ABSTRACT

The internship program was designed to give industrial experiences to student on

what are they going to expect to work like once they finished their studies. Student
must prepare a final report as an evidence of their internship experiences to be
evaluated by the lecturers. This internship report in broad-spectrum contains four
chapter in which I try to explain within my 10 weeks experiences in hosting a
company. From the practical basis of the maintenance line in 10 weeks, I have
constructed and explained broadly the content of all chapters. In the first chapter
which is introduction, I describe the company background, history, mission and vision.
Introduction chapters also includes features that stand out from other company. This
give details of the company in terms of reader can easily know and access the
company. Next, the second chapter is industrial environment which is describing the
overall section that exist in the factory. This chapter explains my overall internship
familiarity. It also described about the safety features that every department has and
how it differs from each other. The employee must follow the rules of what
department they are in. For the third chapter, which is industrial experiences that
describe the processes of maintenance. Those are the process that I am allowed to try
only certain things due to safety, high cost of the equipment and race against the clock.
It is obvious that the internship has an advantages in term of improving new
knowledge, skills and different abilities. The experiences that I’ve gains in the
internship was arranged in short and prices way to grasp the attention of readers and
evaluators. In the final chapter, which is industrial projects, I involved into three
departments which is checking the plans submission of external water supply which is
piping and plumbing meters from consultant according to PBAPP and SPAN
specifications, maintenance and inspection on the PRV, Magflow meter and check
plumbing leaks and inspection and maintenance in piping and valve when it was been
located at new place. Although, the project must meet the Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan
Air Negara (SPAN) in order to regulate and monitor economic, technical and social
aspects of the water and sewerage industry in Peninsular Malaysia.

1.1 Background

Figure 2 History of PBA's Water Supply (2021)

 Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the 5th Chief Minister of Penang, officially opened the
Expanded Mengkuang Dam (EMD) with an upgraded effective capacity of 86.4
billion liters. PBAPP supported the Penang State Government’s decision to
officially take back the EMD from the Federal Government in October 2020,
although the following two phases of the MDEP have not been completed:
1. Phase 2B: Laying of 7.0km of a 1.6m diameter raw water pipeline from the Mak
Sulong Pumping Station to the Sungai Dua WTP to upgrade raw water draw
down capacity from 300 MLD to 600 MLD.
2. Phase 2C: Construction of the 440 MLD Lahar Yooi Pumping Station to enable
the pumping of additional raw water from Sungai Muda during wet seasons.
 For strategic reasons, it is more prudent for Penang to have the EMD’s raw water
reserves on hand in 2021, to mitigate the twin threats of climate change and the
on-going Covid-19 global pandemic.
 The Penang State Government and PBAPP have proposed for the Federal
Government to set up an independent Ulu Muda Basin Authority (UMBA) to
protect, manage and conserve the Ulu Muda Basin sustainably for the benefit of
4.2 million people and all the businesses in Perlis, Kedah and Penang that
contributed an estimated RM147.8 billion to the national GDP in 2019.
 The UMBA’s role would be to manage Ulu Muda and Sungai Muda holistically,
sustainably and equitably as key components of a protected NCER water basin.

4
PBAPP has suggested for the UMBA to be modeled after the Murray-Darling
Basin Authority (MDBA), a federal statutory body which is managing the
Murray-Darling Basin in Australia as one water resource for 5 Australian states:
Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Victoria
and South Australia.

2.0 INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT

During my placement, I gained practical learning experience working under the

supervision of a professional. My supervisor assigned me to three different
departments to learn about, each of which has a superintendent officer in charge of me.
They were kind to me, and I was able to contribute my ideas and insights to their
work. At the same time, they provided me with a productive and positive learning
environment. I try to apply what I've learned in class to real-life situations. Despite
being assigned to the planning department which work in the office, my jobs
occasionally required me to went on site visit, warehouse, and technical departments
as well.As a result, I consequently had countless chances to get to know and interact
with many of the staff members here. The training has improved my ability to interact
with others, especially peers and superiors. Dealing with them is a lot of fun
especially when they're eager to assist and clarify concepts for me that I don't
understand. During my internship, my tasks and projects required interaction and
communication with engineers, technicians and coworkers.

16
4.0 INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS

The industrial project done by practical students based on job scope. While we were
doing project, we must took safety actions as well and running the project followed
the procedure to avoid any injury. In addition, we must also maximize the quality of
work piece and project. We completed the project in planning time to avert any
addition cost.

4.1 Vetting Plan Submission From The Consultants

My replacement timetable for the planning department is four weeks. I've

learned a lot of new things throughout my internship in this field. In this planning
department, it require me to work in the office. Firstly I must learn about plans
requirements of external water supply according to SPAN (Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan
Air Negara) and PBAPP (Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang). In addition, I also
need to learn about external meters in plans, learn about meter in more details in term
of size, types and material, learn on how to calculate CCF, learn on how to calculate
water demand, need to check type of drawing with appropriate scale, need to check
engineer’s and land owner’s information, need to understand each of the plan
standards (the symbol, address plate, sluice valve box, type of fire hydrant, crossing
pipe with wind valve, core block, typical drawing for a communication pipe crossing
a drain and electrofusion connection).
Besides that, I also need to check the conditions ( no curve for two pipes that
meet but are not connected, showing meter sites for temporary supply with
communication pipes for construction work, shows the plan reference number, plan
must be fold into A4 size), check the conditions for the installation of external pipes,
check meter and meter base (the meter base should be outside the fence area, separate
meters for domestic, business, meter base in parallel horizontal position and not in
straight position, the meter must be located in an area without interference, meter
should be installed 0.8m from floor level and minimum 100mm from the wall and
allocate the total number of proposed meters along with the size shown in the plan),
learn about IRMS ( Integrated Revenue Management System) where I have to used
when the approval has been made and I need to insert the important information in
that system.

