My mother is a health worker. And it was 2019 when news appeared with doom
in big bold letters. One by one, countries, cities, and homes shut themselves off. It
always feels like death is lingering at our door. It’s easier to feel sympathetic in the
comfort of your home. It’s another thing when chaos is brewing inside your very own.
Her body’s getting heavy, and there’s a certain itchiness in her throat, like vines slowly
growing around. I can’t help but bring darkness in my own mind as well.
We are taught that in the beginning, the universe was engulfed in a sea of
darkness. It is no different in this pandemic. We are prisoners to the endless spiral of
the abyss. But then, just as God had commanded, “Let there be light”— light
appeared.
Faith is the seed that blooms into our tree of hope. In these times, we must
remember FAITH. F is for family. God is in each and every one of us, and he shows
himself in his creations, your family, friends, and pets. Surround yourself with the
people you love. When my mother succumbed to the pain, we held each other in silent
prayer. Let yourselves be a pillar of support. A is for acceptance. Accept your own
feelings lest it’ll lead to overload. Channel your emotions to create; it could be food,
music, or art.
I is for invigorate. Take care of yourself. It’s okay not to be okay. Even if it’s
showering, that’s still your progress! Your spiritual needs will be replenished by Him.
Do a little bit of reflection every day. Look in the mirror and say what you’re grateful
for. T is for trust. Trust in Him and His plans. H is for hope. Hope and Trust are the
faith that God does have great plans for us. When I was consumed by darkness, I light
up a candle, a reminder to pray and to hope.
My father used to tell me we are like tea cups. If we are full, then we will be
overwhelmed and eventually, breakdown. If we are full of negativity, how can positivity
enter us? We must let go and empty ourselves first. We must put ourselves to God.
When we do that, God is free to pour his presence on us and grant us serenity, peace,
and light. From the beginning until the end, God tells unto ourselves, “let there be
light.”
