Unemployment is one of the most serious problems facing developed nations today. What are the
advantages and/or disadvantages of reducing the working week to thirty five hours?
Nobody is a stranger to the fact that unemployment is one of the vital issues facing developed
countries these days. To my way of thinking, there are both pros and cons in equal measure to this
initiative.
There is no shortage of reasons, why, as far as I can see, there are benefits to this proposal. In the first
place, it improves workers' health conditions if they only work 35 hours a week. This means less stress
for employees. On top of that, reducing working hours can create more jobs for others. For instance, if
a factory cuts down the usual working hours from 40 to 35, they may have to hire additional people
to keep up their production level at the same as before. Accordingly, factories and organisations can
take on new staff. For example, a 24-hour convenient store needs to ensure they have enough
workers o cover their shifts days and nights.
Having said that, however, the downside of this proposal, as far as I am concerned, is no less
significant. The problem that springs immediately to mind is that operation costs get higher compare
to the past. If a company was forced to hire more workers to produce the same amount of goods,
then its wages would rise and its product might cost more to make it. This could put a company in a
disadvantaged situation, especially if they are in a high price-sensitive industry. For example, in fast
food in western countries, many customers are low-income groups.
In my own experience, the way things are when it comes to this issue in my country, China, bears a
strong resemblance to the state of affairs the world over. My home city of Nanjing is a textbook
example in this regard. Here, competition for jobs is much fierce due to the large population. Many
young people find it very hard to get jobs. The government provides tax cuts to the companies
as a result of hiring more people.
When all is said and done, there are merits and drawbacks to the same degree to every choice we
make, both as individuals and as a society. This matter is no exception to that rule.

WHAT TO DO NEXT:
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job

Discuss both these view and give your own opinion.

band Discipline can be imparted into children by various methods in which smacking can be one
of them. Some parents think that affecting children physically is the best way to bring up children with
good discipline. This essay will argue that smacking has not necessarily been the best way to grow up
children with a well behaved mannerism.

Computers and the internet have changed the lives of humans in both workplace and homes. This
essay suggests that the advantages like socialising and time saving outweigh the primary
disadvantage that is isolation among the family members.
Some people believe that children should be taught more practical subjects rather than
4 art culture. to what extent do you agree.

Nowadays,it is often thaught by some people that the subjects which involve practical knowledge
should be given more weightage rather than subjects like art and history. While I accept that art and
literature are essential part of school curriculum,I believe that practical subjects would be beneficial
for students to become skilled learners. Art and culture are significant subjects ,as there is no point in
developing generations, who knows nothing about their history and culture. These subjects provide an

individual the sense of responsibility and belongingness towards the culture.Being creative and
imaginative is another feature which could be promoted by art. This is because some children are
particularly gifted in their creative abilities, and studying art can help them nurture their talents. For
instance,M.F hussain was a great painter whose paintings were appreciated worldwide.Furthermore, art
is a form to express ideas and thoughts;hence it should be included in school programme. However,I
believe that subjects with practical implications should be given importance in school due to several
reasons.Firstly, these subjects are based on realistic knowledge,so students could apply this knowledge
in daily activies,as a result they need not to memorise the content of practical subjects. To
illustrate, students could easily understand the concept of perimeter and area through measuring the
length and breadth of any object.Secondly,if students take maths and science as their major
subjects, they could enroll theirselves in professional degrees. Therefore, they would aquire skill, which
could be beneficial for students to get higher paid jobs. To conclude, although art and history have its
own importance as it could provoke creativity amongst children,I believe if more emphasis would be
given to practical subjects then this could help students to attain bright future in regard to job
market.
Technological advancement brings about people more easily to get access to acquire knowledge
from the internet. There is a tendency to believe that the role of conventional secondary schools and
teachers can be replaced by the internet. Yet, I do not agree with the statement as attending school
still has its significance.
