Time: 1-10 minutes

●HELLO! WELCOME ONCE AGAIN TO THE STUDY OF THE BOOK OF ROMANS.

Last week we had chapter (1:1-4). Today is ganna be a little bit longer, chapter (1:5-17). We ganna chop
it down into sections, but first let's read verses (5-17) shall we?

Han una nga semana, atun napag-estoryahan an Kapitulo Uno, Bersikulo uno
ngada kwatro. Yana medjo hilaba an aton babasahon pero aton pag tutunga-on
ngan hinay-hinayun agod maintindihan naton ini hin maupay.
Verse (5) Through Him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that
comes from faith for His name's sake. 6 And You also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong
to Jesus Christ. Verse (7) To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be His holy People: Grace
and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. (8) First, I thank my God through
Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. (9) God, whom I serve
in spirit in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you. (10) in my
prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way be opened for me to come to you.
(11) I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong--(12) that is that
You and I may be encouraged by each other’s faith. (13) I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and
sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in
order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. (14) I am
obligated both to Greeks and non- Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. (15) That is why I am so
eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. (16) For I am not ashamed of the gospel,
because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew and then
to the Gentile. (17) For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed---a righteousness that is by
faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith. “

Basahon na naton an bersikulo singko ngada desi-syete.

Here is how 5 begins, Through Him we received grace and apostleship, first I would like to emphasize is
just kind of a recall from last week, “Through Him” verses 1-4 speaks about Him, and who is that Him?
That’s the Lord Jesus Christ the Messiah, the Son of God in essence He is God, but He is a Son of God
beacause HE is 100% man born of Mary and 100% God born to the Holy Spirit. So that is what makes
Jesus a unique Son of God. He is both man and God and able to pay the penalty of man because only
Jesus is perfect. So, through Him Paul says, what about him? We received, so here at the very start, Paul
already tols tells his audience. Look what I am about to share to you is something that I have not
invented I have not created but simply have received from Him from Jesus. So, what did he received?
First and fir most, we received grace. Now that word “grace” is the first time being used in the book of
Romans, in chapter 1 verse 5 but it is used over 30 times in the whole book. Grace what is grace? We
received grace; grace is the unmerited, you have not worked for it, you, you cannot buy it, its unmerited
favor which God shows guilty sinner. So, in the way the word grace is being used in scriptures, is that
when God gives salvation, when God gives the good news the gospel. It is unmerited favor to show
guilty sinners. Salvation is a gift from God wholly separate from any human effort or achievement. (In
the video there are texts that recommends to read these books with its verses. See 3:24,27; 4:1-5; 5:20-
21; Eph. 2:8.) so let me just clarify, that right from the very top, Paul says that grace is something we
received, you did not worked

Time: 1-10 (2)

for it, you did not but it, it's given to you. So, Paul says through Christ, through Jesus we received the
unmerited favor salvation that I do not have to work for and he says we receive apostleship. Now I
already have described and defined to you apostleship, the sent one in the first video if you have not
seen the first video yet or the second video rather chapter 1:1-4, go ahead and look for that video and
watch that. So, we received grace and apostleship for what? For what purpose? So now that we are
saved, received by grace given by God, we have been called to call, we have been sent to call the
Gentiles. Now the ‘Gentiles” is simply a terminology that, that describe anybody who is not a Jew is a
Gentile. So basically, there are only two types of people in this world the Jews and the Gentiles. So if you
no matter what nationality you have, whether you'd be an American, Filipino, Korean, Japanese does
not matter if you are not a Jew you are a Gentile. So, tt ko all to call the Gentiles for what purpose? This
is beautiful, to the obedience that comes from faith, I really want to emphasize on that, Obedience that
comes from faith; you see true saving faith always produce obedience (in the video its plural
“produces”) and submission to the lordship of Jesus Christ. (See Rom. 16:19,26; 10:9-10; Matt. 7:13-
14,22-27; James 2:17-20), That is why many times we use the terminology my Lord and my Savior. It's
funny how we use those terminology Lord and Saviour but often times we act as if Jesus is only our
Saviour but then we are our lord we do what we want. You see through grace the by product is
obedience that comes from faith. James 2:17-20 makes it very clear, James says “In the same way” what,
faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. So basically, James is trying to say here and
what Paul was saying in the book of Romans that if there is no obedience, if there is no change of life
after saying I have put my faith on Christ that kind of faith if you claim that faith James is saying uhw
rather Paul is saying to the church in Rome if that’s the kind of faith you are having you better ask
yourself again if you truly have received the grace of God, if you truly have been converted and been
born again. "But someone will say, you have faith, I have deeds. then Paul says uh James says I will show
you my faith by my deeds. So, again here is the big emphasis obedience, deeds is the byproduct of true
faith. Faith in Jesus the Messiah who is 100%-man 100% God who died for your sin and mine and that if
you have put your faith in Him, deeds good deeds and obedience should must follow. when he says (19)
as an illustration even the demons believe and shudder. Huwa what James was traying to say here, look
if you just say you believe there's no difference! Even the devil believes demons believe that Jesus is
God so it doesn’t make any difference. He calls people who simply have faith but no actions no deeds no
obedience “foolish people”. Verse 20 you foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds
is useless? So even if we call ourselves Christians even if we’s call ourselves followers of Jesus, disciple of
Jesus if there is no evidence of obedience no evidence of change of life change of lifestyle change of
lordship that kind of faith is dead. The obedience that comes from faith for His name’s sake. Verse 6 And
you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. So now he turns and tells
the church in Rome which is maijority(majority) composed of Gentile people although it’s a mixed group
but the maijority are Gentiles because it is in Rome. Uh paul is saying

