1. INTRODUCTION

 BFRP bars are the reinforcement bars made from basalt rock which can be
widely used in construction sector. Due its main property of corrosion
resistance it has many advantages over the conventional steel bars.

 Basalt is a natural inorganic material that is found in volcanic rocks originating

from frozen lava, with a melting temperature between 1500°C and 1700°C. The
molten rocks are then extruded through small nozzles to produce continuous
filaments of basalt fiber.

 Further bars are manufactured using these filaments in a process called

pultrusion.

Formation of basalt bars

Most FRP rebar is made using the pultrusion process.

Pultrusion is continuous manufacturing process of pulling composite materials with

constant cross-section through a die to wet fibers typically using vinyl-ester or polyester
resins.

Neuvokas worked out its own pultrusion process and Kiilunen adds that they preferred to
use epoxy resin because of its advantageous properties. In the Neuvokas process basalt
fibers are “wetted” with epoxy resin and then bars are shaped and compacted. The cost to
produce FRP is very dependent on the manufacturing process speed and the ability to
increase output speeds will yield significant cost savings. Kiilunen says the Neuvokas
manufacturing method has been developed to produce rebar over ten times faster than the
typical pultrusion process and he thinks they will be able to increase this speed
significantly in the future.

2. AIM AND OBJECTIVE

Aim:
To use reinforcement bars made from basalt rock fibers in place of steel and
other reinforcement fibers in aggressive, marine and corrosive
environment.

Objective:
To study the tensile strength, toughness and other engineering properties of
the BFRP Bars in comparison with the conventional steel bars.

4. RESEARCH GAP

 Bonding of the BFRP bars with concrete have been studied and a satisfactory outcome
have also arrived about the bond strength

But the tensile characteristics and the strees-strain behaviour study is not done at
satisfactory level.

Thus, this gap in the research work has to be overcomed by performing tests and
studying the outcomes/results.

Hence, creating and providing a useful data about the strengths of BFRP bars is the
objective of this project work.

8. FUTURE SCOPE

 This study will help in designing the members reinforced with BFRP bars in the
construction were the corrosion factor is of concern e.g. Sewers and drainage lines,
coastal and marine area constructions, swimming tanks and underground water
reaaining structures, etc.

 This work would prove effective and a efficient evidence that the Basalt Fiber
Reinforcements Bars will provide good strength when used as reinforcement in
structure were accelerative environments prevail and thus can be included in the design
specifications and Indian standards .
