1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO STUDENT SIIP PROGRAM

University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) established in 1997 carrying objectives of

developing graduates that have phenomenal qualities and corresponding ability. UTP
wanted to produce graduates not only excel in technical area but also having qualities
traits such as critical thinking, communication skill, business insight, softs skills and
practical aptitude.

Furthermore, to achieve the objective UTP had required student to undergo to

undergo Student Industrial Program (SIIP) during bachelor degree program with a
total of eight month training. The program has been conduct in between third year
and final year of study. SIIP been divided in two phase :

Student Industrial Training (May 2019 – August 2019)

- Student required undergoing four month or 14 weeks of training in the
host company where at the end of the week fourteen, they need to submit
an Industrial Training Report to their UTP supervisor respectively.

Student Industrial Project (September 2019 – December 2019)

- Student required getting involved in the host company real industrial
project. This second part of the SIIP requires 14 weeks of real
involvement with the host company project. At the end of the 14 weeks of
SIIP second part student should submit an Industrial Project Report.

In conjunction with this program, UTP also intend that student can relate theoretical
knowledge studied during lecture with its application in industry. By this program,
student should develop skills in safety practices, communication, work ethics and
management in industrial point of view.

1
Objective of Student Industrial Training
 Gain new skills and knowledge
In a developing world, graduate should acquire new skills, experience and
knowledge as per industrial practice. Communication skills, management and
leadership skills are among the skills that been a demand in each company
and it can be obtain only by experience hence industrial training is a suitable
way since student will be communicating and dealing with staffs and other
employees throughout the internship period.
 relate and apply theories with industrial practices
During SIIP, student should be able to relate practical implementation with
theories and fact they learn in class. This is to enhance student knowledge
and understanding hence student will be more comprehend about the
relationship of applying theories in real working environment.
 Expose student to potential employer
Internship is a good platform for student to decide on their future path.
Student that had undergone internship period will be taking their final year
for the bachelor degree program and they will be deciding the major course
for their further study. Hence, internship is a good opportunity for them to
find their potential interest in the industry.

The learning outcome of Student Industrial Training (SIT):

1.1.1 To demonstrate skills in communication, management, and teamwork.
1.1.2 To adopt ethic, professionalism and HSE practices in work culture.
1.1.3 To demonstrate continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout the
training.
1.1.4 Appreciate the sustainability issue in industry

Work culture often refers to the beliefs, attitudes and the way of contributing back to
the employees that act as a mainstay for a company. It can heavily be influenced by
the principles and overall outlooks of the organisation in achieving goals and
objectives. A healthy and motivated work culture plays an important role to sustain
effective employee development which is vital for employee competency of work
performances and establishing the sense of belonging and loyalty to the company.
Moreover, having a strong work culture mean employees follow the organization
rules and regulations and adhere to the existing guidelines. To ensure healthy work
culture, occupational health and safety and working ethic plays a big role to carry
such beliefs and attitude towards a company.

17
2.1 Occupational Health & Safety

2.3 Work Environment

A healthy work place environment is ideal when it comes to maintaining a positive

outcome in a stressful atmosphere. The most important thing that influences
employee motivation and happiness, productivity and efficiency is their working
environment. The job environment underlined the significance of favourable job
setting for producing productivity on all MIE staff activities. According to Quality
Manual System (QMS) there are no special or specific environment required for
Maju Integrated Engineers Sdn. Bhd. Moreover, MIESB environment runs 100%
office based. In order to provide comfortable and productive environment, MIESB
has provide building, workspace and associated facilities including office facility
with good lighting, air conditioned environment, telephone, fax machine, computers
and proper file storage with identification. The most important criteria are safe
working environment within the area. There are two thing that affecting the work
environment which is Teamwork and Work Ethics.

22
2.3.1Teamwork

Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to

complete a task in the most effective and efficient way. Teamwork provides an
ambient that support friendship and loyalty among employees. This culture
encourage employee to have trust among employees in order to overcome challenges
together towards achieving MIESB vision, mission and objectives.

