PROBLEM

ABSTRACT
AT THE END OF 2021, HAWAII WOKE UP TO THE FACT THAT THE
DECADE'S OLD "RED HILL' PROBLEM HAD REERED ITS UGLY HEAD
AGAIN WHEN SEVERAL LOCAL CITIZENS REPORTED THAT THEY
WERE SMELLING PETROLEUM WHEN USING THEIR WATER.
UNBEKNOWNEST TO THE RESIDENTS AT THE TIME, THEY WERE
SLOWLY BEING POISONED BY THEIR OWN TAP WATER. MANY
PEOPLE BEGAN REPORTING THAT THEY AND THEIR PETS WERE
FALLING ILL

DURING A TOUR OF THE RED HILL FUEL FACILITY IN DECEMBER,

THE NAVY TOLD STATE SENATORS THAT THE JET FUEL THAT
CONTAMINATED THE DRINKING WATER OF THOUSANDS OF
MILITARY FAMILIES POURED FROM A PIPELINE AND WENT
DIRECTLY INTO THE WATER SUPPLY VIA A DRAIN LINE THAT THE
NAVY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WAS THERE.

OBJECTIVE
THESE FUEL STORAGE TANKS ARE SITUATED IN A VERY
SENITIVE AREA BECAUSE THEY ARE ONLY 100 FEET ABOUT
ONE OF HAWAIIS MAIN SOURCES OF WATER. THIS PROBLEM
HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR DECADES AND THIS IS NOT THE
FIRST LEAK. THE US NAVY HAS PROPOSED MANY PLANS TO
FIX THIS PROBLEM. THE STATE OF HAWAII HAS ORDERED
THE NAVY TO STOP THE USE OF THESE TANKS FOR NOW.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE? ITS A 80 YEAR OLD FACILITY BUT
IT IS THE LARGEST FUEL TANK IN AMERICA AND IT IS
IMPORTANT TO THE SECURITY OF AMERICA BECAUSE OF
THE ONGOING SERIOUS THREATS FROM ASIA. BECAUSE OF
THESE TWO VERY SERIOUS ISSUES, HAWAII'S DRINKING
WATER AND NATIONAL SECURITY, THE NEED IS TO FIX OR
MOVE THESE FEILD TANKS NEEDS TO BE EVERYONE'S TOP
PRIORITY
 STATEMENT OF NEED
There are many issues that the people of Hawaii will run into. Not only will the people
directly affected will be, the state as a whole will too. Some of the problems include the
budget to fix, people who do not have clean water, and all in all, it is just a major
inconvenience. Starting off with the budget, to replace these tanks could run in the
billions. Some Estimate a project like this one to run between 4 and 10 billion dollars and
30 years to complete. While what we plan wont directly fix the problem, we plan to lessen
the damage as much possible. As it was stated before, this has been an ongoing issue for
80 years and is said to take another 30 years to fix. This idea is to develop some sort of
filter that can get rid of the petroleum so it is safe to consume. The big idea is to somehow
implement that into the water tank so even if there is a leak, the water would still be safe to
drink. The people that have polluted water would benefit greatly because they would not
have to worry about falling ill due to problems that they have part in making.

PROJECT IDEA AND METHODOLOGY

My partner and I chose to address this issue because it is
affecting a great deal of people and we wish to try and help as
much as possible. As of right now, they are currently draining
the water tanks and not using them to eliminate the possibility
of someone getting sick.

Evaluation
The quantity part of this project is to try help as many people as possible and
try experiment as much as possible. The quality part of this project will relate
to how well we can accomplish our goal. We do not want to do minimum
work that relates to people health issues. The point of our project is to make
sure the people are safe and they can go back to their daily lives.
 Dissemination
One way that the word could be spread is through the news and newspaper. We could
create internet post letting people know about the work we are trying to do. If we were
to posy flyers, we would post them in the are that is affected by the water pollution and
hopefully from there, word spreads and we get known.
