1. Describe the Deck Cadet Structured Onboard Training Program Record

Book(TRB) including the authority to issue the same (10 pts);

The Deck Cadet Structured Training Programme Record Book attests to

satisfactory completion of the tasks required for compliance with the requirements of

the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and

Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978, as amended in 2010 (STCW 2010).

The purpose of the programme is to help ensure that a Cadet is enabled to and

makes the best use of the time at sea. It list practical tasks required to be carried out

on board, in accordance with the STCW 2010 provisions relating to minimum

standards of competence for officers, particularly in charge of a navigational watch on

ships of 500 gross tonnage or more (STCW 2010 - Code Table A-II/1). It also lists the

criteria for assessing the Cadet’s progress.

2. Explain the Objectives, Scope, and application of the Structured Onboard

Training Program for Deck Cadets(10 pts);

1.2 Scope

The scope of the practical training enables the Cadet to:

 gain experience in relevant aspects of shipboard activities as they occur;

 test and compare the knowledge acquired on campus with the daily practice on

board;

 consolidate and expand theoretical knowledge;

 build practical basis to achieve the standards of competence that accord with the

relevant requirements of STCW 201, including with table A-II/1 of STCW 2010;

 prepare for a future position on board.

1.3 Objectives

The Cadet will acquire basic seamanship skills and practical awareness of the need to

follow safe working practices and also be able to keep a navigational watch safely, in

accordance with the relevant regulations and recommendations.

The objectives of the programme are to:

 direct the practical training so that the Cadet is guided as to the objectives of the

practical training period;

 give guidance to the Master, Shipboard Training Officer and others regarding the

tasks to be performed on bard in order to achieve the desired competences;

 direct the Assessment Criteria so that the required training outcome can be

reliably and fairly proved and documented.

Paragraph 6 Onboard Training' of Section A-II/1 of STCW 2010 requires that

every candidate for certification as officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships

of 500 gross tonnage or more whose seagoing service forms part of a training

programme approved as meeting the requirements of that section shall follow an

approved programme of onboard training which:

 ensures that, during the required period of seagoing service, the candidate

receives systematic practical training and experience in the tasks,duties and

responsibilities of an officer in charge of a navigational welch, taking into account

the guidance given in section B - II/1 of the STCW Code;

 is closely supervised and monitored by qualified officers aboard the ships in which

the approved seagoing service is performed; and

4. Describe the Assessment Tools used for demonstrating proficiency of the

cadet to the satisfaction of the Onboard Training Officer(OBTO/STO)(20

pts.); and

The assessment tools used for demonstrating proficiency could be a practical

demonstration, an activity performed to the satisfaction of the STO or his designated

deputy, oral questioning and/or by completing a project in the Project Work book.

The STO should ensure that the cadets have undergone an

induction/familiarization on safety, security and relevant shipboard procedures before

they are assigned to shipboard duties.

5. Describe the Structured Onboard Training Program Activity Work Book

and its contents for cadets including the Project Work (20 pts)

The purpose of the Activity Work Book is to ensure maintenance of a written

record of the relevant tasks carried out on board. Completion of tasks requiring

documented evidence, eg calculations, lists or procedures, to be recorded to ensure a

written record of the tasks carried out on board.

The Activity Work Book contains the relevant tasks for the following functions, for

which documented evidence is required:

 Navigation

 Cargo handling and stowage

 Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board including ship

security.
Santos, Mico Noel D. Polaris 3A
The purpose of Project Work is to ensure that the Cadet becomes thoroughly

acquainted with the ship and operations, especially with the bridge.

The projects are to be checked by the Shipboard Training Officer and evaluated by

the Company Training Officer. Projects are to be ship specific with respect to the type

of equipment or the nature of the operations carried out. Each project is to be

accompanied by appropriate diagrams, sketches, photographs and checklists. These

projects are structured assessment activity tasks where the cadet gathers relevant

information himself during the time allocated by the STO. The aim is to check

whether the cadet is able to use all the resources available on board and demonstrate

written proficiency in the concerned topic. The STO must check that the written

information is worded appropriately and by verbal questioning confirm the Cadet’s

understanding.