Engineering Department of Maju Integrated Engineers Sdn. Bhd. Consists of three

(3) subsection which area : Civil & Structure, Mechanical & Electrical and Process.
All these department must work together in order to maintain the quality of a
structure as required by customer. Hence, a broad diversity in thought, perspective
and suggestions are said by different niche areas of expertise to come up with the
very best solution for engineering critical problem. The medium of sharing or
throwing out opinion mostly been done in formally meetings and un-formally
anywhere in the office or discussion. From my perspective, these show how effective
teamwork is making the job done easier and a lot quicker. It also helps to solve
problems that may appear during designing and construction. The effort between
each department had increase the quality of the output by having quick feedback and
multiple expert skills with deep knowledge which make MIESB asset more integrity.

The teamwork in engineering department can be portrays by giving an example. For

Civil & Structure, the Design Engineer will prepare all necessary design calculations
and sketches required from size of beam until reinforcement of structure to enable
Draughtsmen (Drafter) to prepare fabrication drawings. Detailing of drawing can be
done by engineer and draughtsmen can also design the reinforcement. Every single
project is unique and it had a start and an end, for client consultant need to finish
their work within the time limit and it can be done if draughtsmen and engineer do
both chores individually. However, each person had their own duty which required
detail calculation. By dividing the jobs it can reduce and complete the work faster
with less mistake and flaws. Knowledge on both areas allows them to discuss the
mistake done unconsciously hence it improvised the quality of work produce and
completed the task within the minimal time.

23
In addition, in every team exists a leader who guides them in achieving company
goals and personal goals. A good leadership skills and management skills is crucial
in order to ensure a project successful or a disaster. Moreover, a leader must be able
to monitor, supervise and control their subordinate. In conclusion, the result of this
teamwork between inter-department in MIESB will result in a working environment
based on trust, respect and collaboration between employees, which has a strong
team culture.

2.3.2 Work Ethics

Workplace ethics are nothing but the rules and procedure that should be followed or
carried out in an office by every person not only employee but also employer to
ensure a professional company culture and to build a better relationship with their
customer. A good work ethics can be established by knowing what the company
current goal setting is. Ethics play an important role to ensure the integrity of the
employees when work is deployed. MIESB has developed a guideline namely MIE
Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy for employee to follow in order to produce a free
corruption company with zero unethical issues. It is clearly mentioned that MIESB
employees are strictly prohibited from soliciting, or accepting any kind or bribery
directly or indirectly which leads to corruption.

MIESB Management is committed to conduct business in a manner that whoever we

may deal with, and wherever we may operate, we are committed to doing so
lawfully, ethically and with integrity. As part of this commitment, all forms of
bribery and corruption are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. This include
obtaining aby special discounts, rebates, commission, interest, service or any other
benefits. MIESB must not, and must ensure that any third party acting on our behalf
does not, act corruptly in our dealings with any other person. This anti-bribery and
corruption policy sets out Informa’s policies to prevent any acts of bribery and
corruption. The policy has been designed to comply with legislation governing
bribery and corruption on a global basis. The Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy is
fully supported by Management of MIESB to ensure that the organization carry out
the common sense and good business practices that we all work to in any event.

24
Moreover, MIESB also highlighted the Alcohol, Drug and Carry Weapon Policy.
This policy is to produce a safe, healthy and productive workplace. The effects of
drug and alcohol on job have far reaching impact on the profitability of a business.
When a person is impaired, it can reduced the efficiency and productivity of worker.
And if at high risk environment the employees might be at risk of injury or killed on
the job. Weapon in the office only cause harm and insecurity to employee as every
one of them might be a target in any occasion. Hence, Worksite under control
MIESB shall be free of alcohol, drugs, and weapon and banned substances. The
misuse of legitimate drugs, alcohol and carry weapon or the use or possession of
banned or controlled drugs on company premises, is strictly prohibited. However in
certain circumstances health issues might lead to use of banned substance thus any
employee taking prescribed drugs shall notify the company physician or medic to
verify if he can work whilst under the influence of such medication. MIESB had
reserves the right to conduct searches or perform tests to determine the presence of
alcohol or drugs or carry weapon and employees who refuse to submit to alcohol and
drug testing may be subject to disciplinary action which may lead to termination of
employment.

