Reflective Journal:
Make a short reflection on the novel considering the following important points:
Part 1:
From the characters of Noli, choose at least five characters and consider who are their counter
part today. For example, who is Crisostomo Ibarra for you today then discussion why you
consider him as such.( 10 points)

 Juan Crisostomo Ibarra y Magsalin – He is an example of people who has a vision and
educational imagery for knowledge with a particular emphasis on students. Because of
their idealistic and liberal minds, as well as their openness to new changing
environments and people with whom they associate, considering them/us as
Crisostomo Ibarra would be a great reflection of him.
 Maria Clara – Represents toddlers because of their pureness and naivety as shielded
born and bred youngsters in a world where individuals with colonial thoughts exploit
the helpless.
 Padre Damaso Verdolagas – He represents persons in positions of authority who abuse
their power and look down on those who do not cater to their needs, which I believe
can be compared to Padre Damaso.
 Elias – Elias shows the expected average Filipino who is not really knowledgeable of
their homeland’s prejudices but also wishes to liberate them from their oppressors.
Because of their lack of knowledge about the country's issues, they tend to oppose
almost all of the proposed ordinances and policies, disrupting the country's peace.
 Padre Salvi – He was considered as a cunning man who uses his religious stature for
political influence. Basically, it represents some of the elites who manipulates the weak
and poor for personal agendas.

Part 2:
After reading the summary of the novel, which was provided in your lesson proper through the
slide share, point-out the significance of the novel in the formation of Philippine nationalism.
You can discuss it by considering the impact of the novel to the Filipinos who we’re able to read
the novel during Rizal’s time and to you as a citizen of this country today. (the essay should not
be less than 300 words)

Dr. José Rizal, the Philippines' great patriot, has been praised not just for his erudite greatness,
as well as for taking the moral high ground and refusing the Spanish colonizers authorities. Rizal
was outspoken in his opposition to the Spanish state, and in a peaceful and harmonious sort of
way. For him, "the pen was considerably more powerful than sword," and he revealed the
corrupt practices and indiscretions of politicians and other Spanish friars through his
manuscripts. Rizal excoriated Spanish colonial system of governance and outed the ills of
Philippine social structure at the period in his novel. Since he authored about the inequities and
cruelties perpetrated by Spanish people in the country, the authorities prohibited Filipino
people from reading the divisive novels. Nonetheless, they were unable to totally prohibit it.
When more Filipino people read the literature, they realized that they had been subjected to
horrible injustices at the hands of the friars. Rizal's two works, now regarded creative classics,
are thought to have launched the Revolutionary Movement implicitly. The Philippine Revolution
lasted after his demise until 1898. On June 12, 1898, the Philippines proclaimed independence
from Colonial rule with the help of the United States. The Philippine flag was raised at General
Emilio Aguinaldo's house in Kawit, Cavite, at this time.
Dr. Rizal's intelligence, selflessness, fortitude, and patriotism are still revered and cherished by
Filipinos today. Individuals and organizations are constantly analyzing his novels. And in
Philippines, universities and institutions even compel learners to study up centered on Rizal's
life and writings. Each year on December 30th, Filipinos honor Rizal's life and works by
celebrating Rizal Day. His stance for achieving independence through diplomatic negotiations
instead of violent revolt is also well-known.
It’s a global sentiment. It is universal since it is genuine regardless of race; it is perennial as it’s
relevant at any period; and it is prompt because it is accurate, especially in today’s Philippine
context. Noli Me Tangere is an exploration of the affliction that gnaws at Philippine societal
moral foundation.
