Question one

a. Your mindset is a set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself.
It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation.

b. Back yourself: To succeed in sport, you really have to want it for yourself; you have to
be your own biggest believer. If you’re passionate about the sport and you want to be
successful, you, above anyone else, have to go out and fight for it and believe in yourself.
That can be a hard thing to do because a lot of obstacles come up along the way. But
believing in yourself and going after what you want are very important.

Get the community behind you: One of the most important things you can do is
share your journey – including at Tokyo 2020. There are so many people out there who
want to hear about what you’re doing. They want to be involved in your journey. Being
an Olympic athlete is such a unique and special thing, and letting your local community
be a part of the whole process is very important.

Use setbacks as an opportunity: Just like the story of Sifan Hassan in the Olympics,
you don’t have to give up that early having encountered such a challenge, this could be
your opportune moment to rise up again and beat the odds by not lagging behind in
dispute trying to figure out your next move and later wasting a lot of time. Foam yourself
and get back on board as soon as possible.

Start thinking about a ‘Plan B’: As you get older, you should make sure that you’re
aware of what comes next. I know sometimes that’s hard to think about when you’re
competing and when you’re focused on being successful in a sport. But it’s important to
think about your life after sport because we never know how our sport careers are going
to go. Some people are fortunate enough to be able to make the decision and say, “I’m
done. I want to move on.” But some people unfortunately don’t get that decision.
Sometimes injuries are the deciding factor. So, having a plan B becomes really important.

Nothing worth it ever comes easy: Whatever comes up along your journey, you can
handle it and you can get through it. Obstacles always come up on your journey, but it
strengthens you and it strengthens your character to get through them. The experiences
that you gain overcoming these challenges will help give you the strength you need on
this journey. The motto that I always live by is that, “Nothing worth it ever comes easy.”
The struggles that you face and the challenges that you overcome make everything you
achieve more worthwhile in the end. You can stand on the podium or not, but it’s
important to know that you have given everything that you possibly could have done.

c. Creativity: Problems are usually solved either intuitively or systematically. Intuition is

used when no new knowledge is needed - you know enough to be able to make a quick
decision and solve the problem, or you use common sense or experience to solve the
problem. More complex problems or problems that you have not experienced before will
likely require a more systematic and logical approach to solve, and for these you will
need to use creative thinking.

Researching Skills: Defining and solving problems often requires you to do some
research: this may be a simple google search or more rigorous research about a big
project for example in the Olympics field.

Team Working: Many problems are best defined and solved with the input of other
people. Team working may sound like a 'work thing' but it is just as important at home
and school as well as in the workplace.

Emotional Intelligence: It is worth considering the impact that a problem and/or its
solution has on you and other people. Emotional intelligence, the ability to recognize the
emotions of yourself and others, will help guide you to an appropriate solution. school as
well as in the workplace.

Risk Management: Solving a problem involves a certain amount of risk - this risk
needs to be weighed up against not solving the problem.

Decision Making: Problem solving and decision making are closely related skills, and
making a decision is an important part of the problem-solving process as you will often
be faced with various options and alternatives.

Question Two
a. A mind shift is a change of focus and perception. It can have extraordinary power to
make relationships more positive and healthier; to improve your focus and rate of
success; and to build self-esteem and overall happiness.

b. Prepare for the response before catastrophe strikes: Expect the worst and hope
for the best; in other words, consider your worst-case scenario and plan for how you
would react. This is a practice that dates back a few thousand years; ancient-Greeks who
followed Stoicism used premeditation as one of their most effective methods for
navigating the challenges of everyday life. This practice consists of visualizing the day
ahead and anticipating all of the challenges that could arise. If the worst does happen,
having thought about it ahead of time will prevent you from becoming completely
swamped with panic and fear. Instead, you’ll be able to keep a level head and rationality
that will keep your anxieties and stress at a manageable level.

Defeat the negative attentional bias: When you’re going through a challenging
time, it can be really easy to feel like the world is crumbling around you. When one
setback hits, we oscillate between dwelling on what led up to this moment and
anticipating the next pitfall that’s going to pull the rug out from under us. While it’s
important to get a grasp on the reality of your situation, you’ll hold yourself back from
moving forward if you frame everything in a negative way. Rather than focusing on the
bad parts, it’s critical to cultivate an optimistic mindset and positive outlook in order to
optimize your ability to adapt.

Create inextinguishable motivation: You can’t expect to know what you’re doing if
you don’t know why you’re doing it. And it’s even more imperative to have a clearly
defined ‘why’ when life gets tough. But if you don’t have a strong reason of why you are
pursuing something in the first place, you’re giving adversity the power to completely
knock you off of your journey to success.

Know how to get out of the neutral zone: More often than not you don’t have
control over what happens to you, but you can take control over how you react. Feeling
sorry for yourself will only hinder your ability to come up with a solution to your
situation. It’s impossible to determine your next steps if you are spending all of your
time moping around and playing the “what-if” game.
Those who struggle to overcome adversity often stick in the neutral zone for a long
time. The ability to move past that feeling of loss and hopelessness and propel into the

phase of new beginnings is what allows successful people to come to terms with their
adverse situation

Lean on your sense of humor: It may seem cliche, but laughter truly does have a
therapeutic effect on our bodies that we need to cope with stress. In fact, smiling and
laughter release the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is responsible for producing
feelings of happiness and stress relief. It may seem impossible to find the irony in a
catastrophic event, but sometimes it can be your first step to coming to grips with your
reality and moving forward. And while you may not be laughing in the midst of a major
setback, in time you should be able to find a bit of humor in your stroke of bad luck. Not
only will it lighten your mood, it will also aid in building the resilience that you need to
face some major hardship.

Take inventory of your strengths: One of the reasons that successful people are
able to bounce back from a challenge is because they know they are capable of hard
work. Though they may feel distraught or upset about an unexpected situation, they
never allow themselves to feel powerless. Instead, they take an inventory of their
strengths and find ways to propel themselves forward.

Invest in yourself: The greatest investment a person can make is in their own
personal development, and successful people recognize that there is no greater time to
invest in themselves than when they are faced with adversity.

c. I feel incredibly proud to say that I am a citizen of the Netherlands and also an Olympic
champion.
I feel very empowered by that because when I was younger, I thought that I was never
going to be anything or achieve anything because of who I was and to be an Olympic
champion now shows that you can achieve anything.
As a young lad, I felt challenged to take on bigger assignments and this has inspired me
to keep pushing for greater height to this day and I owe this to my hard work, patience
and love for what I do. When I was coming to attend this event, I was quite sure I would
encounter challenges but never the less I have overcome them the reason I have these
precious gold medals. I would therefore like to inspire the youth world over to pick a
leaf from me so that you may even do better that me in the future. Finally, I would like
to thank the Almighty God for this precious gift and will treasure it wherever I go.
God bless you All.
