FINITE ELEMENT METHOD OF STRUCTURE ANALYSIS

ASSIGNMENT 6

Ques on 1. Assemble Jacobian matrix and strain displacement matrix corresponding to the
Gauss point (0.57735, 0.57735) for the element shown in figure. Then indicate how do you
proceed to assemble element s ffness matrix.

Ques on 2. Determine the Cartesian coordinate of the point P (ξ=0.5, η =0.6) shown in Fig.

Ques on 3. In the element shown in Fig. P is the point (6, 5). On this point the load
components in x and y direc ons are 8 kN and 12 kN respec vely. Determine its nodal
equivalent forces.
Ques on 4. The quadrilateral element shown in Fig. is 20 mm thick and is subjected to
surface forces Tx and Ty. Determine expressions for its equivalent nodal forces. If Tx =
10N/mm2 and Ty = 15 N/mm2, determine the numerical values of the nodal forces.

Ques on 5. For the isoparametric quadrilateral elements shown in Fig. determine,

(a) Cartesian coordinates of the point P which has local coordinates
ξ = 0.57735 and η = 0.57735.
(b) Local coordinates of the point Q which has Cartesian coordinates (7, 4).

Ques on 6. For the element shown in Fig., assemble Jacobian matrix and strain
displacement matrix for the Gaussian point (0.57735, 0.57735).
Ques on 7. Analyse the beam shown in Fig. by finite element method and determine the
end reac ons. Also determine the deflec ons at mid spans given E = 2 × 10^5 N/mm2 and I
= 5 × 10^6 mm4.

Ques on 8. A beam of length 10 m, fixed at one end and supported by a roller at the other
end carries a 20 kN concentrated load at the centre of the span. By taking the modulus of
elas city of material as 200 GPa and moment of iner a as 24 × 10^–6 m4, determine:
1. Deflec on under load
2. Shear force and bending moment at mid span
3. Reac ons at supports.
Ques on 9. Assemble element s ffness matrices for the rigid frame shown in the Fig. Explain
how do you proceed further to solve the problem. Take, E = 200 GN/m2, I= 40 × 10^–6 m4, A
= 4 × 10^–3 m2.

Ques on 10. Analyse the beam shown in Fig. using FEM technique. Determine the rota ons
at the supports. Given E = 200GPa and I = 4 × 10^6 mm4.