3.0 WORK EXPERIENCE

Work experience is any experience that we a person gain while working in a specific
field or occupation. Student Industrial Training (SIT) had been done at Maju
Integrated Engineers (MIE) under Engineering Department under Civil & Structure.
In the past four (4) months, a lot of new thing I had gained and grabbed which will
be discuss in-depth by the following two subsection which are skills gained and
knowledge acquire.

3.1 SKILLS GAINED

Four month of SIT at MIE had thought me well as I profoundly grateful as I

managed to grab several thing that I find may be essential for my future undertakes.
This SIT program thought me some essential skills in which will be discussed in the
following section which been classified in communication skills and time
management.

25
3.1.1COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication skills are the ability to convey information to another effectively and
efficiently. Communication skills are highly indispensable when it involved to
working in a team or organisation. Every communication involved at least one
sender, one message and a recipient. A simple yet complex message can be found. A
good communication need to be developed so a good conversation can be done with
one another according and to the level of hierarchy and a proper type of
communication. Communication skills can be divided into three parts, verbal
communication, non-verbal communication and written communication it will be
discuss in-depth.

3.1.1.1 Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is the most essential part when it comes to work in team. An
appropriate and effective communication is the key amongst higher management,
employees and clients for respect to be transferred during mutual conversation. Not
all people can laugh or telling inside humour like a good friend usually do at the first
meet. A border line must be set between mutual friendship and professional
conversation for the case of workplace setting especially for being an employee in a
company where an age gap introduced. Verbal communication is another soft skill
that portrays professionalism and a message can be conveyed by one another.
Throughout this SIT, I’ve had lots of experience to control my language and
intonation when talking to my superior and older people in the company.

In MIE, there are two groups to a verbal communication. First group is a group
where I can talk freely. This group consist of the engineer where they are a bit open
and throw the gap. They threw the gap as they did not want any birder between
trainee and inspector. They make us feel welcomed and have a sense of belonging.
For this group, communication skill that I can utter is like talking to friend. However,
there’s even a border line for me so that I won’t lose my word towards them. An age
gap should be taken considerably careful as we must pay respect to the senior of our
age and the experience they felt for the past years.

The next group is where professionalism in communication is acquired. For this level
of communication, words and language must be taken care carefully arrange and

26
comprehend with hope the desired message is able to convey. This may apply to my
Head of Department (HOD), General Manager or even to the boss. My HOD would
likely to pay a visit whenever he’s in the office. Thus I need to think meticulously or
carefully before I utter my word. However, what I learned is I may put a laughter
during the conversation but do not be offended by the response. This type of
communication must not be taken seriously as they also wanted a friendly
atmosphere yet a fine borderline must be set and talk professionally.

In verbal communication, listening skills must always be implemented for a better

two-way conversation. Without taking the time to really listen and be a good listener
it may be difficult. The words uttered were not sound very clear or it sounded
mumble without with improper pronunciation that may leads to misunderstanding
and it shows a bad conversation between two parties. As for me, task given to me
been said clearly and it was not problem however sometimes after been drained
attending by meeting by meeting yet he wanted to deliver me a task. Hence, listening
is important and it referred to paying attention when someone is talking. When the
task given had confusion asking question is important during conversation to ensure
that one is totally understand of what being conveyed.

