Cancer Activity Glynn Aumiller

Patient Education Summary 4/22/22

This patient was a pleasant 69 year old man who was accompanied by his adult son. The
patient had recently undergone treatment for transitional cell bladder cancer in fall of 2021. I
spoke to him shortly after an unrelated cholecystectomy on 4/22/22 but the topic of cancer-
related diet was a main concern for him and his son as he wanted to ensure he does not
lose any fat or muscle mass (the NFPE I performed during the visit showed some moderate
orbital fat loss) and wanted to maintain his weight despite his ongoing decreased appetite.

I reviewed a high-calorie, high-protein and low-fat diet and provided an Academy of Nutrition
and Dietetics handout on Low-Fat diet for him to take home. I explained several types of
lean proteins he may enjoy such as eggs, nuts, nut butters, chicken, fish, low-fat dairy etc.
We discussed the trial period of lower-fat choices to ensure he can tolerate them post
gallbladder surgery. I encouraged him to try eating smaller, frequent meals throughout the
day and he was open to trying to eat snacks between his 3 meals/day. He experienced
ongoing nausea and vomiting often in recent months related to his treatments that seem to
have created an aversion to foods he ate at the time. I gave some suggestions that aligned
with his current preferences such as tuna salad on toast or with crackers and endorsed his
son’s suggestions to him to re-try some foods he worries he no longer has a taste for post-
chemo like oatmeal, salad, bananas, and granola bars.

After discussing meal and snack ideas with them both I encouraged them to use the RD
contact information on the patient’s nutrition education handout if they had any further
questions or concerns.
