 Talk show is one of the interesting programs of a
television station which contains many interaction
between one speaker to another one

Edgerly, Gotlieb, and Vraga (2016) addressed that a

INTRODUCTION talkshow is mainly proposed to investigate an updated
problem from several individuals’ perspectives who
correspond to the case

The study of a conversational analysis seems relevant to

conduct in the presence of Mata Najwa talk show program,
especially in turn taking process

Paulus, Warren, and Lester (2018) asserted that a

conversational analysis can be utilized to find out the flow of
interaction in participating individuals in the conversation

Turn-taking was believed as a gainful aspect to engage the

participation in a communication process, decrease misunderstanding,
and abstain from the humiliation Pour and Yazd (2015).
 PREVIOUS RESEARCH
Research 1
- The research was conducted by Lestary et.al (2017)
- It analyzed the interruptions in conversation and
investigated the value of silences between 2 or
more people.
- It indicated that the silences was intended to offer
talk substitution, reject the ideas, and continue the
discussion.
- The interruption was used to add the uncomplete
information and share the similar meaning about a
topic.
- Suggestion: Speakers should avoid the
interruptions because it might rise negative
perspectives from another speaker and reduce the
intensity of interaction.
Research 2
 The research was carried out by Mustikaningtyas
et.al (2019)
 Analyzing the turn-taking between one speaker
and one interlocutor in the talk show about Learn
English with Taylor Swift provided in YouTube
channel
 Using qualitative methodology
 The result : The process of analyzing the talk show
resulted several aspects of turn-taking, such as
mention, yielding the floor, interrupting,
overlapping, holding the floor, taking the floor, and
starting up.
 Recommendation: a talk show program is
recommended to attain the information of turn-
taking from the informant’s response towards the
listed questions
 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Ruark and Miller (2016) stated that a qualitative methodology is beneficial for the
researchers to obtain the data comprehensively and produce an in-depth analysis. Further
on, they are able to gain the detail information by interpreting the data from observations
(Rahman, 2016).

Interruptions
 It happens when the current speaker have not completed
yet the talk.
 There are some reasons of interruptions, such as
clarifying the statement, interesting with the topic, and
so forth.
 Sometimes, one of the speakers utilizes rise intonation

 B. Holding the Floor
 In this strategy, the speaker tended to keep
the turn by utilizing small pause or filler, then
holding back the talks.
 It is familiar to use a temporary pause in the
middle of the conversation

NS : The survey institution in Indonesia carried out a
polling, eeee, asking to the public, what was the result?
JH : We understand about pro and contra between

C. Yielding the Floor
 Yielding the floor concentrates to give the full
opportunity to the interlocutor to take the turn by
responding the statement from the modetaror.
 It might be in the form of greeting, questioning,
appealing, and giving up

NS : It has been presented in Mata Najwa, I wan to
introduce the representative of the political parties who are
coming tonight. There is the General Secretary of NasDem
party, Johnny G. Platte. Good night, Mr Johnny.
J : Good night.
 DISCUSSION

 The process of turn-taking is one of the prominent aspects observed in conversational analysis that is
closely related to human’s life.

 L. Mey (2001), turn-taking can be identified throughout some key features, such as taking the floor,
holding the floor, and yielding the floor.

 Anwair (2016) stated that to initiate the conversation, an individual should give a signal to the listener as
a courtesy. It aims to break the silences into the enjoyable moment. Even, the starting up is applied to
prepare the main ideas that will be delivered.

 Koudenburg, Postmes, and Gordijn (2016) believed that the utilization of starting up can build a social
interaction into a smooth interaction although some pauses occured.