3.1.1.2 Non-Verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication is the non-linguistic transmission of information through

body language or facial expressions that appeared involuntarily. This non-verbal
communication is highly unavoidable in working environment as it always comes
with verbal communication. This communication skills usually emphasis and
portrays how seriousness and strengthen the point taken out by a speaker. It is crucial
as sometimes people act with emotion and overly reacted and that may cause
annoyance to some listener.

3.1.1.3 Written Communication

Written communication is also an essential skill with other type of communications.

Written communication involves in any type of interaction that makes use of written
word. Written communication refers to the process of conveying a message through
written symbols. Written communication usually executed in form of printed
message. For example, email, text message, manuals, standard of procedure,

27
technical standard, training manuals, policies or a short memo in a printed form or
non-printed form of written communications. In working environment, written
communication must be profoundly high manner and show professionalism. Formal
written communication shows great respect and professionality in an organisation.
As for me, I did an email to my supervisor and Human Resource Department
regarding the SIT UTP supervisor visit to MIE. Outside business hour we can talk
like a friend. However, when it comes to emailing, a formal and professional email is
the format of the email. This is an important as it may shows integrity of oneself and
the act of respect when it comes to authority towards the superior.

Lateral movement is used for communication within employees of the similar level
in the hierarchy of an organisational chart. This includes the communication between
staff in the departments which usually conducted informally. As of work term, it may
use in informal sound during teaching or discussion process. In term of upward flow,
which is the higher rank in hierarchy level it can be done informally or formally.
However, the most important part is the message can be conveyed from one another
while maintaining respect to other parties’ even different type of communication
used.

3.1.2 TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of

time spent on specific activities. Time management is an essential skill that is needed
to possess by everyone when it comes to task completion. Compare to my time
management skills in UTP during my study, I had been involved in several event in
UTP. Little basic time management skills had been learn due to the overloading
assignment and back to back class. As a student I need to proactively complete my
assignment, project and group task and in the mean time I need to actively get
involved in those events. Yet, I fail to complete certain task within the time limit
hence showing my bad time management skills as I often send the work late, skipped
meal and sleeping time to finish the task given.

When working in a company, it is vital for every employee to complete all the task
given within time limit or everyone in the company will face with the consequences.
It is also important for to keep up with the work pace and adapting to the work
culture to ensure maximum efficiency available to minimise flaws. Competitors

28
around the world have become the driving force for everyone to strive their best. In
MIE, I have noticed that planning and scheduling is important so that the work can
be completed on time or even earlier. They work smart by getting more work done in
lesser than planned as sometime client might change the design and it required time
to redesign.

Punctuality is important and must be put as a high priority. Punctuality is a sign of

professionalism and helps you stand out as a reliable and trustworthy employee. If
you don't get your part of a project completed on time, you keep others from being
able to finish their tasks. Being punctual helps you establish your reputation as a
dependable and consistent worker. However, there is a stigma stated that “Malays are
always late”. MIESB is a company own by Malays hence we need to break the
stigma and proof that is wrongly portrayed. In respect to others’ time is highly
essential to avoid losing precious time during working hours and allow for more task
can be completed in a day. Hence, in order to break the stigma and keeping UTP
reputation, I am trying my best to be punctual in attending to office, gathering and
learn as much as I could.

3.2 KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED

In these four months of SIT, I do acquire knowledge that may be helpful to prep
myself in working in consultancy area. I find it is essential for me to gained new
knowledges as learning is a never-ending process. For this section, I divided the
knowledge I gained in two sections which are understanding job requirement, and
completing task given on time.

3.2.1 Understanding Job Requirement

Working at MIE does really open my eyes about how big the differences between
what I have learnt in class session and what I am going to practice and applied. “The
job requirements are the specific skills, types and amount of works experiences,
personal qualities, educational credentials, professional certifications and broad area
of knowledges,” stated by Doyle, 2017. It is essential to have extra knowledges
comply with the higher understanding and effort in order to complete the tasks given
by the engineers. Thus, in my opinion, I need to read, learn and do some researches
in order to gain the mutual understandings about the tasks that had have given to me.

