HYDATID DISEASES:

It is a zoonoses – a group of cestode infections which are important zoonotic diseases of man.

AGENT: Echinococcus . Granulosus

E. Multilocularis

Dogs, cats, cattles

Mode of Transmission

Ingestion of eggs of Echinococcus

Contaminated foods.

INCUBATION PERIOD
Variable from months to years

CLINICAL FEATURES

Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting are commonly seen when hydatids occur in the liver.

If the lung is affected, clinical signs include chronic cough, chest pain and shortness of breath.

Other signs depend on the location of the hydatid cysts and the pressure exerted on the surrounding
tissues.

PREVENTION & CONTROL

Control of slaughter houses , proper meat inspection

Elimination of stray dogs

Health education to butchers , dog owners, animal breeders is the basis of effective prevention
