IMPORTANT

To do this task you may want to revise the formats of transactional writing in Unit 3:
Lesson 16 and Unit 4: Lesson 19 in the Language Study Guide. Also refer to the Writing
Study Guide on the Online Learning Portal available in Resources.

INSTRUCTIONS TO FACILITATOR

1. Allow candidates 5–7 minutes to read the topics and make a considered choice. No
writing or highlighting allowed at this stage.
2. Provide enough paper for planning and rough work as well as the final draft.
3. All planning must be handed in as part of the writing process.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Choose ONE of the topics and write a response of 180–200 words (20–25 lines).
2. Pay attention to:
 The audience, register, tone and style
 Choice of words and language structure
 Format
3. Write down the number and heading of the topic you choose, for example,
1. Letter to the Editor.
4. Read through the topics before you make a choice.
5. Plan (for example, a mind map/diagram/flow chart/keywords, etc.), edit and proofread
your work.
6. All planning must be marked as such. Draw a line through it before handing it in.
7. Write neatly and legibly.
8. Use a dark blue ballpoint pen only.
9. NO TYPED WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

1. LETTER TO THE EDITOR/PRESS


Your local businesses are busy rebuilding after the pandemic and a spate of
violence. Your youth club has decided to support them by means of a ‘Buy
Local’ campaign.

Write a letter to the Editor of your local paper to persuade people to stand
together as proud South Africans and support local industry by buying locally
made products. (The campaign can include buying South African-manufactured
products.) (25)

2. INFORMAL LETTER
“They say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but
friendships never go out of style.” (Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City.)

Write a letter to a friend to express your appreciation for his/her sincere friendship
over the years. (25)

3. OBITUARY
Your all-time favourite sports personality has died.
Write an obituary to be published in your club newsletter. (25)

4. MAGAZINE ARTICLE
Many online hobbies and other activities were initiated and developed during the
lockdowns resulting from the pandemic in 2020–2021.

Write an article for a teen magazine in which you describe one or more such
activities and share your enjoyment thereof. (25)

5. DIALOGUE
One of your friends has bought a ticket in a lottery in which the winner gets a free
trip to space. Write the conversation between you and two of your friends in which
you discuss the pros and cons and your expectations of the trip, if your friend has
the winning ticket. (25)

6. SPEECH
You have been invited to address a group of Grade 11 learners at a leadership
camp. You decide to use the following quote as the basis for your speech:

One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind you, it will barely be
visible in the distance.
But the person you become in learning to get over it? That will stay with you forever. And
that is the point of the mountain.” – Brianna Wiest
