Course Objective

 To identify various Renewable Energy Resources.


 To understand the basic principles, applications and importance of Renewable Energy Resources.
 To understand the methods of Power Generation by different Renewable sources of Energy.

Unit Course Outcome

To provide the concept of Non-conventional sources of generating electrical energy with a

focus on MHD and thermoelectric generators.

2 To teach the concept of photovoltaic systems for electrical energy generation and fuel cells.

3 To impart the knowledge of wind energy, geothermal and tidal energy.

UNIT-I

INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY SOURCES: (3)

Renewable & Non-Renewable Energy Sources, Limitations of Non-Renewable energy sources, need and
growth of renewable energy sources, global scenario of energy sources

MAGNETO –HYDRO DYNAMIC (MHD) POWER GENERATION

Principles of ‘MHD’ Power generation, Types of MHD system ,Block diagram of open cycle and closed
cycle MHD system, Voltage & power output of MHD Generators. Advantages of ‘MHD’ systems.

THERMO ELECTRIC GENERATORS:

Thermoelectric effects, Seebeck effects, Peltier effects, Thomson effects, Thermo-electric material,
Principle and working of thermoelectric Generators and its applications.
UNIT-II

SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM & SOLAR ENERGY (6)

Photovoltaic effects, solar Photovoltaic cells, Photovoltaic System for Power generation, Applications.

Various types of solar Energy Collectors, solar-furnace & applications, Scenario of solar energy in India.

FUEL CELLS: (3)

Principle of operation of H2 O2 fuel cell, types of fuel cells. Advantages and Applications.

UNIT-III

WIND ENERGY: (4)

Introduction to wind energy, Characteristics of suitable wind power site, block diagram of Wind energy
system, Advantages and disadvantages of Wind energy system

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY : (4)

Introduction to geothermal energy, geothermal sources, Block diagram of vapour dominated systems,
advantages of geothermal energy.

TIDAL POWER: (4)

Basic principle of tidal power generation, Operation methods of utilization of tidal energy, Advantages
and limitations of tidal power generation
