CONTRAST BETWEEN FACE-TO-FACE LEARNING AND ONLINE LEARNING

TO STUDENTS’ DILIGENCE

I. INTRODUCTION

Because of human ingenuity, curiosity, and hunger for broad knowledge, the world and its
ideas are always changing, and it is up to everyone to decide if they are ready to ride the wave of
possibilities and opportunity. As the world changes, humans need to adapt and endure the changes,
especially in education. As humans transition to the new normal, students must understand the
common ground of online learning. Face-to-face learning has different aspects than online
learning. Also, teachers must change their strategy and plan for providing knowledge to their
students.

As parents, students, and schools battle with the rising cost of education, online learning
alternatives are growing. There is a perception that online classes are a more cost-effective way to
provide certain publications. There are several advantages to taking online programs. Even though
students and teachers are in different locations, they are still linked. This allows even those in rural
locations to participate in the classes. Otherwise, you might not be able to get in. Students can
adapt their study time for asynchronous courses to meet their personal schedule. This allows for
more flexibility, which is especially beneficial for students who have family or employment
obligations that are not often associated with undergraduate students. Without increasing class
size, more students can absorb content at the same time. Although the online approach allows for
more flexibility, it also requires greater discipline on the part of both students and teachers.
Students should make every effort to complete the activity within the specified time. They must
develop discipline to perform their best in class and complete assignments on time. Teachers
should prepare ahead to ensure that all material is provided and reviewed in a timely manner when
a class does not meet at a specific location or at a specific time.

As technology has become more prevalent over the years, Technology has overhauled the
lifestyles of humans, including educational purposes. The Internet has become a necessity for
human needs. Implementation of technology towards school and educational improvements can
cause less utilize of textbooks. According to statistical trends and research, technology-based
learning can cut the time it takes students to achieve new learning objectives by up to 80%. When
books are available in electronic form, people are also more inclined to read them. This proves that
technology dominates any system given to this world, especially the learning system.

Technology was not given an exception to the society; it is like given to us as a gift. Also,
humans tend to change the old tradition for the better and convenience of the society. As stated by
C. Khanlarian (2015) that humans have many aspects of the globe have altered throughout the last
200 years, especially national boundaries. Even though humans have limits, average temperatures,
and populations, humans still continue to educate the same manner that people possess for decades.
Countless years. The use of technology to assist students in learning has been one concession to
change. The development of new technologies has improved civilization throughout history.
Humans realize the relevancy of technology to their lifestyle, especially for those students who
utilize technology as part of their academic activities. As for the change to a new and better lifestyle
because of discoveries and improvements, However, as humans become more comfortable in life,
that can somewhat bring out negative behavior. Also, this can affect one’s diligence in academic
learning. By learning about each difference and find the answers for our thesis by finding materials
about old traditional learning and new traditional learning.

As textbooks became less relevant because of the start of online learning and the use of
the internet as a search engine for information, Humans tend to rely on the internet because of its
many possibilities. There is still one aspect that textbooks have that the internet doesn’t have,
which is that students cannot be distracted away from their goal. With the use of the internet, you
may be getting distracted because of curiosity. As part of using textbooks, also, face-to-face classes
are more prevalent when it comes to studying. According to searches and statistical trends, more
students preferred face-to-face classes rather than online learning. It shows that students are more
satisfied on learning when it comes to face-to-face learning.

This study covers only the aspect aspects of face-to-face classes and online learning when
it comes to student’s diligence. Such as Student’s academic discipline. This study does not cover
face-to-face learning and online learning’s negative effects to students’ behavior. Also, student’s
academic performance during online learning and face-to-face learning.

II. Body

Face-To-Face

It is believed that students that are in a face-to-face class are more efficient in studying
and finishing tasks in a shorter period. They are factors that give them the benefit to have focus
and study diligently. One major factor to that is students are guided and supervise by teacher.
According to Miliszewska I. (2007), Face-to-face gives student better motivation to study. Also,
face-to-face interaction with their instructor provides better for the learning process. Aside from
all beneficial factors, there are still flaws to face-to-face learning when it comes to student
diligence. Given the time of learning that consist of 8 to 12 hours of class and given the homework
to do and studies after class. Also, some implement of part time class every Saturday or any given
weekdays. This can cause burnouts to those students who studies a lot that carries stress for a long
period. According to Epps T. (2021), that 85% of college students that feeling overwhelmed, also
50% of the students experienced levels of stress that impacted their academic performance
negatively. Students may develop laziness or make adjust to their time of studying, for a longer of
time may derive to being less diligent than before.
Student Behavior and Discipline

Discipline is the one key factor of once life; this is the first prioritize to be developed to
bring out the structure of the human’s life. Student behavior utilized this discipline to produce
positive character development. Also, Students may develop positive perks that can be utilize by
students to their day-to-day activities. Diligence is one of the perks that students can be develop
from proper discipline; diligence are one of the benefactors for better academic performance.
Diligence is one to be consider as above all aspect of Ideal student. According to the given survey
of Bergland C. (2021), that Both learners and educators value more the conscientiousness of a
hardworking and enthusiastic learners over someone with high intelligence who is academically
gifted. Nevertheless, not all children are fortunate to be given a proper discipline. Also, Discipline
cannot be permanent to once life. This may lead to insecurities and out of control that may hinder
students’ academic performance. According to the survey of Kamal M. and Bener A. (2009), that
one of the given factors of school failures are cause of frequents absence from schools which
results to 33.3%, also incomplete homework with the result of (45.9%). This given factors of
school failures comes from less disciplined students. This shows that discipline if one of the
important factors to diligent in any kind of learning platform.