Time:10-20 minutes

●But you are among those Gentiles who is evident that you belong to Christ by your obedience which he
will tell after in verse 6 let me continue in verse uh in the next section. in verses in the one we took is
verse 5 to 7 next section is verses 8 to 10. where Paul tells them the evidence of that obedience that
made them call the Gentiles belonging to Jesus Christ. he says verse 8 “First” let me he has other things
to talk about to discuss but first thing I want to tell you church. i thank my God through Jesus Christ for
all of you,. you see Paul had this attitude of enjoying the conversion of people who are unsaved who
don't know Jesus and turn around and give their life to Jesus Christ which is evident by their obedience
to Christ. and he says here's the proof, because here is the reason why, here is the reason why i thank
my God for you, you Gentiles who have turned around and given your lives to Christ. here is why i thank
my God for because your faith, your faith now it's an individual thing, your faith, now what about it? is
being reported all over the world. That is evidence this Gentiles from Rome have dramatically change it
is evident in their lifestyle. from worshiping other gods now they worship the true God, from living a
lifestyle of adultery of of forniciation and now they are totally committed to obedience to Christ,
evidence and that is being reported all over the world. but the obvious question is what about your
testimony and mine? Do other people talk about it? that they see the evidence in our life? your faith,
here is what Paul is saying about your faith, the testimony of the church in Rome was so strong that in
A.D. 49 the Emperor Claudius expelled all the jews obviously the Emperor did not know the different
between Jew or Christian and because the Christians have dramatically affected a good amount of
people in Rome, Emperor Claudius expelled all the Jews. your faith being reported all over the world, i
have already talked about that, that it is being talked about all over the world because of the evidence.
verse 9 “God whom i serve in my spirit” now this is very interesting, what does it mean to serve in my
spirit?you know as if i'm not doing anything well oh im serving, im serving God in my spirit. well the
word “serve in my spirit “ in the new testament the greek word there is really the word worship.
worship, i serve in my spirit, i worship. Now if we would go to the that same verse, God whom I serve in
my spirit and replace that with the word worship,” God whom i worship” how? watchout, “God whom i
worship in preaching the gospel of His Son.'' Again just wanna make clear this is just a side note,
sometimes we Christians have kind of made it exclusive to say that worship is about singing, and so
whenever we gather bible study a a small group or even a sunday worship service in the work wersester,
why do we say worship? oh! let's sing, well worship is serving God and in this case paul says I serve God,
I worship God, How?by preaching the gospel of HIs Son. uh again just a side note let us not make it
exclusive that worship means singing. it is possible that you gathered together as a church with no
singing and studying the Word of God that is still worship. so he calls that God whom i worship in
preaching the Gospel of His son is my witness how constantly i remember you. so paul is saying to the
church in Rome although he doesn't know he them yet they have not uh paul have not met them yet in
person yet but because of the uh of their faith which is proven by their actions, paul have heard about
them, hu i remember you< how do remember you?in my prayers at all times, so paul doesn't just
remember and just say, wow it's nice they're good, but actually Paul takes that remembrance the good
thing about them and pray for them. Now what does he pray for them? the next line is very crucial, I
pray that now at last by God’s will that is the key in prayer. prayer is not just a sign to say that good
things will happen to them uh that uh you know they keep on growing, yeah those are good but
ultimately it's

