2 The man’s office has dusty, old furniture, dirty windows, a broken blind and the waste bin is full of plastic coffee
cups. The man is unshaven. His suit and hair are untidy. His name is Mr Samuel and he thinks he’s the best
private detective in Los Angeles.

The woman doesn’t like the dusty office. She found Mr Samuel’s name and address in the telephone book and
she wants a good, cheap private detective.

B While Reading

3 a Sandy Bonner

b Dick Gates

c Lou Weaver

d Herman

4 a Slim isn’t thin but fat. He used to be an L.A. policeman with Lenny Samuel.

b The yellow passes are for training days and the blue passes are for race days. The blue passes are
only for racetrack officials, owners, trainers, jockeys and the people who take care of the horses.

c There is a TV camera on the fence above the gate so the guard sees everyone who enters and leaves
the racetrack.

d The red 4x4 is near a large stable (number 14) and the man in it is the one Lenny saw Sandy
Bonner hit at the ranch.

e The cupboard in Stable 14 is three metres high and two metres wide. There is nothing in it. It is
empty but there is a noise coming from it.

f Dick Gates is one of the men who hits Lenny, puts a bag over his head, ties him up and kicks him.
Sandy Bonner is afraid of Dick Gates.