Online Learning

Online education allows both the teacher and the student to determine their own learning
speed, as well as the extra flexibility of creating a schedule that fits everyone's time. There is no
need to give anything away because using an online education platform provides for a better
balance of work and study. According to Gautam P. (2020), Educational institutions all around the
world are seeking for online learning platforms to help them continue teaching their students.
Today's new common is a new idea of education, with online learning at the center of this change.
Digital learning is quickly becoming a crucial resource for students and teachers all around the
world. For many institutions, this is a whole new type of education that they must implement.
Online learning is increasingly appropriate not just for academic studies, but also for students'
extracurricular activities. The demand for online learning has risen dramatically in recent months
and is expected to rise further. According to Michelle E. (2021), Online learning for kids makes it
easier for students to learn. To engage in an online program, students must be organized, self-
motivated, and have excellent time management skills. Online learning techniques can be an
excellent alternative educational medium for mature and self-disciplined students, but they are not
appropriate for learning settings that rely on the learner. The fundamental advantage of
asynchronous, online learning is that it allows students to completely participate in high-quality
learning scenarios where distance learning makes on-the-ground learning difficult or impossible.
The difficulties of online learning may have a significant influence on children; loss of motivation,
self-discipline, and the need to study are some of the most serious issues that children confront.
The lack of efficiency of technology, the difficulty for students to understand the topics taught,
and online learning promotes social isolation and resulting in students not acquiring the essential
communication skills are all disadvantages.

III. Analysis

Face-To-Face

Face-to-face proved its results by satisfying students from their learning. Give proper
attention and help by educators. It is effective in teaching students and motivates them to ensure
the future of the students. Through their schoolwork’s, students improve their discipline, which
in turn motivates them. According to Johnson D. (2017), that the teacher’s responsibility in
motivating students includes providing a learning environment. Students' willingness to learn
is also influenced by the teacher's ability to increase their competence, interest in the subject
presented, and sense of self-efficacy. As it shows the ability of face-to-face learning, this
proves that students become disciplined and diligent even without proper guidance by their
parents. With the help of teachers, students discover new knowledge without difficulty, to
understand and it has a chance for students to find something interesting and can be pursued
by the students to their future. The only downside to face-to-face learning is when students
have to prioritize going home and doing other things before doing their homework. This is too
much to do, and so students' health cannot compete with it. A given day-to-day task may not
be capable of fulfilling one's ability, which may cause poor academic performance and loss of
diligence and efficacy to learn.

Students Behavior and Discipline

The key point of this research is knowing discipline thoroughly. In order to take
disciplinary action, the school is first required to address the student's academic performance.
One way to measure someone's level of discipline is to see how diligent and competent they
are with their studies. The use of a value-added rubric in lessons can determine how flexible
students are when it comes to levels of difficulty in their lessons and finishing task with value
to it.

Online Learning

Online education has some benefits and disadvantages. Online education allows
students more time to learn and also more time to do their assessments. Students are given
more time for chores and leisure time. and also, given the fact that students and some teachers
are not required to go to school, which is comfortable for them because of less hassle without
going to school to attend class and their work. As for the disadvantages of online education,
the implementation of this learning program, students have their own pace of doing their
assessments and reading their lesson, because more time is given to the students, and they
become less diligent and lose their efficacy to their education. This may promote distraction
to students because of the use of gadgets for learning and for leisure time. The lack of
knowledge about technology and gadgets may affect students' academic performance. Do
students who are self-disciplined have the advantage over their peers.

IV. Recommendation

Based on the information given by the analysis. The following recommendation as

followed:

Give students survey about their health and Academic Discipline

Discipline is the main factor of diligence and efficacy to study, by giving survey to students
about academic discipline teachers may determine each and everyone’s problem. Teachers can
implement or rid of such as activities to help students to be self-discipline and for the better for
their health.

Implement reading comprehension games and activities in online education

This way students may use their leisure time for creative and learning activities which
students develop competence and efficacy. This also improves once vocabulary and self-discipline.
Students may develop not be distracted when its time of class and doing assessments.

Provide chances for cooperation and sociability

Even in an online classroom, teachers may promote socializing and teamwork. Teachers
may build group projects and have online students join and work together using video calls.
Teachers can also organize smaller group sessions with students to work with them, allowing them
to talk more openly and collaborate in a more conducive setting.

Encourage students to put what they've learned into practice.

Helping students bridge the knowledge-doing divide by having them apply what they've
learned right away. Each lesson should include knowledge and a student activity. Teachers need
to provide context for knowledge. By discussing case studies, they may discuss how they can apply
what they've learned. The sooner they put the new knowledge they've learned into practice, the
more likely it is to remain in their memory.

V. Conclusion

In summary, many students still prefer the discipline and familiarity of face-to-face
learning, there is no doubting that online learning has great benefits. A student’s effort in
doing tasks is more noticed when having face to face classes. The self-paced nature of
online learning can be extremely beneficial for both students and teachers. Although online
learning has its good benefits students would not learn social skills and lack motivation.
That is why having alternatives for teaching a lesson online are more welcome to help the
students get motivated and put in effort.
