The Catcher in the Rye Literary Task

The Catcher in the Rye, novel by J.D. Salinger published in 1951. The novel details two days in
the life of 16-year-old Holden Caulfield after he has been expelled from prep school. Confused and
disillusioned, Holden searches for truth and rails against the “phoniness” of the adult world. The
story takes place sometime in the post-World War II era, either in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Your task is to choose one of the following:

1. Compare life to the when the story takes place to now. The differences and similarities –
the fashion, the music, the ways of communication, etc.
2. Pick a famous person mentioned in the novel and do research about that person.
3. Imagine that Stradlater asked you to do a composition for him instead of Holden, write
something that you think he would enjoy.
