Listening Unit 8: Shopping and Spending

A. Vocabulary

I. Shopping options

1. Match the pictures with the sentences (supermarkets, market, village shops, department stores)

- Ask them to think of other shopping options

+ Offline shopping: Convenience stores, drugstore, home décor store,

+ Online shopping: apps, websites,

- Pairwork: What can you buy and do in each shopping option? Can you list some advantages and
disadvantages of each shopping option and share with your friend.

3. Listen and underline the stressed words

Aim: To predict key words while listening

- Pre-listening:

+ Tell sts that key words deliver main ideas, and therefore often stressed. Allow them some minutes to
read through the sentences quickly and underline the words which contain main ideas in each sentence.

+ Allow them some minutes to share their prediction with friends.

- While-listening:

+ The first listening: Play the recording non-stop and let students do individually. After that, ask sts to
compare their results with their prediction.

+ The second listening: Play and pause after each sentence. Show them the correct answers.

- Post-listening: Ask sts to look at the scripts, ask some sts to speak out lout each sentence so that they
can stress the key words.

II. Collocations

1. Match the verbs with the nouns to form expressions about shopping

2. Listen about shopping habits.


- Allow sts 1 minute to read the questions then explain any new words if necessary.

- Listen and complete the notes.

B. Skills Development

I. Type 1: Note-completion

- Pre-listening task:

+ Circle the words that tell you about the structure of the ideas in a talk.

+ Ask them to think of other signal words (contrasting ideas, adding ideas,…)

+ Read through the note and predict what kind of information you expect to hear.

- While-listening:

+ First listening: individual work

+ Second listening: Listen again and compare with friends. Teacher gives the correct answers.

- Post-listening: Teacher plays the recording, lets students look at the script and asks them to listen and
underline the signal words and stressed words, then practice speaking the scripts with friends.
