indicated on the syllabus) and will be emailed to me by Monday
March 22nd by or before 7 pm.

Keep a copy of your email showing the date and time you emailed it
to me and the attachment.

Make sure you have added your cell phone number on the banner
before you send me the mid term. Also ADD your cell phone on your
paper as I may need to contact you if something is not clear in your
exam.

PART I:
Brief questions about theatre, acting, architecture, audiences

(see separate attachment, “Wickham notes)”

Part I will consist of brief questions and answers that have to do with acting,
architecture, and audiences.

PART II: PLAYS

Part II will consist of

five out of six textual analysis questions in five essays, 250 to 350 words each. Double
spaced, 12 font, normal margins! Excellent editing—grammar and spelling errors will take
away points from your grade.

Total number of words in your document should be between 1250 to 1750

words.

If you run out of word limit use ellipses but in a way that shows clearly the
meaning of the words you are quoting.

Eg: . It may be as you say, sir; but your poor father made the old plan
do, and died, they say, rich. He was always well satisfied with the
profits our industry brought him, he lived cheerful himself and made
others so;

1
Good:“ . It may be as you say, sir; but your poor father made the old
plan do, and died, … rich. …… he lived cheerful himself and made
others so;

Bad: . It may be …he lived cheerful himself and made others so ;

1. Because this is a take home essay exam, your responses must be well edited (at least two
drafts!). Make sure you have checked for grammar, syntax, spelling. If you don’t have a
printer you can edit on the screen. If you have technical difficulties at the last minute (eg.,
computer breaking down) prepare a clear handwritten exam and take clear photos or scan the
pages and email these to me. Page numbers should be clearly indicated.
Email:Anastasia.nikolopoulou1@gmail.com; nikolo10@ucy.ac.cy
2. Write your ID, full name, and telephone number on the first page. Write your
name on each page and number the essays according to the number of the
essay question.

3. Reproduce the text when necessary eg., when you explain what a sentence or
word means include these in quotes; or when you want to emphasize something;
eg., “he said” and “she said” etc. Paraphrasing is ok when you are telling the
story.
4. Develop the essay by taking into consideration the questions according to the order below.
You can also skip the letters and develop the essay without the letters. Or you can use bullet
points and answer the questions. Missing essays or
missing pages will receive failing grade! so make sure that you email me all
relevant pages! Keep a copy on an extra disk or email your exam to yourself in case
something goes wrong and you lose your copy.

5. This is an essay exam, not a paper, so you don’t need to include introduction
and conclusion. Do not summarize the plays in lieu of a response.
Also, you don’t need to follow the order of the points I suggest for
each essay (A, B, C, D, E, F). If the points help you to structure the essay use them
in any order you like; if not, omit them; or combine them,; or address those you
can. Especially important however, to address are points A, C, D, and F (action,
textual analysis, reception/responses of audiences, and social context of audiences)!

6. Failure to send the exam by or before March 22nd at 7.00 pm will lead to
failing the mid term. If you are facing health or other serious issues that will prevent you
from taking the midterm exam you must inform me the soonest.

7. Avoid exchanging notes because they may lead to wrong answers. Plagiarism is considered
a serious issues in the department of English Studies and it can be very easily detected. Avoid
at any cost, to use “student aids” and “student notes” available on the internet because most
of these sites’ essays are written by people who have not read the texts and are “cutting
and pasting” information from other sites so they are plagiarizing other texts
themselves.

ESSAY QUESTION 3 pp. 207-208

HATFIELD. ….Your father, sir, never spoke in doubt, but always looked, spoke his mind, and-

WEsTwooD. And that's what I've come to do. I've come to speak my mind. Times are now
altered!
ALLEN. They are indeed, sir. A poor man has now less wages for more work.
WESTWOOD. The master having less money, resulting from there being less demand for the
commodity manufactured.
ALLEN. Less demand!
WESTWOOD. Hear me! If not less demand, a greater quantity is thrown into the markets at a
cheaper rate. Therefore, to the business I've come about. As things go with the times, so must
men. To compete with my neighbours-that is, if I wish to prosper as they do-in plain words, in
future I have come to the resolution of having my looms propelled by steam.

ALLEN. }
HATFIELD}. By steam!
WILSON}
WESTWOOD. Which will dispense with the necessity of manual
labour, and save me some three thousand a year.
A LL EN. And not want us, who have been all our lives working here?
WESTWOOD. I can't help it. I am sorry for it; but I must do as others do.
ALLEN. What, and turn us out, to beg, starve, steal, or
HATFIELD. Aye; or rot for what he cares.
WESTWOOD. Turn you out are words I don't understand.·
I don't want you, that's all. Surely I can say that? What is here is mine, left me by my father to
do the best with, and that is now my intention. Steam supersedes manual labour. A ton of coals
will do as much work as fifty men, and for less wages than ten will come to, is it not so?
