tips & guidelines for using this iep organizer
Thanks for choosing and using this IEP organizer from A Day in our
Shoes. As an IEP parent and Special Education Advocate, I know how
the amount of paperwork can be overwhelming. That is why I designed
this organizer. The following guidelines are how I intend to use it, but I
also drew it up loosely enough that a parent could switch it up and use
it how it best fits them. Being organized is a great step towards being
a confident advocate for your child and more successful in the IEP
process.

If you are purchasing the PDF version, it was designed to be printed


and put in a 3-hole binder. I also would recommend that you put several
folders to hold documents in the binder, as well as separator tabs.

Remember the pendency or the stay-put clause – your child stays put in current
placement until an agreement is reached. If you do not like the placement being
offered, do not agree to “just try it out”
because that will then become their pendent placement.

• The younger the child, the broader the vision will be.
• Should be child/student focused, with student participating to the
maximum extent possible.
• Should contain action words such as contribute, maximize, participate,
experience, learn, grow, improve, develop, etc.
• There is no minimum or maximum length and articles online will say
anything from 12 words to 50 words. I’d say no more than 1 page.
• I would submit this as part of your parental concerns, and start your
concerns with “This is our vision for life after school... and it includes...”
• Consider all parts of community – home, work, church, recreation,
personal enrichment, etc.
• The first time will be the most amount of work. Then it will be revised
and updated annually

IEP and COVID
Learning
User Guide-Adjust to your needs, these
are just my recommendations.
1. Resources for you, if you have more COVID learning questions.
2. Home vs School Comparison-Take each skill, goal or support, and brainstorm
what is different between school and home.  This will help you ask for more
or different instruction as needed, or what you need to keep track of for
compensatory services. Print as many copies of this page as you need.
3. Not everything can be a priority. You can always add or change later on, but
this gives you an area of focus while you adjust to a new routine.
4. Service Hour Tracking Sheet-Self Explanatory. Write what your child should
be receiving per their IEP, and each week keep track of what they actually
received. A good paper trail is your key to getting comp services!
5. Missed service hours recap-Optional. But there if you want to recap each
month.
6. To-Do List-Just a handy to-do list for parents for IEP specific items.
7. IEP Goal Monitoring blocks-Print one per week. It's for your paper trail, but
you can be brief. Transfer your priorities to blocks and just jot down quick
notes about what actions were taken that day toward that goal.
8. Secondary Priorities-Optional, but in case you have secondary priorities that
you want to track.
9. Optional Progress Monitoring Sheet-For those who wish to monitor via the
goal, rather than via the calendar.
10. Comp Services Worksheet--this is a worksheet to brain dump, recap or
brainstorm when it comes time to ask for comp services (IE school returns to
normal).
11. Note sheet, optional.
