Observation Project Draft

- In which group of speakers have you noticed variability (differences)?

I have noticed variability in the use of the language in young adults.

- What differences have you noticed?

Young adults are using new words to communicate among them. For example,

instead of saying “friend”, they say “mijin, bro, llave, pana, etc.” Sometimes

they shorten words. In the same example, they shorten “brother” to “bro” to

mean friend. They also pronounce some in a slide different way words.

- What linguistic item would you like to observe/analyze in your Observation

Project?

I would like to observe how semantic items are used in communication in this

group.

- What are the social and teaching implications for the variability you expect to

find?

I think that we as teachers must know this variation and try to use it to facilitate

our students' learning process.

- How are you going to collect data? When? And Where?

- I will use a chart to contrast the different ways how teenagers say words. I am

going to observe and collect data during the next weekdays. And I am going to

do this observation during breaks and free time in my workplace.

Introduction

State the language item you picked and the reason behind your decision.

Language is continuously changing, adapting, and evolving to the need of the users.

Daily, we communicate with different society who has their proper way to express

themselves. Semantics can help us to understand better the meaning of words used by a

particular group. We will interpret words and get different meanings of them. For

example, young adults use different words in Spanish to refer to “a friend” while they

interact. So, Semantics can help us to understand how young adults use different words

to refer to “a friend” in their conversations.

Body (3-4 paragraphs) Identify specific examples. uses and characteristics of the use,

demographic information about the interlocutors, and setting. Recognize the pattern

created and relate it to the information from the reading you have done.

Conclusion Write about the implications of your findings on the EFL classroom. Write

at least one technique you could use to improve the implications of your findings on the

EFL class.

Semantics is a study of the meaning of words or sentences by creating a common

understanding of things. Thus, semantics can help us to have a better understanding of

each other.
