MATERIALS SUITABLE FOR CONSTRUCTION

1. Subgrade

Thikness of Subgrade :

The top 500 mm of the prepared foundation layer immediately below the pavement, designated as
subgrade, can be made up of in-situ material, select soil, or stabilized soil forming the foundation for the
pavement.
Strength of Subgrade :

It should be well compacted to derive optimal strength and to limit the rutting caused due to additional
densification of the layer during the service life. It shall be compacted to attain a minimum of 97 per cent
of the laboratory maximum dry density obtained corresponding to heavy compaction as per IS:2720 Part-
8 [17] for Expressways, National Highways, State Highways.
Material Used in Subgrade :

The materials used in subgrades, earthen shoulders and miscellaneous backfills shall be soil, moorum,
gravel, a mixture of these or any other material approved by the Engineer. Such materials shall be free of
logs, stumps, mots, rubbish or any other ingredient likely to deteriorate or affect the stability of the
ankment subgrade.
