Language Learning Applications on Grade 11 Senior High School Students at
National Teachers College
1. Introduction
Online distance learning implementation across schools, colleges,
and universities became mandatory in various countries to avoid a prolonged
mass infection. As a result, the education sector inculcates and utilizes
technology to ensure learning continuity amidst COVID19. The uses of
mobile applications became rampant in the academe to study and access
learning materials and learn English as a Second Language. The rise of
English language learning applications makes the language learning process
all-inclusive, interactive, and productive. It enables the learners to enhance
their macro-skills while collaborating with their colleagues using English for
communicative purposes (Azli, Shah, & Mohamad, 2018).
Identifying the effectiveness of English language learning applications on
Grade 11 Senior High School Students of the National Teachers College will
determine its efficiency in Second Language Acquisition of the English
language. Even though short descriptions of English language
learning applications are provided, the overview of its distinct characteristics
and salient features will show how it affects the efficiency of the application
and the effectiveness of the application in the language learning process.
Ideally, the English language learning applications should cater to all the needs
of language learners and provide a conducive and interactive learning
environment free from application bugs and inappropriate technicalities (Chen,
2016). Thus, the research proposal will provide a detailed analysis of
the efficiency of English Language Learning Applications and
their effectiveness in language learning.
2. Problem Statement
Developing a language learning app that is efficient and effective, is vital
for the reason that it would determine the fluency and knowledge of a learner,
when it comes to acquiring a language, though this kind of technology has its
shares of issues. An example of this being not all apps are the same when it
comes to teaching. According to a taxonomy done by (Aguilar, 2017).
they grouped the language learning apps into three groups, apps that is truly
designed for Language learning, apps for developing different areas of
language and the last one not truly an app designed for it but could help. This
study aims to know how effective English Language Applications are,
for a specific grade level of the researchers' institution, which in this case are
Grade 11 students of National Teachers College. That is why this study aims to
answer the following research questions:

1. What are the variables that could affect the effectiveness of English
Language Learning Applications?

2. What are the differences between traditional learning of the English language
and learning English using a Language Learning Application?

3. What are the positive and negative effects of using English language learning
applications?

3. Objectives
This research is centered on English language learning applications.
The aim is to expand the knowledge base; knowledge which may be
used for theory building or practical data gathering
in determining the effectiveness of English language learning applications.
The process of this research opens up new opportunities for learning and growth.
The propositions derived on the basis of observations and data collection will
determine the polarity of the traditional English language learning and
application-based English language learning. The following are the main
objectives of the study:

1. To identify any variables that affects the effectiveness of English language


learning applications.
2. To determine the differences between traditional English language
learning process and application-based English language learning
process.
3. To analyze the possible downsides and benefits of using English language
learning applications.
4. To propose recommendations on utilizing effective and viable English
language learning applications to Grade 11 students of National Teachers
College in language learning.

The data gathering is limited to the Grade 11 students of the National Teachers
College, however, the results of this study will be beneficial to succeeding
researchers, not limited to teachers and students of the National Teachers
College.
4. Preliminary Literature Review
The preliminary literature review shows that the previous studies are
primarily focused on examining the impact and positive benefits of
utilizing various applications as a tool in aiding students in learning English
as their second language. The studies revealed that language learning
applications are somewhat effective for students when it comes to English
acquisition as their second language. In terms of analyzing the effectiveness
of language learning applications, various approaches have been made along
the lines of mixed-method approach, quantitative approach,
descriptive method, and app evaluation rubric. In order to make learning
English more effective using language learning applications, a few
recommendations have been suggested. For instance, the better use of
technology in schools should be implemented, traditional methods of teaching
should be enhanced, teachers must be flexible enough to use Learning
Language Applications in teaching English, feedback should be considered to
improve the effectiveness of applications, and mobile assisted language
learning should be applied with proper training and knowledge to the teachers.
What is missing from the previous studies is the specification of the grade level of
respondents and the use of a specific approach. The studies concluded that
language learning applications had a good impact on students’ learning
English as their second language. Thus, the studies are essential and useful to our
study because they will serve as an overview in conducting our research on the
effectiveness of language learning applications.
5. Methodology
The researchers decided to undergo a Quantitative Method as a part of
the whole study. To begin with, the primary research methods for the study are
literature review, interviews, and surveying the Grade 11 Senior High School
students. Next, to follow up on the first stage, the researchers will have a
backbone of the latest literary reviews that fit in with the study entitled,
“Efficiency of Apps: A Quantitative Research on the Effectiveness of English
Language Learning Applications on Grade 11 Senior High School Students at
National Teachers College.” and identifying the students’ perception and
experiences through conducting a surveys in Likert Scale in a systematic
method. Finally, once the conducted surveys were gathered, they will be done
statistically through computations. The results will be tallied together with its
findings based on the rankings of the scale. This study will be conducted through
