1854 in Dublin, Ireland.
He was the son of Sir William Wilde and author Jane Wilde and the
second of three children.
u Anglo-Irish playwright, novelist, poet and critic.
u He’s regarded as one of the greatest playwrights of the Victorian
Era.
u Oscar Wilde only published one novel throughout his life. The Picture
of Dorian Gray was met with critical reviews because of homoerotic
content.
u After his release from prison in 1897, Oscar Wilde lived in France in
straitened circumstances. In 1900 at the age of 46, he died of
menigitis.
The Setting

u The setting is in London in the late 19th century during the Victorian
age.
u London was transformed into the word’s largest city, and became
wealthier.
u Nevertheless milions of people still lived in extreme poverty.
u But the main characters in The Picture Of Dorian Gray belong upper
class. (the grandfather, with whom he was brought up after his
mother's death, was a lord).
The Plot

u Dorian is young, rich and handsome.


u Has a much older friend called Lord Henry.
u Basil Hallward makes a fascinaiting picture of Dorian Gray.
u The picture makes Dorian wish to stop aging.
u His wish is fulfilled and the picture starts aging instead of young
Dorian.
u The portrait shows his soul.
The Characters

u Oscar Wild said the main characters were reflections of himself:


„Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry is what the world thinks
about me: Dorian is what I would like to be – in other ages, perhaps”
Sees him self as Basil Hollward

u Basil Hollward:
u Art is more real to him than life.
u An idealist who truly believes in the inborn goodness of people.
u Basil continues believing that Dorian must still have piece of good in
him, if he can continue to look so beatiful.
u Murdered by Dorian Grey.
u Basil Hollward shows sign of homosexuality, as well as Wilde did.
The world sees him as Lord Henry
Wotton
u Selfish aristocrat.
u A charming talker
u Wilde was also a person who likes to study people and think of
immoral theories.
u Wilde was judged less homosexual by society then he was actually
feeling.