Time:10-20 minutes (2)

about God’s will. What is God’s will? God’s will is the sovereign orchestration of things and events
around you, in this case in Paul’s circumstances. in Matthew, again go read these verses (Matt. 6:10,
Acts 21:11-14, James 4:13-14). matthew 6:10 the, the Lord’s prayer or Jesus was teaching His disciples,
Your kingdom come, Your will be done, That's the kind of prayer we need to ask the Lord, that in it as
much as you want things to happen for our life or for other people in the end in the end we submit and
say but Lord is your will. read Acts 21 and then James 4:13-14 ok. And i pray that now at last by God’s
will, what? this is part of the prayer of Paul, that the way may be opened for me to come to you. So it
says that you know my prayer is to go to you and the intention is that, in the next few verse’s the
intention is to meet you, encourage you and get to know you but only if it is God’s will. Amazing how
Paul can totally submit himself even though he have these great ideas on things to do he still says it is
only according to the will of God that I might go to you. Well that's verses 8-10. In the next section is 11-
13 and here is what we will learn from this 11-13. “I long to see you so that” here is the purpose, why do
i want to go to you? But I want to go to you and that's my prayer only if it's God’s will for me to go to
you. but here is my Purpose, so that i may impart to you some spiritual gift. Now I just want to
elaborate uh, the word spiritual gift. Because sometimes we have all these ideas of what spiritual gift is.
So spiritual gift, the Greek word translated gift is charisma which is a gift of grace, a gift that you do not
deserve, a gift that is simply given to you because God gave it to you. He says spiritual enablement
whose source is God the Spirit of God, that is a spiritual gift. and it can be used uh in several
ways ,ok,that the gift of God, spiritual gift, can be used in several ways, so this is the kind of several
ways, number 1;in chapter 5 Romans chapter 5:1-16 that CHrist Himself is a gift from God, so it's a
spiritual gift. Jesus was given to us not because we deserve Him but because God loves us, and by faith
we received that gift that God has given to us Christ himself. spiritual gift could also be just to general
blessings go check chapter 11 verse 29. that everything that is given to you and i are given by God. And
third, the spiritual uh gift can uh pertain to specific spiritual gift given to specific members in the body of
Christ to minister to the whole church, Romans 12:6-8, 1Pet. 4:10-11. So paul says, i long to come to you
to go to you that i might impart to you spiritual gift, for what purpose?the purpose is the most
important of having or uh he o for having a spiritual gift. it's not something to boast about remember
the problem came in uh umm 1st corinthians where Paul was rebuking them because they thought the
spiritual gift was something about they were special they were receiving such a blessing such a gift but
here is what Paul is saying spiritual gift oh ok i already said that, kay spiritual gift let me go here, the very
purpose and the only purpose for a spiritual gift is to make other

