The All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) conducted by National Law University,
Delhi for admission to its law undergraduate course is regarded as India’s
toughest entrance examination related to legal fraternity. Additionally, it is also
the most densely competed law entrance examination in the sub-continent
wherein as much as 25,000 students compete for a meagre sum of 123 seats. Out
of these 123 seats, 55 berths are reserved for students domiciled in Delhi.
Therefore, applicants from Delhi enjoy a special-edge over applicants coming
from other regions across the country.
The total breakdown of seats in NLU, Delhi for B.A.LL.B (Hons.) course as per their
official website is as follows:

The application fees for AILET, 2020 is 3050 INR for General and OBC and 1050
INR for SC and ST. The applications are invited only through online mode.
This examination consist a total of 150 questions that are spread over 5 different
Sections/Subjects, namely:
i. English
ii. Elementary Mathematics (Numerical ability)
iii. General Knowledge
iv. Reasoning
v. Legal Aptitude

I. ENGLISH
This section contains 35 questions asked from varying sub-heads like
Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Verbal ability, Idioms and
Phrases etc. Each question contains 1 mark and every wrong answer leads
to a deduction of 0.25 marks.
Out of the permitted 35 questions in this section, 9-10 are reserved for
Reading Comprehension. The Reading comprehension may include long
passage as well as short reading comprehension and sometimes Central
theme spotting.
The grammar part includes questions asked from tenses, correct spelling,
figure of speech, preposition etc.
The English Proficiency part includes Sentence Rearrangement, Idioms &
Phrases, Noun, pronoun, Conjunctions etc.
The difficulty level of this section is hardcore and it is the most typical
section out of the five sections in this examination.
A month or two months long preparation is not enough to crack this
section. Scoring well in this section requires at least an year long oriented
preparations.
Tips to excel:
Read Novels and quality literatures.
Make a habit to Watch English movies and shows.
Keep a pocket dictionary always with you and memorize 10 words a
day at free time (like travelling in metro etc.)
Concepts of Grammar should not only be memorized but clarified too.
IV. REASONING
The Reasoning or Logical Reasoning section also consists of 35 questions.
The primary aim of this section is to test candidate’s analytical and
interpretation skills and his/her sense of understanding and
comprehending skills.
The topics covered by this section include Statement & Conclusion, Blood
Relation, Family tree, Analogy, Assertion and Reasoning etc.
The assertion and Reasoning and statement-conclusion questions require a
special focus.
Other than those listed above some relatively easier topics like Coding and
decoding, Ranking, Directions and Distance, Number test etc. are also asked
in this section.
Tips to Excel:
The difficulty level of this section is Mediocre but solving these
questions consumes a lot of time, so practice as more as possible in
order to enhance your efficiency.
The series of topics given above are not exhaustive and some other
topics related to testing your Reasoning ability might also be included
in this section, so prepare your mind for the same.
V. LEGAL APTITUDE
The Legal Aptitude section contains 35 questions coming from topics like
Law of Torts, Law of Contract, Criminal law, Constitutional law, Legal G.K,
Legal phrases and maxims etc.
Broadly this section has 2 distinct varieties of questions that are Principle &
facts and Legal G.K/awareness. The Principle-fact questions form a major
part of this section. In these questions a given principle is applied to the
facts given in the question in order to come to the correct
judgment/conclusion/option. While in the Legal G.K/awareness section
knowledge and awareness related to legal field and law are tested.
Tips to Excel:
Make a habit to read important/famous case laws, especially those
laid by Supreme Court of India. Reading them will not only add to
your legal G.K but will also help in understanding the facts and
application of principles in an efficient way.
Sometimes facts of a real case are asked in the question and if the
student had read the judgment of that case then it becomes
extremely easy for him to come to the correct option.
Memorize important Legal phrases, Maxims and terms on a daily
basis.
