SOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS. SHOW YOUR COMPLETE SOLUTIONS.

1. For the reaction A → 2R ( assume zero order) taking place in a constant volume vessel,
10% inerts, the pressure rises from 1 atm to 1.4 atm in 5 min. If the reaction taking place in a
constant pressure batch reactor, calculate the fractional change in volume in 10 min if the
feed is at 4 atm and consists of 20% inerts.

K1
A B
2. The first order reversible reaction K2 takes place in a batch reactor. After 8
minutes, conversion of A is 33.3% while the equilibrium conversion is 66.7%. Give the rate
constants for this reaction if CAO = 1.0 M and CBo = 0.

3. The reaction A →2B +C takes place isothermally in a constant pressure experimental

reactor. Starting with a mixture of 75% A and 25% inerts, the volume doubles in 8 minutes.
A. Calculate the degree of conversion achieved.
B. What volume of a backmix reactor can treat 500 cu ft /hr of this feed to obtain the same
conversion as that of the batch reactor?

4. Two feed streams one containing 2.8 moles A/L and the other containing 1.6 moles B/L
are to be introduced in equal volumes into the reactor and 75% conversion of limiting
component is desired. What should be the flow rate of each stream? The liquid-phase
reaction is A + B R + S ( k1= 7L/mole-min and k2 = 2 L/mole min) and this is to take
k2
place in a 120 L steady state backmix reactor.

5. The following data were taken for a liquid-phase reaction in a continuous flow stirred
tank reactor having a volume of 2 ft3. The initial concentration of the reactant A is 0.20
lbmoles/ft3 and all runs are at the same temperature.
lbmoles A converted per hour Flow rate, ft3/hr
0.0450 0.265
0.1250 0.835
