Movie title: The Social Dilemma

As technology rises, a lot of changes happens not only in the businesses and other industries but also in
the life of individuals. When the pandemic hits the whole world, most of us rely on the power of
technology. The food delivery sectors increase their number of customers every day because of the
community quarantine or also known as “lockdown”. People were prohibited from going outside and
having mass gatherings. Online platforms such as Zoom, Google meet, and other video meeting
platforms were highly used to communicate with each other. The said applications were also used by
the educational institutions to provide quality learning to their students.

When I watched the said film, my mind was open not only to the advantages and how the technology
evolved but also to the disadvantages of it in the lives of the people in the whole world. The
documentary's plot revolves around a high schooler named Ben (played by Skyler Gisondo of "Santa
Clarita Diet" fame). As the experts explain the dangers of social media and its extreme addictiveness, we
see Ben fall deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole of propaganda, fake news, and clickbait — all
because his ex-girlfriend is seeing someone else. His life gradually unravels — he stops going to sports
practice, he ignores his friends and family, and he becomes increasingly depressed — until he finds
himself at a protest rally on the wrong side of an issue. It also demonstrates how negative reinforcement
is harming his younger sister's self-esteem and self-image after someone comments negatively on one of
her selfies. The most terrifying aspect of the documentary is that it confirms nearly every fear and
apprehension I've had about social media for the past years. Because of my toxic and malevolent nature,
I've taken numerous "breaks" from sites like Twitter and Instagram, and I've completely left Facebook.
Turns out, I wasn't the only one who noticed it — it's a discernible trend in which outside influences
have hijacked social media as perfectly legal ways to push their influence based solely on how you
browse and what you click on. One of the valuable people of one of the biggest online platforms said
that “There were no products sold on the platform, the products are the people who are engaging with
these platforms”. It is so alarming for us that the generation nowadays is spending their time on social
media.
