TYPE GT-564-B GENERATOR

Refer to Fig. 1-1 and 2-1 .

1 . Remove amplidyne exciter and auxiliary genera-

tor from main generator . Loosen hinge bolts,
then loosen turnbuckle until the belts can be re-
moved from pulley ; remove turnbuckle and hinge
bolts, permitting the exciter or generator to be
lifted off .
2 . Takeout clamping-plate bolts and remove clamp-
ing plate and locking plate .

LUBRICATION

Commutator end of armature is supported on a

cylindrical roller bearing ; fan end is supported by main
engine bearing through a coupling .

The roller bearing is oil lubricated by splash from

the gear box which has a capacity of five pints of engine
lubricating oil (initial filling) . Maintain oil level between
'ULL, and ADD marks on the bayonet gage, when mea
sured with threads disengaged and engine shut down .
See Fig. 14 - 1 .

REMOVAL OF ARMATURE FROM FRAME

Refer to Fig. 15-1 .

Remove amplidyne exciter and auxiliary genera-

tors (or power take-off) from gear box . Take up
weight of auxiliary by hoist, remove capscrews
from gear box and swing auxiliary out to disengage
the pinion from driving gear.

Remove gear box from generator . Note that cap-

screws inside gear box are locked with wire
through the heads ; cut this wire and remove cap-
screws . Then slide gear box out horizontally to
disengage the idler gear from generator gear .

Install puller, Cat. 6746427G4, and pull driving

gear from end of traction-generator shaft . See
Fig. 5-1 .

Cut locking wires, take out capscrews and re-

move retaining ring which secures outer race of
bearing. Install armature-lifting tool, Cat .
6746427G6 and securely bolt it to framehead and
end of shaft . Insert wedges between poles and
armature to prevent bearing misalignment.

5 . Remove fan from coupling end of armature .

Page 132 American Locomotive TP-501 TP-501 American Locomotive Page 133
Traction Generator General Electric 2-51 2-51 General Electric Traction Gen.

6 . Turn generator so that armature shaft is in a

40
vertical position, as follows : Lift generator by
a single hook in the lifting bail on frame over the
commutator until lowest point of frame is eight
to 10 inches above the floor . Then place an eight-
inch block under rabbet fit of frame and slowly
lower the generator as it turns to a vertical 1 0
position . Place a steady and level support under
coupling face, and block up under frame. .

7 . Remove armature lifting fixture from end of

shaft and framehead .

8. Remove frame covers, lift brushes off commuta-

tor and wrap heavy paper around commutator for
protection during handling .

9. Assemble special lifting fixture over end of

shaft (see Fig. 18-1) and bolt it to end of frame.
~_224~~DIA . -... .
For details of construction of fixture, see Fig.
16-1 .

10. Assemble a pilot sleeve over end of shaft, rest

ing against inner bearing race. See Fig. 17-1
for details of sleeve .

11 . Lift coiled frame vertically from armature.

Pilot sleeve guides bearing assembly during re-
moval, preventing damage to commutator and
brush holders. Fig . 16-1 Lifting device for assembling coiled frame
over armature
12 . Lift pilot sleeve off shaft and turn armature to a
horizontal position . Install bearing puller, Cat .
6746427G2 and pull inner race of bearing from
armature shaft . See Fig. 5-1 .

13 . Place frame assembly on floor and remove the

special lifting fixture, used for handling . Install
bearing puller, Cat. 6746427G7 and pull outer
bearing race with rollers from frame fit . Bear-
ing retaining ring has been removed in item 4
above.

00 REMOVAL OF FIELD COILS

When field coils are removed from frame, keep

"each pole, coil and accompanying shims together . Upon
reassembly, replace them in their original position .

Defective coils can be removed without removing

" *the armature by sliding them out at fan end as follows :
$.
0
w 1 . Block up armature by inserting 1/8-inch shims
44 between an exciting pole and armature core. In-
sert these from commutator end .

2. Remove fan from coupling end of armature.

3 . Disconnect leads from defective coil and remove

pole-piece bolts.

4 . Slide pole-piece and coil assembly out horizon-

tally through fan end of frame .

00
REMOVAL OF FIELD COIL IN LOCOMOTIVE

Remove frame covers to gain access to coil.

00 2 . Disconnect sufficient number of leads to permit

removal of coil .

00
3. Place heavy paper or pressboard over armature
and commutator to prevent damage while coil is
being removed .

00 4. Remove pole-piece bolts and slide coil out of

frame through opening in framehead . Be care-
ful to avoid damage to brush holders or commu-

00
tator .

ASSEMBLY OF FIELD COILS IN FRAME

1 . Thoroughly clean coil terminals and contact sur-

face of pole piece where it fits against frame.

2. Assemble pole and coil together and install in

frame with original shims under the pole . Al-
ways use new lock washers under bolt heads
when installing a coil .

3 . If coil has been reconditioned, or if a new coil

is being installed, assemble it hot . Assemble
all coils and pole pieces into frame and make
connections in accordance with Connection Dia-
gram . Then pass a current of 55 amperes
through the field circuitfor about 30 to 35 minutes .
When coils have become hot (about 100 C), tighten
pole-piece bolts . over armature

Individual exciting coils may be heated in an oven assembly
to 100 C and then installed in frame .

4 . Connect coils together according to Connection Fig. 18-1 Method of assembly and removal of coiled

make connections tight . Exciting coils are OPEN
and CLOSED type as indicated ; care must be
taken to assemble them alternately in 'correct
position .

after running in service, and all parts are thoroughly 0
clean, measure insulation resistance with a megohm U 0

one megohm at room temperature, apply following hi-
pot tests to the windings :

Apply 2000 volts, a-c, to generator armature,

commutating field and starting field .

Apply 1100 volts, a-c, to generator shunt field .