Time:20-30

●Members of the church strong. not necessarily physically strong but spiritually strong that my gift that
God is given to me by God’s favor not because i'm nobody special that i may impart to you to become
stronger in the Lord. then Paul clarifies that means in verse 12, that is that you and i may be mutually
encouraged by each other’s faith. So Paul is trying to tsstss say here, Look, yes i can impart to you umm
my gifting that God has given so that you might be strong and that is as i make you strong you too by
your gift that God hasengi that God has given you might encourage me, a mutual encouragement. So
brothers and sisters again just a reminder that lets say even in a in a small gathering or a sunday service
gathering in as much as the preacher the pastor is preaching to encourage you, your participation, your,
your working in the body of Christ also’s encourages him, its mutual.(verse) 13 “I do not want you to be
unaware brothers and sisters, that i planned to come to you”, so Paul really makes it clear to them i
have nothing gents (against?) to you because i desire to be with you and not only i want to, do i desire
to to go to you, i planned it many times many times to come to you. Then here he says “(but have been
prevented from doing so until now)”. so i've been planning for years for many times i dont know for how
long but it says many times, until now i still plan to go there but it has been prevented. Now Paul does
not tells us exactly why he is prevented? Is it because he, he doesn't have the finances to go there?, uh,
is if physically weak to travel?, uh is he being prevented by uh demons to go there? but what i want to
take note is this, what Paul is saying although i planned there to go many times but have been
prevented from doing so earlier uh in the few verses before he says but God’s will is what is important,
yes i planned to go there, yes there are things have prevented me from going there, but it doesn't
matter because God’s will God’s sovereign plan nothing can stop that, if He doesn't want me to go there
right now because of finances, because of physical health, because of demons, it doesn't matter God has
a plan, i'm just sending you my heart, Paul is saying i have been planning to go there. for what purpose?
in order that i might have a harvest among you, and the “you” there refer’s to just i have had among the
Gentiles. so really first to the Gentiles, he wants to have a harvest he wants to be able to share the
gospel to the people in Rome that i mat i want to go there. remember the church in Rome was not
started by Paul. so Paul is saying you know i i i also want to bap (be) part of the groth (growth) of the
church in Rome. thats 11 to 13 and then we will go to the last section which is verses 14 through 17. 14,
why does he really want to go there?why? because“ i am obligated” now that word “obligated” is a very
strong word. “obligated” according to mr. Webster, the dictionary, means to bin that he is bind or
compelled to do that to to share the gospel compelled to do it. so, obligated, Paul is saying that you
know from uh 1st Corinthians 9:16-17 Paul says that he is umm sent by God to preach the gospel to the
Gentiles. So, that obligation that kind of thinking, Paul is saying I really want to go there because i am
called to share the gospel to fulfill His divine mandate to minister all the Gentiles, (Romans 1:5 and Acts
9:15). Now, who are the Gentiles? Paul breaks it down, both to Greeks and Non-Greeks. Now to better
understand that, the word Greek is not simply is not necessarily referring people from Greece rather
when we uh when Paul refers to Greek in those days this refers to people of many nationalities who
have embraced the Greek language, Greek culture and education. They were the sophisticated the elite
of Paul’s time. Because of their deep interest in Greek these people no matter what nationality they are,
because of their deep interest in Greek philosophy, they were considered “wise” And Paul sometimes
just in generalities call and use his word to describe everyone who is not a jew, Gentiles. so lets go back

Time:20-30(2)

In the verse when Paul says i am obligated to both the Greeks and non Greeks, he is saying basically to
those who think they are they are the elite and for the common people. Who are these? those who
think they are wise and those whom they think are not wise. so basically Paul is saying to everybody i am
obligated to share the gospel both to the wise and none-wise. 15 then he conclude that very reason why
he wanted to go there, that is why; here is the reason, that is why i am so eager to preach the gospel
also to you who are in Rome. Now remember Paul at this point was in Corinth so he’s not in Israel, in
Corinth it was also filled with Gentiles but Paul wanted to go to the heart of the uh Roman Empire,
Rome. That is why I wanted to go there in Rome to have a harvest to preach the gospel to everybody
there to whomever God permits me to speak, that is the heart of Paul. 16, For i am not ashamed of the
gospel, now the word ashamed is kind of weak because it seems like you uh you know ashamed uh i i im
embarrassed uh most of the time we say nu im ashamed to approach that person to share the gospel,
i'm embarrassed so approach that person, what will they think of me? err really the word ashamed is
way more than that. “i am not ashamed” Paul had been, we have to understand it k wewhen Paul says i
am not ashamed, the background of Paul, Paul had been imprisoned in Philippi in acts 10 (or 16:23-24)
chased out of Thessalonica (Acts 17:10), smuggled out of Berea (Acts 17:14), Laughed at Athens (Acts
17:32), regarded as a fool in Corinth (1st Corinth 1:18-23), and stoned in Galatia (Acts 14:19). So really
when Paul was saying I am not ashamed, th eheieie e, I think the better word is I am not afraid to share
the gospel, I am bold in sharing the gospel, i wanna go there to have a harvest. why?why is he so
enthusiastic to go to Rome to share the to the Gentiles?why? because it is the power of God. Now that
word power is dynamite, you see the English word dynamite comes from the Greek word Dunamis, thats
the word translated to power. All of the message may sound foolish, simple, just put your faith in Jesus,
who is God, Man, Who died for your sin, and it is by grace you cannot you cannot uh attain it in your
own, its not by good works, it is something we have receive (or something we got to receive), its foolish
but it is the dunamis the power of God the gospel which brings salvation to mankind. Only God’s power
only God’s gospel is able to overcome man’s sinful nature and give him new life, amazing, and Paul is
really focusing on this and telling the church in Rome which is majority composed of Gentiles to make
them understand, you are saved by the power of God by the dunamis of God by sending His Son who is
God born of man through the Holy Spirit died for your sin and mine and that if we put our faith totally
believe in Him proven by obedience you will be saved, that's the power of God, that brings salvation,
Salvation k i already i kind of explain that. Salvation is the key word basically means “deliverance” or
“rescue” it rescues man from the ultimate penalty of sin which is Hell eternal separation from God and
eternal punishment. see (rev 20:6) that brings salvation to everyone no to

