Activity 9

1. State the different shipboard operations the cadet has to assist with
the duty officer as assigned by the Master, Chief Officer or any qualified
officer (20 pts);
A deck cadet is an apprentice who has to learn the basic duties of a deck
officer on board a ship. The Cadet will carry out all jobs and duties assigned to
him by the Master / Chief Officer or any other Officer. He will report to the Chief
Officer, or in his absence any other Officer delegated by him.
In addition to his training / learning, he will also assist in all shipboard
operations, particularly in the following:
I. Watch-keeping at sea or at anchor, under the supervision of a
certified watch keeper.
II. All routine maintenance on the deck – cosmetic upgradation,
greasing, repairs, etc.
III. All operations involving cargo work, especially hold / tank cleaning
operations.
IV. Assist the Duty Officer in ballasting / deballasting operations.
V. Assist in maintaining all deck stores and their inventories.
VI. Assist in preparing necessary shipboard paperwork, as required.

2. Discuss the grounds of suspending or discontinuing the cadet's training


contract(15 pts); and
On board ships, misbehavior and an anti-social attitude are not allowed.
Seafarers who use abusive language, including racism, sexual harassment,
have an aggressive attitude, or engage in objectionable personal habits may
have their employment contracts suspended or terminated.
Suspending a training contract permits both the employer and the
apprentice/trainee to suspend the duties connected with the training contract in
order to protect the apprentice's or trainee's interests. A suspension period can
occur for a variety of reasons, including:

 seasonal employment
 apprentice or trainee chooses a gap or study year outside of the
apprenticeship or traineeship
 long term illness
 maternity or paternity arrangements.

3. Discuss the Lacsonian Core Values that cadet has to possess and
achieve the success in the seafaring career(15 pts)
Lacsonian Core Values, the I-PLEDGE.
I - Integrity is the practice of being honest and showing a consistent
and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and behavioral
principles and values.
P - Perseverance is persistence in doing something despite difficulty or
delay in achieving success.
L - Loyalty is used of a very personal or powerful kind of faithfulness.
E - Excellence is the quality of excelling, of being truly the best at
something.
D - Discipline is s the practice of making people obey rules or
standards of behavior.
G - Godliness is the quality of being devoutly religious. The practice of
godliness is an exercise or discipline that focuses upon God.
E - Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal
opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents.