29
Either it is related or otherwise with the basic knowledge as a civil engineering
student, I do believe that this opportunity to do at MIE is also a learning process for
me. As trainee under civil and structure I must familiarised with the designing of
each structure element.

The forte of my host department is civil and structure. Therefore, any task been given
to me required full understanding of technical and theoretical knowledge on this
matter. I need to revise back everything that had been learn including several new
knowledge which not been introduce when studying. The actions taken to attain me
to read on stories of the functions of each element. I also need to understand to read
drawing such as architecture drawing and structural drawing. This drawing give me
better understanding on element attached to each structure and the continuity from
floor to floor of each structure.

Among the knowledge I have gained was mostly the British Standard method. In
MIE the method use to design the structure element was British Standard (BS)
instead of EUROCODE method been taught during my study. I was given the
chances to learn more on BS method including the designing of steel structure using
BS method. In advance, I was given a task to design the reinforcement of a one
storey warehouse with a mezzanine floor for my understanding. With the
fundamental knowledge of BS method it help me to understand more regarding
designing of the structure.

As a civil engineering student, this I believe that introduction to this method is also a
learning process for me to acquire as most of company around the world been using
BS which is the most common method been use.

3.2.2 Completing task given on time

I have acknowledged that every task that have been given must be perfectly complete
really shows the attitude and the professionalisms of the working individuals. I am
responsible enough to ensure that I need to take the tasks given seriously because
being a professional worker is one of my main and ultimate goals in the future.
Moreover, I need to have a proper time management and prior the tasks given based
on their priority as different tasks have their own different urgencies. Therefore, I can
make an improvement in completing my tasks in efficient ways before the deadline.

30
Task given came with final deadline for submission. By doing so I was able to be
more discipline in completing my task by prioritising my work according to the level
of importance. This whole internship experience is a learning process for me to be a
better person. I learned that we need to be prepare to make mistakes and accept
criticism either in a polite manner or sarcastically as we learn best from mistake.
However, even we rushing our work till the deadline, it is important to pay a lot of
attention to the required task’s detail in order to avoid careless mistakes hence
complete the given job efficiently and effectively.

3.3 APPLICATION

I believe that I have been given a great opportunity to do my training in MIE under
Civil and structural department where fundamental knowledge of designing can be
applied throughout this four month of training. It is with the basic knowledge of
reinforced concrete structure and steel structure that I learned way back during my
third year under Steel Structure by Dr Ehsan.

In this course, the fundamental reasoning on why we must learn steel structure is to
understand wholly on the designing of structure, properties and sizing of steel use.
Steel structure design provide engineer with the knowledge required to select suitable
size of structural element based on the properties of the steel which is the web
thickness, flange thickness, depth of section, width of section, root radius, depth
between fillets, ratio for local web buckling, ratio for local flange buckling, second
moment of area, radius of gyration, elastic modulus, plastic modulus, buckling
parameter, torsional index, warping constant, torsional constant and area of section.
Throughout this training, the designing under the same course also being exposed
and refreshed again as almost of the steel structure but in different method which is
the BS method. As shown below is the example of calculation use for designing of
beam structure using British Standard method :

31
32
33
Moreover, MIE also covered in the course of Reinforced Concrete Structure taught
during my third year by Dr Ir. Mubarak. In MIE, I do have the fundamental of
concrete reinforcement happen prior to the course. Based on the course, I can relate
the reinforcement design with the designing of concrete structure thought with
different method. It is almost the same as Eurocode but not as detail as Eurocode
method. During study, I been taught on how to design rectangular beam based on the
type of support, geometry of beam, shape of the beam cross section, equilibrium
conditions and material use. Furthermore, slab had the same design based as the
beam. As for column I also been introduce to rectangular column which design
based on the shape of cross section, material of structure, type of loading,
slenderness ratio and the type of lateral reinforcement. In this department to my
surprise that all the fundamental being thought are used and I learned that there are

34
more type of beam, column and slab that been use in common structure which is
circular beam, circular column, beam with web opening, waffle slab and many more.