17
4.2 Maintenance in Pressure Reducing Valve, Meter and Pipe Leakage

Non-revenue water (NRW) is equal to the total amount of water flowing into
the water supply network from a water treatment plant (the ‘System Input Volume’)
minus the total amount of water that industrial and domestic consumers are authorized
to use (‘The Authorized Consumption’). Utility managers should use the water
balance to calculate each component and determine where water losses are occurring,
as described in the next sections. They will then prioritize and implement the required
policy changes and operational practices. NRW components cover the entire water
utility supply system from the water treatment plant outlet meters to the customer
meters, which means that managing NRW is the responsibility of the entire operations
department. When I was been assign at Non Revenue Department for four weeks the
technician there explain to me that this department job scope is wide and more
practical when it comes to inspection and maintenance. This department is established
is because PBAPP want to reduce water loss. Despite the fact that this department
taught me a lot, it also required me to work outside of the office because we had to go
on site visits.
Firstly, their department mostly involved with inspection and maintenance in
pressure reducing valve (PRV), Magflow meter and identify pipe leakage problems.
Checking the meter reading is the first thing a technician must do when they get on
site. From there they will know the problem if the reading is lower than the setting
level. To begin with, when it comes to Pressure Reducing valve, most problem that
always occurs is the pressure is slow. The problem is strainer at the PRV is clogged
with branch, dry leaves or others. Hence, PBA must perform routine maintenance to
keep the precise water level pressure flow that they have set. On the other hand, rust
in the PRV is the reason why PRV pressure is slow, thus PBA must do a flushing
process in which it will remove all the rust that is obstructing the water from flowing
smoothly. Since there are tons of meter in Penang, non revenue department must
identify which pipe is leaks from which zone meter area to district by district meter
area in Penang. However, this department manage to solve the leakage problem by
two different method which is by calculation and graph. To find leaks there are two
method that can be done which is by visual leaks inspection and step test. Although,
for step test the process must be done at night because consumer no longer use water

18
at that time. In addition, there are two types of device use that can help to detect and
find leaks which is by listening stick or ground microphone.

4.3 Inspection and Maintenance in Piping and Valve

For the diversion department, i was assign to work with them for two weeks.
This department handle project that has been assign at PBAPP. Most of the tasks from
this department is it requires me to work both inside and outside of the office. When it
comes to working in the office and dealing with consultants, the job scope of the
diversion department is nearly identical to planning department. The consultants must
show them the pipe planning that they want to relocate and it must be approved by the
diversion department. The majority of the work that the diversion department does
involves inspecting pipes and valves that need to be removed or moved to new
locations. The majority of the work we did was material checking, where I had to
assess the pipe's size in terms of its length, bitumen coating thickness, outer diameter
(OD), thickness of the steel, and thickness of the concrete lining. While for the
inspection of valve, firstly, we have to know the type of valve used. After that, the
type of hydrostatic tests for the hydrostatic body leak test and hydrostatic seat leak
test must then be verified. The duration of the test and the valve pressure, together
with whether or not it is leaking, are two things that need to be recorded. The
descriptions of the valves, which include Nominal Size (DN), Pressure Rating, Body
Materials, Brand of Valve, Arrow to Indicate Direction of Flow (on Valve Body),
Standard Number, Year of Manufacturer, Valve Serial Number, Arrow to Indicate
Direction of Opening or Closing, Rubber Seat Material Identification and Type B
(Gate valve). Then, after doing all of the checklist diversion department must open the
tender, start working on the projects and followed by the claim from the contractors
after the project completed.

19
5.0 SUMMARY

In summary, the internship is a really good program and recommended to any

university students in any field. It helps to enhance and develop my skills, abilities
and knowledge theoretically and practically. Hence, it was a good memory as not only
students can gain experience, but also new friends and knowledge. PBA Pulau Pinang
is also a good place to do internship since it provides numerous benefits and
advantages to the practical trainees. The environment is clean and competitive and it
provide good atmosphere for industrial trainee as it can make them easier to learn.
Thus, the treatment by the company was just equitable and professional. Student have
learned from different departments and people. I am grateful to my industrial
supervisor, Ir. Ts. Siti Fadzilah Binti Mohd Hashim and others technician there. They
also help me to handle some of my weaknesses and provided guidance whenever I’m
in need. It can be conclude that, the 10-week duration for the internship was not
enough to learn more in details about the jobs as there are still a lot of things that
needs be learned. But it is just enough for me to complete this final report with all the
information that acquire. Lastly, i would like to thanks to all of people that involved
in this project.
