Subject: Provision Compressor Damage Protection

With regards to the above subject, we would like recommend the following items and check
point to improve the running condition of the plant and to prevent damage of compressor .
We have encountered compressor damage commonly with the following failures.

 Broken valve plates, pistons, bushing & shaft seal.

We are convinced that these damages occurred is due to returning liquid or impurities in the suction line
which caused the valve plates to break. The compressor suffered overheating due to recirculation of
refrigerant caused by the broken valve plates.

■ Preventive Measures:

1. Compressor crankcase heater

Please make sure that the crankcase heater is functional and must be energized
at least 8 hours before starting up the compressor.
( This is to warm up the heater and separate the Freon gas from the oil )

2. Compressor oil level

Make sure that the oil level of the compressor should be at least 1/3 of the sight glass
when in running condition. Foaming should not be observed.

3. Should keep the suction pressure & discharge pressure during operation of compressor as
follows;
Prov. Ref. Plant R134a R404A R407C
Discharge Pressure 8~12 bar 16~20 bar 16~20 bar
Suction Pressure -0.2~1.0 bar 0.5~1.6 bar 0.4~1.6 bar

It is caused by low discharge pressure or cooling water temperature (normal: 32~36’C) when
stopping main engine or intermediate season.
▶ Regulate the outlet valve of cooling water for keeping discharge pressure.

Pressure switch(KP1 & KP15) should be set according to the HI AIR recommended set point.

The operating pressures, temperatures, Current(Amp), Oil (Freon) level and pressure,
abnormal noise and vibration must be checked and recorded daily;

4. Abnormal temp. & compressor damage by liquid gas
Check the defrosting cycle in all unit cooler (Meat / Fish room & Vegetable room). If the room
temperature increases significantly during normal running condition, there might be excessive
icing in unit cooler. Icing will prevent the refrigerant to evaporate and liquid will be introduce in
the compressor. This phenomenon carries away the oil in compressor and low lubrication will
occur in the compressor. Oil foaming will be observed at this point.

It is important to perform defrosting to ensure no icing in the cooler.

(Defrost time should be set to 20-30 minutes period every 11 hours running time.)

The Expansion valve superheat setting of each room should be adjusted properly to
avoid liquid stroke in compressor during operation. It should be adjusted by trained staff.

■ Service & Maintenance schedule :

1. Clean the compressor suction filter, the suction filter is built into the compressor suction valve.
- First time: 50~300 operating hours
- Next time: Clean when needed

2. Check V-belt tension & alignment

- First time: 100~300 operating hours after the initial start-up.

3. Check and change oil

First time: 200~300 operating hours. / Second time: 5000~7500 / Next time: 10000~15000

4. The plant must be check regularly for leakage. Flanges and joints may loosen during the plant's Initial
operation period. Therefore it should be checked and tightened.
