2nd Semester, Academic Year 2021/22

Instructor:

Introducing Speakers in an Academic Setting (5%)

Objective: In Academic conferences, conference organizers will introduce the speaker for the

audience before they give their presentation. Research a professor and then introduce the

speaker using effective speech delivery to an audience.

Directions:

● Research about the Professor and take notes (e.g. search the UM website, Google

Scholar, Academia, etc)

● Prepare a simple visual with the Professor’s picture.

● Provide a welcome and state the Professor’s name, title, field of research, key

achievements, and what they will be presenting (title and brief background) and then

conclude by turning it over to the speaker.

● Practice beforehand without reading, and without notes. You will be graded on audience

engagement which includes strong eye contact, a loud and clear voice, and accompanying

body language.

● Timing: 1-2 minutes

Audience: Conference participants who may or may not know the speaker and welcoming the

speaker.

Memorized scripts or reading will result in a lower score.