Time:30-36

everyone who believes so it's exclusive. it's not just i believe in Jesus because that is too broad what do
you believe about Him?okay again, so many religions weather be uh Islam, wether it be umm
mormonism and many other religion they believe in Jesus but its not the same Jesus that Paul have just
explained in the previous verses. Everyone who believes faith consists of three elements and this is very
important so that we will understand that when we say we believe this is true in our life. First mental,
which means we fully understand the gospel, we fully understand who is Jesus why He came, how He
died, why He died, He rose from the dead, mental we know exactly who the Jesus we believe in. second,
Emotional, the bible requires that before we put our faith in Him that we need to repent of our sin, so
embrace the truth with sorrow over sin, it's not something “oh i've done wrong” it's something that we
fully understand and fully uh emotionally understand that we are on our way to Hell because we are
sinners and also understand that the joy that that God gives because of His mercy and grace. Thats that
should affect our emotions and so uh eh when you know when we sing and worship God tha there's
something really knowing why we worship Him. And third, obedience as we already have explained
earlier, obedience is the proof a change of lifestyle for the good is the proof that our faith is genuine.
Genuine faith will always produce authentic obedience as we had earlier in James chapter 2, Then he
ends with first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. What does he mean first to the Jew? well remember that
God chose Israel to be His witness nation read (Ex.19:6)it's not so much because uh you know seca
(seca?I've been replaying the video many times and still this is what the word was pronounced) in a
sense where you know this is Israel and the the rest of the world is secondary, No, it's simply because
God have chosen Israel His means to bring His word and God gave Israel distinct privilege, again read
(Rom 3:2, 9:4-5), just to better understand because this is a very common question that people ask. We
also see that the uh ministry of Jesus was first to Israel he was born as a Jew in bethlehem with Jewish
parents Mary and Joseph born in Bethlehem grew up in nazareth i mean everything is Jewish, and it was
through Israel that salvation was to come to the world just as Paul was writing right now in the in the
church in Rome. The gospel has started in Israel to the je to the Jews then expanded to the rest of the
world, that is simply what it mean “first to the Jew then to the Gentile”, not because they are second uh
as far as God’s love is concern no it just means that God gave His love to the world thought the Jew first.
For in the gospel the righteousness of God verse 17, righteousness of God is not just a righteousness of a
man, the righteousness of God it is better translated the righteousness “from God” remember it's a gift a
its grace given by God so it's a righteousness from God not created by man, from God its a major theme
as i mentioned earlier uh un the righteousness of God or the grace of God is being used 30 times and uh
righteousness is a state or condition of perfectly conforming to God’s holy character. In other words God
gives approval if we receive the righteousness of Godthat comes by faith in Christ, then is revealed now
the word revealed twan (when? again been playing the video many times this is how he pronounced the
word) means that once it was not clear it was hidden but now have been made known. You see in the
Old Testament , the old testament prophets and old testament people were all looking forward to the
coming of the Messiah and so in the New Testament, The Messiah Jesus Christ has been revealed, okay.
Our righteousness has been revealed from God that is from faith from first to last, Now, first to last
Paul’s point is that the righteousness from God the gospel is completely on the basis of faith from
beginning to end, it requires faith to put our to put our faith in Jesus, okay it is by faith, it is also by faith
that we obey,

Time: 30-36(2)

it is by faith that we can look forward to His second coming, everything is by faith, completely on the
basis of faith from beginning to end, Just as it is written: “the righteous will live by faith” which is a
quote from the old testament in habakkuk. That my brother’s and sisters is the uh chapter 1 verses 14-
17, i know it's quite long i know i have said a lot but for your own sake and mine please review the video
watch it a couple of times so that you will be able to absorb uh what paul is trying to convey uh in this
part of scriptures, okay, so that's it for today go and be a blessing.