Taking in account, there are a lot more course and certain topic that touched and
applied when I am doing my training in civil and structure, MIE. The courses are the
main and major courses that I learned that helps me in understanding the actual cases
in a real life structure rather than the ideal state or model state. The model state that
been taught during lecture is an easy model for student to understand the
fundamental knowledge of engineering related cases. Hence, the basic fundamental
knowledge must be learn and take a high precedence in the matter of grasping a
whole overview.

4.0 DISCUSSION ON SUSTAINABILITY IN HOST COMPANY

Sustainability is literally defined as an ability of a group to continue their cultures

and behaviours indefinitely without sacrifices future generation to meet certain goals
and objectives. In simpler word, sustainability is the ability to maintain and sustain
something endlessly. Sustainability can be divided into environmental, economic and
social sustainability. The process or the act to continue achieving target without harm
the future generations is called Sustainability Development. Since its establishment,
MIESB had changes gradually to cope with the change of industry. Increasement of
client and project in the industry had become more challenging for them. In a well
developing country, an organization must not be static and need move forward
following the flow of the economy. An organization must have the courage to move
out of their comfort zone and face the challenges to ensure their survival in this
developing world.

35
4.1 COMMON PRACTICE AND FUTURE RECOMMENDATION

“Engineers are increasingly required to play a leadership role in sustainable

development, overcoming global challenges, such as depletion of resources,
environmental pollution, rapid population growth and damage to ecosystems” (Dr
Asad Sarwar Qureshi and Atif Nawab). Based on the sentence it was due to the
engineering achievement that had been developed without considering the impact on
environmental natural system, social and economic. Sustainability encompasses
MIESB and its firm carrying out the business core in socially responsible and
integrated manner. The aims are to create social benefits, minimise disruption to
livelihood, efficiently use energy, water and any other resources, and to safeguard the
health and safety of the employees, contractor and local communities. Even though
most of the sustainability practice were not cheap and not cost optimise, its worth to
spend when having to compensate for the cost lost due to any type of hazard.

4.1.1 Environmental

MIESB is a diverse organization which involves in oil and gas, construction and
mechanical and electrical. All the operation produce waste in term of non-harmful
waste which is paper waste. In todays electronic age, people had been reconsidering
to going paperless. However, there’s still a long way to go before we can achieve our
dream as paper is a very important human product that help to ease our daily routine.
Paper is still everywhere from newspaper to food wrap and most of them ending up
in the landfills creating a huge amount of paper waste. And little do we know, 50%
of the waste of businesses is composed of paper. It is a tremendous amount of waste
produce by paper and paper is the third largest industrial polluter of air, water and
soil and if not been treated properly it will affect the flora and fauna of the local
communities.

MIE is very committed in managing their waste to ensure minimization of waste can
be done to the maximum. Method use by MIE is adopting the 3R Principle – Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. MIE had been using quite a huge amount of paper for tender
submission, drawing evaluation, documentation to simple engineering calculation.
This required paper to be use as a medium to present the outcome. MIE had been
reducing the amount of paper use by saving data in their own database which can be
accessed by each computer within the company link. MIE also been reusing the old

36
paper for other occasion. This method had been reduced the amount of paper use to
transfer information to each other. Hence, it can reduce paper pollution. Moreover,
reusing paper is an alternative done by MIE to reduce paper waste. For example,
MIE had been using the same paper to print documents that don’t end up in a file
drawer as the unnecessary side will be slashing to avoid confusion. MIE also been
recycling the paper that had been used to the maximum. However, it would likely to
have a combination of sensitive document that require secure, commercial shredding.
When you use less paper, less tree will be cut down as a ton of papers requires 24
trees to cut down and to make a piece of paper consume five (5) gallon of water
which cause more waste. By implying this 3R method, pollution can be reduce,
landfills space, water and energy consumption, greenhouse gases can be minimize
and most importantly resources can be preserves.

