ASSIGNMENT 5

QUESTION 1. Determine nodal displacement, element stresses and support reactions of the
following:-

Part1: Given data: A1=250mm2, A2=400mm2, E=200GPa, P=30KN

Part 2: Given data: A1=12cm2, A2=4cm2, L1=L2=.5m, E1=120GPa, E2=90GPa

Part 3: Given data: E=2*10^5 N/mm2, thickness=25mm, density=.82*10^-4 N/mm3, P=100N

Part 4:Given data: E=20*10^3N/mm2, P=60*10^3N, A=250mm2

Question2. For the three bar truss shown determine nodal displacement and stresses in each member.
Find the support reactions also. Take E=200GPa.

Question 3: If the support B of truss shown in Fig. above yields by 0.1 mm, determine the member
forces due to applied load and yielding of the support.

Question 4: Figure shows an intermediate pin connected plane stress with cross section area of
diagonal member equal to 2000mm2 and all other members with cross section area of 1000mm2. If
E=200KN/mm2.

i. Assemble global stiffness matrix

ii. Determine load vector if temperature of member 1-3 increases by 25 degree Celsius. Given
α=12*10^-6/C
iii. Determine load vector if member 1-3 is longer by .2mm
iv. Introduce Boundary Conditions
Question 5. Obtain the forces in the plane truss shown in the figure and determine the support
reaction also.Use finite element method. Take E=200GPa and A=2000mm2.

Question 6. Determine the forces in the members of the truss shown in figure Take E = 200GPa, A =
2000 mm2 .
