4.0 SPECIAL PROJECT

 Shortage of Belian (Eusideroxylon zwageri) hardwood as pepper support post has
constrained sustainable development of pepper cultivation nowadays. Therefore, two
potential alternative supports have been developed namely ceramic pole and brick

11
pole, to assess on possible replacement to the traditionally used post. My special
project was entitled ‘The Analysis on Innovative Pepper Support Post’ which includes
a completely randomized design (CRD), (i) control (P0) – Piper nigrum using Belian
wooden poles as traditional support post, (ii) Ceramic pole (P1) – Piper nigrum using
ceramic pole as support post and (iii) Brick pole (P2) – Piper nigrum using brick pole
as support post. This project was supervised by the Research Officer (RO) of MPB
which are Mr. Kevin and Mr. Chen. It was discovered that there are different
characteristics between these two innovation pepper support post. Overall, ceramic
pole and brick pole could contribute to better growth performance of pepper.

4.1 Introduction
 Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is a climber plant that requires a reliable support for
proper growth, development and yield. Traditionally, wooden pole of Borneo
Ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) or commonly called the Belian tree was used as
support. The Belian poles in expose environment condition are very durable and can
remain undamaged for many years. However, the Belian post acquisition is the most
expensive item in the establishment of a pepper farm apart from being limited in
supply. There is a need to develop alternative post to ensure sustainable development
of pepper industry. The three main considerations for the invention are cost
effectiveness, easy handling and able to promote normal growth for pepper. Two
innovative posts have been developed based on the three considerations, i.e. brick
pole and ceramic pole. The brick pole was constructed via end-to-end joint on the
common red brick that available in market, by using cement as adhesive material for
the joint (Table 1). Whilst, the ceramic pole was constructed with only 2feet in height,
4inch in diameter and thickness of 1cm (Table 1) by considering the logistic constrain
by the weight. However, the ceramic pole was designed in a way that it is extendable.
The two tiny holes at both end of pipe were for the Paper P17 (Pg.32) Presented at
26th Malaysian Society of Plant Physiology Conference, 9-11 Aug 2016
Photosynthetic Performance On Pepper Vine 2 use of extension.

4.2 Objective
This project aims to:
 identify the characteristics of ceramic and brick pole as a potential support post

12
 determine the differences between ceramics and brick pole
 select the best potential pepper plant pole support to replace the traditional Belian
wooden pole

4.3 Materials
The observation was a field study and conducted in a 10m x 10m plot located in
Kampung Karu, Padawan, Sarawak which owns by Mr. Wan Ambi. The crop involved
in this study was Piper nigrum variety, Semongok Aman. In this study, two types of
innovative posts were designed, specification as described in Table 1. Belian wooden
poles were used as a control for the observation. The plot has been established in March
2015.

5.0 BENEFITS GAINED FROM INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

During the 22 weeks of training at Malaysian Pepper Board, Kuching. I got many
experiences as various advantages that can be upgraded in the field. I can learn a variety of
knowledge about the work involved in government agency either at the site of the crop and
the office. Besides, I can use my knowledge in university and applied in this agency. I also
can use my critical thinking to learn new knowledge and improve the quality inside of crops
science, especially in the area of pepper farm.

19
Another benefit that I had gained is working experience. This industrial training gave me
the opportunity to explore the world of working. Before this I never had a chance to work in
an agency or a company. Despite to wake up early in the morning and make sure that I must
arrived early at the office, it is still good thing for me because I can learn how to manage my
time wisely.

Furthermore, from this training, I had a chance to improve my communication skills. In

an organization, there is different level of position. I need to make sure that I used a suitable
title for every staff. With this communication skill, I can easily communicate with other staff
and even with the general worker at the field. All the information, knowledge, and even
orders by the staff and general workers are can be easily understand and learned.

At Malaysian Pepper Board department I had learn more about agriculture. Different
from the class there is more theory rather than practical. Such as the processing of white
pepper, I admit that I had learned about it but due to many amount of student in the class, I
can hardly understand about it. But during this training, I had the opportunity to visit the
pepper processing factory and learn the process.

Finally, I am feeling lucky that I had this opportunity to do my industrial training at

Malaysian Pepper Board department. This is because at Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB), I
had gained new knowledge about the innovation pepper pole support system. I rarely heard
about these three pole support system which are ceramic pole, PVC pole and brick pole. Only
at MPB, I learn about these pepper pole support system.

6. 0 SUGGESTION

I appreciated the time and opportunity that Malaysian Pepper Board, Kuching given
to us as a student during the internship period is concerned, however there is a need to give a
review in ways which internship is handles and address some of the challenges and problems
faced by both the university and the organization.

20
Based on the experiences and views, which are conducted for 22 weeks in the training
industry, there are some suggestions that may be granted to me to share in order to improve
the system and existing equipment.
University
1. The university should help students to find more agencies that will give some
financial support to students, or at least an accommodation as to lighten students’
burden on financial.

Agency
1. Provide accommodation for internship students who are coming from far away.
2. Give some allowances to interns students to reduce their abundant.
3. Can prepare more activity in every section for the intern student for their weekly
activity.

7.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there were many things that I have experience and learned during my
22 weeks of industrial training at Malaysian Pepper Board, Kuching. The whole training
period was very interesting and unforgettable experience. Through this training I was able to

21
gain new insight and more comprehensive understanding about the real working condition
and practice.
In addition, I also had the opportunity to apply the knowledge that I learned from
university to be applied in place of these agencies. The past months of my internship have
been very instructive for me. A lot of the tasks and activities that I have worked during my
internship are familiar with what I’m studying at the moment. The area that I found most
interesting is Agriculture. There is a big difference in the school projects and the tasks and
activities during the actual work. In school we learn how to describe the work in projects,
where in work you learn how to implement them in reality. This internship was definitely an
introduction to the actual work field for me. I have learned to work in an agriculture
organization and apply my knowledge into practice.
Furthermore, Malaysian Pepper Board Kuching is the most suitable place to do
industrial training. Besides, it also provides knowledge and skills, especially in the job field.
There also have friendly staff and helpful workers, whom we can interact with, share
information, and are easy to get new knowledge from them. Based on what I have undergone,
I am 100% agree that the industrial training program have achieve the entire primary
objective. It is also the best way to prepare student in facing the real working life.
