I. One mark Questions:


Q.1. British historians divided history into how many periods?
Ans –British historians divided Indian history into three periods-
Hindu, Muslim and British.

Q.2. Who ruled Delhi in the 13th century?


Ans- Ghiyasuddin Balban ruled over Delhi from 1266 to 1287
according to the Sanskrit text.

II. Two marks Questions:


Q.1. How were the affairs of the Jati regulated?

Answer-
● The affairs of the Jati we're regulated by assembly of elders
known as Jati Panchayat.
● The Jatis were also required to follow the rules of their village.
So the villages were governed by chieftains.

Q.2. What does the term 'Pan-regional Empire' mean?


Answer –
● The term Pan- regional Empire refers to an empire that
stretches over many diverse regions.
● The Mughal empire and the Chola empire are good examples
of Pan regional empires.

Q.1. Give an account of different names given to Indian sub-


continent.
Answer.
● The term'Hindustan' was first used by Minhaj-i-Siraj, a Persian chronicler,in
the 13th century.
● Amir Khusrau,a notable poet,used the word 'Hind' for the first time in the
14th century in his poems.
● Mughal Emperor Babur used the term 'Hindustan' to describe the
geography,the fauna and the culture of the inhabitants.

IV. Five marks Questions:

Q.1. What major changes were noticed between 750and 1750 AD?
Answer.
● Throughout the period there was a gradual clearing of forests and the
extension of agriculture.These changes in their 'habitat' forcing the
forest-dwellers to migrate into new lands.
● Many others started tilling the land and became peasants.
● Regional markets, chieftains,priests, monasteries and temples began to
influence the society.People were made to pay taxes to the ruler of the
kingdom.
● Significant developments were noticed which created differences among
people and groups.Some possessed more productive lands,many others
kept cattle-
● People were categorised into Jatis or sub-castes based on their occupations
and were ranked according to their background.The status of the same Jati
could vary from area to area.

Q.2. How did Jatis manage the conduct of their member?

Answer –
● In the medieval period as society became more differentiated, people were
grouped into Jatis and sub castes.
● They ranked on the basis of their backgrounds and their occupations.
● Jatis framed their own rules and regulations to manage the conduct
of their members.
● These regulations were enforced by an assembly of elders.
● They were described in some areas as the Jati Panchayat.Jati were
also required to follow the rules of their villages which were
governed by a chieftain.