4.1.2 Economical

In terms of economical aspect, MIESB is one of the contributor to Malaysian

government money as MIESB had been consultant for various company and the most
is Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS). As we know PETRONAS is one of the
biggest contributors to the Malaysian government as a fraction of the dividend and
royalty of the oil and gas production. Hence, MIE had recognised various methods to
upsurge their name in this developing country alongside with leading company.
Action and steps taken to achieve economical sustainability is cost optimisation. The
company focus on element of optimising designing of structure to reduce cost. Thus,
the company focus on the element of hiring competent person for the correct position
who is highly excellent in technical proficiency and knowledges. Moreover, the
quality of management also determines the firm dependability. The action taken to
must improvise and in the same time maintain the standard quality of work process
to maintain client. Thus, civil and structure department play an important role on
ensuring the design must be optimised at it utmost quality to produce an on-spec
product as per demand as we know building of structure is the most expensive in
compare to others as it require a lot of money for the bidding, designing, constructing
and labour.

37
4.1.3 Political and Cultural Dimensions

MIESB is an organization that comprise of a multi-racial who are cooperating in one

association. To accomplish the objective which ought to be maintained by the
employees, it is essential for them to greet each other even differs in culture, race,
language and religion and convictions. In this organization social boundary does not
existed as in a small company everyone frequently meet each other. Races and ethnic
never have been a reason for the employees to have a solid regard and
acknowledgement towards the distinction of general population. MIESB maintain its
sustainability in society development of highly skilled and competent workforce
through education and learning. Targets audience is the younger generations which
will be the future engineers that uphold the MIESB. Investing in their training
program is a contribution towards the development of young minds.

Moreover the company also practice a gathering time for the employees as work can
be very stressful for the employees. Once in a while, MIESB had done happy hour
for the employees to have fun. The happy hour is when celebrating employee
birthday, company anniversary celebration and sometime dinner are the effort done
to produce harmony and healthy environment in the organization while keeping the
employees happy.

38
5.0 CONCLUSION

Nowadays, Student Industrial Training (SIT) is becoming an essential for every new
learner in order to fulfil the demands of some companies as the evolution of
technologies that are occurring day by day. It is a very excellent platform for the
interns to experience both technical and non-technical knowledge and skills for the
real-life application for the future purposes. SIT gives the interns a golden
opportunity to learn and experience some new knowledges and experiences that may
not being taught during the class session. Advantages that interns may obtain through
SIT are working with the community which includes the professionals, experiencing
the taste of working in a company, observing and managing the tasks that are needed
to be fulfilled and alleviate the technical, interpersonal and communication skills in
every aspect in a professional way.

Prior to start my internship period, some courses that I have learnt in UTP help me a
lot as a fundamental knowledge in a theoretical way. Basically, by learning the
theories only are not enough to gain the experiences as there are usually typical ideal
cases with no flaws and least likely related to issues that have been faced by the
employees. Thus, practical and theoretical do complement each other in order to gain
a complete experience for the students. On the other hand, my teamwork and
communication skills are enhanced due to the exposure of different cultural and
educational background colleagues from all age and race.

Moreover, I had also been given the occasion to experience different job scopes but
still under Civil. I do expose myself to learn as many knowledge as I can during this
14-weeksof training. I had been able to apply and expand the knowledge while
gaining new knowledge. This program has been an indicator for me to measure my
full potential, professionalism, leadership and soft skills. Moreover, by having the
same routine everyday allowed me to manage my time better compare to during
study. I become better in managing time and prioritising works to the deadline.

Last but not least, I humbly feel praised and grateful because of the opportunities that
have been given for me by University Technology Petronas (UTP) and Maju
Enterprise Engineering (MIE) to experience Student Industrial Training with flying
colour.
