INTRODUCTION

This research investigates the use of foul language sign, which becomes one

of the trends in informal language styles and is widely used by people worldwide.

In the recent study, most of harsh languages are commonly found in the teenagers’

daily speeches that do not appear on the public surface. Furthermore, a language is

needed for expressing ideas, emotion, experiences and others. In addition, it helps

people to communicate to each other with different objectives (Jadou & Ghabra,

2021: 472). For instance, offering help, stating agree or disagree, inviting people,

and others. It deals with the interlocutors that propose different life background,

social status, age, education, and gender. Therefore, it affects how they interact to

other people. In the same vein, Syarifuddin & Hasyim (2020: 1) demonstrated that

language can be applied for the substantial communication in various media, such

as film, cartoon, and so on. Nevertheless, many actions in a film provide abusive

discourses in the conversational dialogues. Mas’udah (2022) noted that abusive

languages cannot be separated in a film since it becomes an important platform to

state emotion, feelings, arguments, disappointment, as well as annoyed. Instead of

offensive discourses are familiar in a film, it is unusually discovered in society.

Based on the linguistics view, the research of semantics analysis tends to be

more relevant to conduct in the present study. It relates to gather the syntactic

structures from phrases, clauses, sentences and paragraphs to the level of writing

as a whole into their language-independent meanings. Agung, et. Al (2016) noted

that semantics is the subfield devoted to the study of meaning, as borne on the

syntactic levels of words, phrases, sentences, and even larger units of discourse. A

study by Novriwandinata (2011) emphasized that the semantics analysis can be

investigated to find the distinction between the utterances and the implementation

in the actual practices. It accommodates to observe the semantics features in terms

of the situation, rationale, and content. It also examines the specific linguistic and

cultural contexts, such as semantic features of words in a text, semantic roles of

words in a text and lexical relationship between words in a text. Likewise, Lyons

(1995) underlined that it also relates to individuals understand the speeches based

on nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverb.

Further on, the linguistic components are organized to simplify the meaning

of the communication. Hence, the interlocutors can be easier understanding the

communication messages towards the discourses. In the same vein, Syarifuddin &

Hasyim (2020) explained that semantics is connected to the content and the moral

value during the interaction. The individuals can convey the ideas from their mind

into spoken and written forms, including gestures, eye contact, actions, and others.

How language is organized in order to be meaningful is what is treated at the level

of semantics. An in-depth investigation by Alsayed (2019) confirmed that people

can understand the word meaning, sentence relationship and discourse and context

from comprehending the semantics. In fact, it will enhance their abilities to learn

vocabulary and implement the knowledge in the contextual circumstances.

Moreover, semantics analyses how individuals comprehend the messages in

the communication. It is often used in ordinary language for denoting a problem

of understanding that comes down to word selection or connotation (Prapanca in

Zuhdah & Alfain, 2020: 105). It describes the meaning of words and sentences,

which points to find the information based on the sense and referent.

To be more specific, semantics analysis refers to the research of denotation

that explains the relationship between a marker and a sign, or even a sign with its

reference to reality. Moreover, it produces the meaning either explicitly or even

implicitly. Isnaniah & Agustina (2020) stated that denotation concerns to signify

the information to the reality, including the specific meaning of a sign, pictures,

and others. In addition, it proposes to share the meaning clearly and significantly.

Similarly, Pratiwi et al (2019) argued that denotative meanings apply in many

types of songs. It helps the listeners to interpret the meaning of the lyrics, which

involves the real meaning in a certain language. Additionally, the denotation notes

about the high level convention or agreement that indicates the literal meanings in

the vocabularies. For example, most of people in the world agree that the things

which accepted to sit down are called by chair. So, chair has only a meaning as

something which is used by people to sit down.

In the analysis of texts, attention is paid to words and the way they are used

in the projection of the speaker’s thought; this is otherwise referred to as the

‘semantic features’ of words. The roles and functions these words are used to

perform are the semantic roles they fulfill in the text. While, the way and manner

in which the particular word in the text relates to other words used in the texts in

the projection of meaning is referred to as lexical relation. Deal with the topic that

will be discuss, the researcher thinks that the title of study must connect with the
topic that already selected, so the researcher decided that the purpose of this

research is to describe the denotative meaning found in some phrases and

sentences in a movie entitled Time.

From the explanation above, the researcher concluded that the denotative

meaning of a word is its literal meaning. In simple terms, a denotative meaning is

the real meaning of a word, which can be found in the dictionary. Therefore, the

purpose of this study is to reveal language signs as a means of communication

with the semiotics theory of Roland Barthes which focuses on denotation (true

meaning). In addition, Finegan in Zuhdah & Alfain declare that denotation is the

literal meaning or linguistic meaning of the expression, and connotation is the

contrast of denotation which means about social and affective meaning (2020:

103).
