Chapter: 11 The Concept of Two Nations State

Questions/Answers
Q1 Why, do you think, was all of the subcontinent not united under
any past native ruler or government?
ANS; It was a vast territory with a diverse population so a single ruler
could not govern it as the people felt they were ruled by a person
different from them e.g: his religion was different from theirs
communication was through messengers and horses which caused that
added to the problems for ruler. As the population grew it became
difficult for a ruler to fulfill the needs of the people which often led to
rebellions among the rulers of smaller states who all wanted an
independent King and were constantly at war to gain their
independence.
Q2 what role did Sir Sayed and Alama Iqbal play in uplifting the
Muslims of India?
Ans; 1 Sir Sayyad tries to establish Friendly relationships between the
Muslims and the British. He was strangely in favor of education as he
saw it as a key to success. He set up the Anglo-Oriental School in
Aligarh. He suggested that there should be separate states for Hindus
and Muslims.
2 Alama Iqbal showed the direction forward for Muslim states in the
subcontinent. He saw the dangers of a single country in which 80
percent will be non-Muslims and how Hindus will never let go of power.
In the Allahabad statements (1930) he puts forward clearly and in
practical terms, the idea of separate states for Muslims and Hindus
when Britain gained independence. Though close to Iqbal, Mr. Jinnah
adopted the two nations theme 2 years after Alama Iqbal's Death.
Q3 Describe the contributions of Mr. Jinnah and Chaudhry Rehmat Ali
to the Muslim freedom movement.
Ans; MR Jinnah put forward the proposal of a separate Islamic state in a
Muslim league meeting at Lahore in 1940. The British, seeing that he
had great power area the Muslims of the subcontinent had to
ultimately give in and a separate nation e: g Pakistan was born on 14
august, 1947.
2 Chaudhry Rehmat Ali tried to convince the Muslim leaders to
demand an independent state. He proposed the Name ‘Pakistan” and
he formed the Pakistan national movement to support his own ideas.
Q4 Explain what is meant by ideology? What are the main features of
Pakistan’s ideology?
Ans; Ideology is a set of ideas, ideals, and beliefs that a particular group
of people follow. The Pakistan ideology is based on the two nations’
theory and that Pakistan should be guided by the principle of Islamic
law and justice.
Short /Answers
Q1 Why was it so difficult for a single ruler to rule the Indo-Pak
subcontinent?
Ans; It was so vast that in the past, with slow and difficult
communications, it was impossible for a single ruler to govern the
whole of it. Some local rulers had a great deal of freedom some vast
areas paid taxes to the Mughal emperor and then more or less wanted
their own way. Marrathas and Sikhs could never be incorporated into
the Mughal Emperor.
Q2 Were the ‘independent states’ during the British rule truly free?
Give a reason for your answer.
Ans; Though most kept up the pretense that they were free, they would
be unlikely to do anything of which the British did not approve.
Q3 Who were ‘animists’?
Ans; People who worship gods of nature are called animists.
Q4 What was Sir Syyad's belief about Muslim revival?
Ans; Only through education he believes could they recapture the great
glory of their past. He convinced the Muslims that educative was vital
for them, it would help them to get jobs, which in turn helped them
have a respectable social life, and most important they would be able
to understand and overcome much confusion about the British.
Education will enable them to be aware of their rights and duties.
