Medications

The most common antimalarial drugs include:

Chloroquine phosphate. Chloroquine is the preferred treatment for any parasite that is sensitive to the
drug. But in many parts of the world, parasites are resistant to chloroquine, and the drug is no longer an
effective treatment.

Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). ACT is a combination of two or more drugs that work
against the malaria parasite in different ways. This is usually the preferred treatment for chloroquine-
resistant malaria. Examples include artemether-lumefantrine (Coartem) and artesunate-mefloquine.

Other common antimalarial drugs include:

Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone):

Malarone contains a combination of atovaquone and proguanil. Atovaquone and proguanil are
medications used to treat malaria, a disease caused by parasites. Malarone works by interfering with
the growth of parasites in the red blood cells of the human body.

Quinine sulfate (Qualaquin) with doxycycline (Oracea, Vibramycin, others)

This medication(quinine sulfate) is used alone or with other medication to treat malaria caused by
mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body.

Oracea is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of various bacterial infections

Vibramycin Oral (doxycycline) is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat many different bacterial
infections,

Primaquine phosphate:

Primaquine is used alone or with another medication to treat malaria (a serious infection that is spread
by mosquitoes in certain parts of the world and can cause death) and to prevent the disease from
coming back in people that are infected with malaria. Primaquine is in a class of medications called
antimalarials.

PREVENTION OF MALARIA:

Apply mosquito repellent with DEET (diethyltoluamide) to exposed skin. Drape mosquito netting over
beds.

Put screens on windows and doors.

Treat clothing, mosquito nets, tents, sleeping bags and other fabrics with an insect repellent called
permethrin.

Most malaria-carrying mosquitoes bite at night, so insecticide-treated mosquito nets can be a life-savin
