This week my partner, Makenna, and I have been working on our pitch video and our posters
that we are going to post around to spread awareness on children who are not able to afford
school supplies. We have decided to run donation drives and set up donation bins for people to
donate clean, new, or barely used school supplies. We have decided that the school supplies
can be old, but they need to be in good, usable condition. We will not be giving any broken
materials to those children, and we will not be giving them any fully used materials either. we
will discard them and only donate the usable supplies.

A couple days ago, my partner, Makenna, and I looked up some people to interview that would
be willing to help us on our journey to get children the supplies that they need. We have found
people from the school Makenna’s mom works at and with the help of Ms. Nourrie, we found
someone who works for the DOE that has experienced a lot of situations where students aren’t
able to afford some school supplies. We are looking ahead and trying to plan different ways
that we can contact people with the experiences of meeting parents and children who aren’t
able to afford school supplies. We are currently setting up the meetings to talk about different
ways we can help students that are less fortunate.

This week my partner and I passed out flyers to Ms. Wong and asked Key Club if we could set
up a donation bin for Key Club members to participate in and get service hours. This week for
my research log, I found a ted talk to listen to and created my log. The woman in the ted talk
was an African American woman who talked about her own experiences during school not only
by the lack of access to school supplies but also how she had to take an hour-long bus ride to
get a good education. She also mentioned that she felt that even her people should have access
to good education that’s near where they live.

This week I used an already recorded documentary to contribute to my research and logged
down some important information for my research. In this documentary, the speaker
mentioned that if students weren’t able to acquire the necessary school supplies, they would
be in trouble. I think that this meant that they would not be able to keep up with other
students and that they would be less motivated during school because they can’t keep up. The
speaker also mentions that students who aren’t able to afford the necessary school supplies
have an obvious lower self-esteem than other students that are able to afford the necessary
school supplies. This week we spread more awareness and gave our more flyers. We also
checked up on the Key Club donation bin and found some things

For this week, we found some difficulties and challenges within our project because there is
another group doing the same solutionary project as Makenna and I so we have to split the
materials that the Key Club members donated with another group. So, the materials that we
had acquired had to be given to the other group. This was a challenging week because the
materials that we were hoping to acquire is now split in half. But for my research this week I
had to look at a magazine article. It talked about how adults who are not as smart are a
reflection of the fact that they weren’t able to experience the full good education experience.

In this week’s research article, I looked at someone else’s research paper on my topic. If you
look at my research log 6, you will read that this man had traveled to another part of the world
and observed the status there and compared it to the United States. This week Makenna and I
checked the donation bin and there wasn’t that much but then even less because we had to
split it again with that same group. This is a challenge because there aren’t really many
donations to begin with and splitting it meant that we needed to get more materials on our
own. We have decided to give all the donations to a class at a school that Makenna’s mom
works at.

This week I looked at an online book source. This was a challenging one to add to my research
logs because there really aren’t much online book sources that are based on our topic of how
some students cannot afford school supplies. I finally found one, but it’s mostly like a written-
out interview where questions are asked, and their answers are jotted down and recorded. This
week there wasn’t really a change in the amount of donation supplies that we acquired. Plus,
we have to split it as you already know.

This week’s research log was the last one that I need to record and do for the project. I looked
at a recorded interview. There were two teachers who talked about how they were the ones to
provide for their students if they weren’t able to afford necessary school supplies. This is
something that was important for me to log because I haven’t recorded or logged something
from a teacher’s experience. Besides the interviews that talked about their personal
experiences. This has been a fun journey doing something to try to contribute to the
community. Thanks for following along!
